Recruitment Variability Of Atlantic Croaker, Micropogonia Undulatus, With Observations On Environmental Factors, Sumalee Hoskin Oct 2002

Recruitment Variability Of Atlantic Croaker, Micropogonia Undulatus, With Observations On Environmental Factors, Sumalee Hoskin

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

I examined entrance patterns of Atlantic croaker, Micropogonias undulatus by comparing the abundance, length, age and growth rates, of larvae as they entered Oregon and Ocracoke Inlets, NC. These biological factors were then compared against environmental factors to assess the influence the physical environment has on recruitment variability. Entrance abundance into Oregon Inlet was an order of magnitude higher than abundance into Ocracoke Inlet. However, the difference was influenced by three peak events in Oregon Inlet and non-parametric tests found no difference in median abundance between the two inlets. Mean standard length was smaller at Oregon Inlet than Ocracoke Inlet …

The Effect Of A Predator Gradient On Female Oviposition Site Selection And Larval Performance, Josef F. Rieger Oct 2002

The Effect Of A Predator Gradient On Female Oviposition Site Selection And Larval Performance, Josef F. Rieger

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

Patterns of larval amphibian distribution and abundance have historically been ascribed to direct predation. However, adult oviposition site selection is an alternative mechanism that can produce identical patterns and significantly influence community assembly. Although such behavioral habitat selection has been documented in several amphibian species whose larvae lack particular anti-predator defenses, the sensitivity of adult amphibians in detecting predator cues and avoiding these habitats has not yet been determined. If larval survivorship is greatly reduced in sites containing predatory fish, selection to detect and avoid habitats with low fish densities should be strong. I conducted three experiments which, (1) evaluated …

Retracing The Novel: Amatory Fiction And The Novel's Rise, Sarah Elizabeth Alderfer Oct 2002

Retracing The Novel: Amatory Fiction And The Novel's Rise, Sarah Elizabeth Alderfer

English Theses & Dissertations

Arguing against. Ian Watt's The Rise of the Novel and other academically accepted accounts of the history of the novel, this thesis positions amatory fiction at the forefront of novel's traditional genealogy by comparing amatory fiction with the Gothic novel in order to link the two genres outside of realistic fiction such as Pamela. Using Love in Excess by Eliza Haywood and The Monk by Matthew Lewis as representative examples of amatory fiction and Gothicism, respectively, this thesis ultimately establishes a connection between the three genres. It examines the similarities in amatory fiction and Gothicism through their use of …

Snapped Into The Sun, Marissa R. Bailey Oct 2002

Snapped Into The Sun, Marissa R. Bailey

English Theses & Dissertations

This collection of six short stories examines the lives of characters who have been betrayed or abandoned by family, friends, or lovers. These are stories of characters stuck in patterns of behavior who often use fantasy to cope with or skew their reality. However, these stories also demonstrate the triumph of breaking these patterns, of moving on, letting go, and persevering in spite of hurt and disappointment.

Conspiracy Rhetoric In Cyberspace: Jim Condit And The 9/11 Attacks On America, An Analysis Of The Voice And Appeals Used In Condit's Rhetoric, Kreg Allan Kinney

English Theses & Dissertations

This thesis analyzes the voices and appeals used in conspiracy rhetoric which is distributed via the internet. The voices, one measure of the argument's authority, are analyzed and described in depth, with eleven voices identified. These voices and their significance to Condit's text as a whole are discussed. Following the voice analysis, an Aristotelian analysis of the text's appeals to ethos, logos, and pathos is performed to examine the persuasive force of Condit's argument. Finally, the correlation between the voices and the appeals is examined to determine the strength of the correlation between the two constructs and to determine whether …

Yet Another Algorithm For Pitch Tracking (Yaapt), Kavita Kasi Oct 2002

Yet Another Algorithm For Pitch Tracking (Yaapt), Kavita Kasi

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

This thesis presents a pitch detection algorithm that is extremely robust for both high quality and telephone speech. The kernel method for this algorithm is the Normalized Cross Correlation (NCCF) reported by David Talkin [16]. Major innovations include: processing of the original acoustic signal and a nonlinearly processed version of the signal to partially restore very weak F0 components; intelligent peak picking to select multiple F0 candidates and assign merit factors; and, incorporation of highly robust pitch contours obtained from smoothed versions of low frequency portions of spectrograms. Dynamic programming is used to find the ''best" pitch track among all …

Object-Oriented Architecture For Concurrent Processes In A Port Simulation, Reejo Mathew Oct 2002

Object-Oriented Architecture For Concurrent Processes In A Port Simulation, Reejo Mathew

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

An architectural model to represent the resources and infrastructure within a cargo terminal, as well as to support the concurrent but opposite flow of cargo within the terminal, is presented in this thesis. The model supports the configuration of an individual cargo terminal according to its characteristics, as well as the processing involved in the simultaneous flow of cargo in opposite directions through the terminal. This is useful in the analysis of the flow of military cargo and aids the decision-making process to increase the efficiency and throughput of any military operation. This model has been developed with the aim …

