Several For The Price Of One: Right To Aids Treatment As Link To Other Human Rights, Joanne Csete Oct 2002

Several For The Price Of One: Right To Aids Treatment As Link To Other Human Rights, Joanne Csete

Connecticut Journal of International Law

The struggle against the crisis of HIV/AIDS turned a corner in the last year or two with the emergence of a strong and coherent global movement in favor of access to treatment for all persons with the disease. Inequity of treatment access between rich and poor countries has been a feature of the pandemic since use of antiretroviral (ARV) drugs emerged as a standard response to AIDS in wealthy countries in the mid-1990s. It is only more recently that the combination of an active campaign by non-governmental organizations,' the model of a statesponsored program in Brazil that provides generic ARV …

Copyright Restoration Under § 104a: Rethinking Copyright Law's First Amendment Immunity, John Presper

Connecticut Journal of International Law

A copyright is a property right that exists in an original work of authorship as soon as that work is fixed in a tangible medium of expression.' In addition to arising under American law, this property right is recognized in more than one hundred countries that are signatories of the Berne Convention for the Protection of Literary and Artistic Works ("Berne Convention" or "Berne"),2 the leading forum for international copyright protection.' As world markets have become globalized in recent years, the importance of copyright protection across international borders has increased greatly.4 Major exporters of copyrighted works, such as the United …

Ireland's Secular Revolution: The Waning Influence Of The Catholic Church And The Future Of Ireland's Blasphemy Law, Kathryn A. O'Brien

Connecticut Journal of International Law

This comment explores the prior and existing influence of the Catholic Church over the interpretation of the Irish Constitution. Section II examines the Irish Constitution's religious provisions and looks at methods of judicial constitutional interpretation. Section III delves into the major secular trends that have effected constitutional changes in Ireland over the last few decades, focusing on the decriminalization of homosexuality, the lift of the ban on divorce, and the relaxation of Ireland's abortion prohibition. The comment concludes in Section IV with an overview of the Irish Constitution's blasphemy provision, including its roots in English law, and analyzes the possibility …

Book Review: Sharing Transboundary Resources: International Law And Optimal Resource Use, Bradley C. Karkkainen Oct 2002

Book Review: Sharing Transboundary Resources: International Law And Optimal Resource Use, Bradley C. Karkkainen

Connecticut Journal of International Law

Eyal Benvenisti, the Hersch Lauterpacht Professor of International Law at Hebrew University of Jerusalem, undertakes in SHARING TRANSBOUNDARY RESOURCESl to rethink the vexing challenge of how to manage transboundary freshwater resources. The problem is a compelling one. Although ours is predominantly a "water planet," freshwater comprises a mere 3% of the world's water, and most of that is inconveniently locked up in the polar ice caps.2 The rest is largely groundwater, much of it at inaccessible depths.3 Surface water--typically the most accessible source-accounts for less than one-half of 1% of the world's supply of freshwater.4 Yet even that tiny fraction …

To Waive Or Not To Waive: Immunity And Accountability In U.N. Peacekeeping Operations, Frederick Rawski Oct 2002

To Waive Or Not To Waive: Immunity And Accountability In U.N. Peacekeeping Operations, Frederick Rawski

Connecticut Journal of International Law

Immunity protections are particularly important in peacekeeping operations where the UN is often intervening in an unstable political environment and where normal institutions of law and order are not functioning. With the rapid expansion of UN peacekeeping since the early 1990s, the General Assembly has regularly passed resolutions calling on states to respect the privileges and immunities necessary for the organization to achieve its objectives in difficult field environments.4 Immunity has been invoked by the UN not only to protect its personnel from harassment, but to protect itself from suit for institutional negligence, such as its failure to act while …

Visualisation Of Synchronous Firing In Multi-Dimensional Spike Trains, L Stuart, M Walter, R Borisyuk Oct 2002

Visualisation Of Synchronous Firing In Multi-Dimensional Spike Trains, L Stuart, M Walter, R Borisyuk

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

The gravity transform algorithm is used to study the dependencies in firing of multi-dimensional spike trains. The pros and cons of this algorithm are discussed and the necessity for improved representation of output data is demonstrated. Parallel coordinates are introduced to visualise the results of the gravity transform and principal component analysis (PCA) is used to reduce the quantity of data represented whilst minimising loss of information.

Isolation And Characterization Of Atriplex Hortensis And Sweet Chenopodium Quinoa Starches, K. H. Wright, K. C. Huber, Daniel J. Fairbanks, C. S. Huber

Faculty Publications

Starches from garden orach (Atriplex hortensis) and sweet quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa Willd. "Surumi") seeds were isolated, examined for compositional characteristics, and compared with bitter quinoa (Cheno-podium quinoa Willd.) starch. Garden orach and sweet quinoa seeds were similar in fat and ash contents, while garden orach seeds contained 10% more protein. Starches were isolated from seeds following a 12-hr soak in dilute alkaline solution using a series of grinding, screening, centrifugation, and washing steps. Isolated starches viewed by scanning electron microscopy yielded angular, polygonal granules 2 m in diameter. Starches displayed typical A-type crystalline packing arrangements as determined by X-ray powder …

Bluetooth: An Emerging Technology For Wireless Personal Area Networks, Eric S. Hall, Charles D. Knutson, David K. Vawdrey

Faculty Publications

Look under your desk or behind your computer. See that rat’s nest of wires and cables? Almost every cable or wire that tethers us to our devices (or our devices to one another) is unnecessary. Bluetooth wireless technology promises to reduce the cabling chaos that afflicts us all. Bluetooth is a recently developed technology that uses radio frequency (RF) transceivers to provide point-to-multipoint wireless connectivity within a personal space. Bluetooth was designed for both voice and data communication at low per-unit costs while consuming little power. To achieve the cost and power goals, Bluetooth limits connectivity to a sphere of …
