Adaptive Local Polynomial Whittle Estimation Of Long-Range Dependence, Donald W.K. Andrews, Yixiao Sun
Adaptive Local Polynomial Whittle Estimation Of Long-Range Dependence, Donald W.K. Andrews, Yixiao Sun
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
The local Whittle (or Gaussian semiparametric) estimator of long range dependence, proposed by Künsch (1987) and analyzed by Robinson (1995a), has a relatively slow rate of convergence and a finite sample bias that can be large. In this paper, we generalize the local Whittle estimator to circumvent these problems. Instead of approximating the short-run component of the spectrum, φ(λ), by a constant in a shrinking neighborhood of frequency zero, we approximate its logarithm by a polynomial. This leads to a “local polynomial Whittle” (LPW) estimator. We specify a data-dependent adaptive procedure that adjusts the degree of the polynomial to the …
From Efficient Market Theory To Behavioral Finance, Robert J. Shiller
From Efficient Market Theory To Behavioral Finance, Robert J. Shiller
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
The efficient markets theory reached the height of its dominance in academic circles around the 1970s. Faith in this theory was eroded by a succession of discoveries of anomalies, many in the 1980s, and of evidence of excess volatility of returns. Finance literature in this decade and after suggests a more nuanced view of the value of the efficient markets theory, and, starting in the 1990s, a blossoming of research on behavioral finance. Some important developments in the 1990s and recently include feedback theories, models of the interaction of smart money with ordinary investors, and evidence on obstacles to smart …
One Simple Test Of Samuelson's Dictum For The Stock Market, Jeeman Jung, Robert J. Shiller
One Simple Test Of Samuelson's Dictum For The Stock Market, Jeeman Jung, Robert J. Shiller
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
Samuelson (1998) offered the dictum that the stock market is “micro efficient” but “macro inefficient.” That is, the efficient markets hypothesis works much better for individual stocks than it does for the aggregate stock market. In this paper, we present one simple test, based both on regressions and on a simple scatter diagram that vividly illustrates that there is some truth to Samuelson’s dictum. The data comprise all U.S. firms on the CRSP tape that have survived since 1926.

It has become cliche to say that today's student are moral relativists. With the twin movements of ethics across the curriculum and critical thinking across the curriculum sweeping the Academy, one might think that we are in a good place to start making inroads towards creating careful and willing discussants of contemporary moral issues out of our students. Unfortunately, the reverse is far too often true. Associated with the standard sort of introduction to ethical theory, there is a regularly arising trap that brings with it the worst of all possible results - the alienation of our very best students …

The observation of a small change in spectral slope, or 'knee' in the fluxes of cosmic rays near energies 1015 eV has caused much speculation since its discovery over 40 years ago. The origin of this feature remains unknown. A small workshop to review some modern experimental measurements of this region was held at the Adler Planetarium in Chicago, USA in June 2000. This paper summarizes the results presented at this workshop and the discussion of their interpretation in the context of hadronic models of atmospheric air showers. © 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. Rojas, Jong Hyun Ham, Wen Ling Deng, Jeff J. Doyle, Alan Collmer

Erwinia chrysanthemi is representative of a broad class of bacterial pathogens that are capable of inducing necrosis in plants. The E. chrysanthemi EC16 hecA gene predicts a 3,850-aa member of the Bordetella pertussis filamentous hemagglutinin family of adhesins. A hecA::Tn7 mutant was reduced in virulence on Nicotiana clevelandii seedlings after inoculation without wounding. Epifluorescence and confocal laser-scanning microscopy observations of hecA and wild-type cells expressing the green fluorescent protein revealed that the mutant is reduced in its ability to attach and then form aggregates on leaves and to cause an aggregate-associated killing of epidermal cells. Cell killing also depended on …
Triples Of Arrangements And Local Systems, Daniel C. Cohen
Triples Of Arrangements And Local Systems, Daniel C. Cohen
Faculty Publications
For a triple of complex hyperplane arrangements, there is a well-known long exact sequence relating the cohomology of the complements. We observe that this result extends to certain local coefficient systems, and use this extension to study the characteristic varieties of arrangements. We show that the first characteristic variety may contain components that are translated by characters of any order, thereby answering a question of A. Suciu.

It is well recognized that host-specialized folivores prefer to feed on young in comparison to old leaves. However, the capacity of young leaf feeders to track specific leaf developmental stages has not been clearly demonstrated. Using three insect folivores and two plant species, we show that nitrogen (N) fertilization changes leaf development and that herbivores track these changes in leaf development. Nicotiana tabacum L. and Populus deltoides Bartram were fertilized at two and three rates of N addition, respectively. Plants with high rates of N supply had faster growth, greater leaf area, and faster leaf initiation rates than plants receiving …

Low Birthweight Babies: Socio-Demographic And Obstetric Characteristics Of Adolescent Mothers At Kenyatta National Hospital, Nairobi, A. Wasunna, K. Mohammed
Paediatrics and Child Health, East Africa
Objective: To compare some socio-demographic and obstetric factors between adolescent mothers (aged below 20 years) and older mothers of low birthweight (birthweight <2000gm) babies.
Design: Cross sectional descriptive study.
Setting: The Newborn Unit of the Kenyatta National Hospital.
Results: Sixty nine adolescent mothers and 73 older mothers were studied. Adolescent mothers were more likely to be unmarried (p 0.0001) have less formal education (p