Support For Statistical Analysis Of The Configurable Port Simulation (Cports), Saurav Mazumdar Oct 2002

Support For Statistical Analysis Of The Configurable Port Simulation (Cports), Saurav Mazumdar

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The primary objective of this thesis is to provide support for statistical analysis of CPortS: a transportation logistics simulation, which models the movement of military traffic through seaports and the interaction of the traffic with port infrastructure. By any standards, CPortS is a very large, data intensive simulation. It provides capabilities for analyzing many important issues such as port clearance and throughput. CPortS was classically run in single run mode. Only a single replication of the simulation was performed and conclusions were drawn from the results obtained. Users and analysts of CPortS performed multiple runs only to see the effect …

Phase-Sensitive Detection Electronics For Wavelength Modulation Spectroscopy Experiments, Tyrone Pate Oct 2002

Phase-Sensitive Detection Electronics For Wavelength Modulation Spectroscopy Experiments, Tyrone Pate

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Wavelength modulation spectroscopy (WMS) is a non-intrusive detection technique, which enables the measurement of several parameters such as pressure, concentration, and temperature of a species of interest by analyzing the latter's absorption lineshape profile. The method employs a synchronous modulation and detection apparatus to increase the signal to noise ratio and hence the sensitivity of the measurement. Phase-sensitive detection and demodulation of the signal is performed at the modulation frequency and its harmonics. Research at ODU demonstrates that each particular measurement can be performed optimally at an appropriate harmonic of the modulation frequency. The most suitable harmonic depends on many …

Real-Time In Vivo Imaging Of Platelets, Tissue Factor And Fibrin During Arterial Thrombus Formation In The Mouse, Shahrokh Falati, Peter Gross, Glenn Merrill-Skoloff, Barbara C. Furie, Bruce Furie Oct 2002

Real-Time In Vivo Imaging Of Platelets, Tissue Factor And Fibrin During Arterial Thrombus Formation In The Mouse, Shahrokh Falati, Peter Gross, Glenn Merrill-Skoloff, Barbara C. Furie, Bruce Furie

Articles & Chapters

We have used confocal and widefield microscopy to image thrombus formation in real time in the microcirculation of a living mouse. This system provides high-speed, near-simultaneous acquisition of images of multiple fluorescent probes and of a brightfield channel. Vascular injury is induced with a laser focused through the microscope optics. We observed platelet deposition, tissue factor accumulation and fibrin generation after laser-induced endothelial injury in a single developing thrombus. The initiation of blood coagulation in vivo entailed the initial accumulation of tissue factor on the upstream and thrombus–vessel wall interface of the developing thrombus. Subsequently tissue factor was associated with …

The Logic Of Scarcity: Idle Spectrum As A First Amendment Violation, Stuart Minor Benjamin Oct 2002

The Logic Of Scarcity: Idle Spectrum As A First Amendment Violation, Stuart Minor Benjamin

Duke Law Journal

The Supreme Court has distinguished the regulation of radio spectrum from the regulation of printing presses, and applied more lenient scrutiny to the regulation of spectrum, based on its conclusion that the spectrum is unusually scarce. The Court has never confronted an allegation that government actions resulted in unused or underused frequencies, but there is good reason to believe that such government-created idle frequencies exist. Government limits on the number of printing presses almost assuredly would be subject to heightened scrutiny and would not survive such scrutiny. This Article addresses the question whether the scarcity rationale-or any other reasoning-supports distinguishing …

Review Of F. P. Grove In Europe And Canada: Translated Lives By Klaus Martens, Irene Gammel Oct 2002

Review Of F. P. Grove In Europe And Canada: Translated Lives By Klaus Martens, Irene Gammel

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Canada's leading prairie author Frederick Philip Grove (1879-1948) had a predilection for strong and silent heroes: the unforgettable Niels Lindstedt in Settlers of the Marsh (1925), Abe Spalding in Fruits of the Earth (1933), John Elliot in Our Daily Bread (1928). Grove's fictional landscape was a multicultural potpourri of immigrants from Sweden, Iceland, Germany, and Russia with new-world men and women transforming the prairie wilderness into fertile and flourishing settlements. Yet Grove, aka German author and translator Felix Paul Greve, was also a literary con man who led his audience down the garden path in a fictionalized autobiography, In Search …

Review Of Medicine That Walks: Disease, Medicine, And Canadian Plains Native People, 1880-1940 By Maureen K. Lux, R. Wesley Heber Oct 2002

Review Of Medicine That Walks: Disease, Medicine, And Canadian Plains Native People, 1880-1940 By Maureen K. Lux, R. Wesley Heber

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Medicine That Walks recounts the impact of the federal government's Indian policy on the health and well-being of Canadian Plains Indians. The end of the bison as a staple of life, the treaties with the Crown, and the subsequent removal of Indians from the land, followed by settlement replacement-these form the backdrop for a thesis on historical cause and effect. The thesis is that race-based federal policies resulted in social, physical, and spiritual degradation for Indian people. Lux's account unfolds as a clash of cultures in which Indian traditions and practices struggle to survive the relentless onslaught of western domination …

Review Of Rebirth Of The Blackfeet Nation, 1912-1954 By Paul C. Rosier, Darrell Robes Kipp Oct 2002

Review Of Rebirth Of The Blackfeet Nation, 1912-1954 By Paul C. Rosier, Darrell Robes Kipp

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

As a Blackfeet tribal member researching my tribe for over twenty-five years through the medium of its language, I read Paul Rosier's book with trepidation because accurate accounting is not a hallmark of most historical analysis done on the tribe. Too often I detect research flaws based on notions contrary to our oral tradition, and I marvel at the distorted interpretations. Rosier's book is excruciatingly revealing, honest, and important. Not just to me, despite my hardened edge, but for the uninformed reader as well. The chronicle is powerfully laced with pages of stark reality, and wanton subterfuge. One of the …

Review Of The Woman Who Watches Over The World: A Native Memoir By Linda Hogan, Diane Quantic Oct 2002

Review Of The Woman Who Watches Over The World: A Native Memoir By Linda Hogan, Diane Quantic

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Linda Hogan's memoir is centered in stories, beginning with the story of the book's title. In a museum shop Hogan bought a clay woman, "her stomach attached to an orange globe earth," that she had mailed to her home. The figurine arrived with broken legs and, Hogan reports, "she began to fall apart in other ways." Like the clay woman, Hogan has fallen apart in many ways, yet she is also watching over her own world and, by association, the wider world of those who share her heritage, her experiences, or her geography.

Hogan comments, "I sat down to write …

Review Of I Hear The Train: Reflections, Inventions, Refractions By Louis Owens, Lee Schweninger Oct 2002

Review Of I Hear The Train: Reflections, Inventions, Refractions By Louis Owens, Lee Schweninger

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

In I Hear the Train, novelist and scholar Louis Owens combines memoir, fiction, and criticism; stories, he calls them, written in an effort "to make sense of the otherwise uninhabitable world we must, of necessity, inhabit." He makes that sense, in large measure, by writing about himself and the importance of family. The "Reflections" are memoirs in which the author recalls his own struggles with inhabiting the world, recounting adolescence and young-adult experiences and describing having found and spent three days with his brother, a Vietnam vet, whom he had neither seen nor heard from in twenty-five years. After …

Review Of Mavericks: An Incorrigible History Of Alberta By Aritha Van Herk, Donald B. Smith Oct 2002

Review Of Mavericks: An Incorrigible History Of Alberta By Aritha Van Herk, Donald B. Smith

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Aritha van Herk's well-written and fast paced Mavericks provides an excellent introduction to Alberta. Served up without footnotes, Mavericks is not history, at least in the academic sense. What Aritha van Herk, a professor of English at the University of Calgary, provides instead is a fascinating personal view of Alberta's past. It contains valuable insights into how many Albertans view themselves and describes particularly well many Albertans' views about their relationship with the rest of Canada.

The first chapter, "Aggravating, Awful, Awkward, Awesome Alberta," is all about the Albertan attitude. What propels the book, what glues it together, is an …

Review Of A Flowering Of Quilts Edited By Patricia Cox Crews, Joe Cunningham Oct 2002

Review Of A Flowering Of Quilts Edited By Patricia Cox Crews, Joe Cunningham

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

A Flowering of Quilts comes to us from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s International Quilt Study Center, created by Robert and Ardis James, who donated their magnificent collection of quilts to the university. The book is the catalogue of a two-year exhibition at the Center called "Fanciful Flowers: Botany and the American Quilt" focusing on the connection between American women's love of floral designs in quilts and their affinity for botany in the nineteenth century.

The book itself is like a great walled garden of flowers. Before you can get to the gorgeous photographs of the fifty-three quilts, you must scale …

Review Of Teaching Spirits: Understanding Native American Religious Traditions By Joseph Epes Brown With Emily Cousins, Kathleen Danker Oct 2002

Review Of Teaching Spirits: Understanding Native American Religious Traditions By Joseph Epes Brown With Emily Cousins, Kathleen Danker

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

This volume passes on to readers some of the teachings of the late scholar and educator Joseph Epes Brown. In consultation with Brown's wife Elenita Brown and daughter Marina Brown Weatherly, writer and editor Emily Cousins has produced a clear and succinct synthesis of what Brown taught his classes at the University of Montana about Native American concepts of the sacred. She accomplishes this through the complex task of blending some of his class lecture notes, published articles, and conference talks with recollections from his students and quotations from published Native American sources.

Following Brown's example in his lectures, Cousins …
