Performance Evaluation Of The New Connecticut Leading Employment Index Using Lead Profiles And Bvar Models, Anirvan Banerji, Pami Dua, Stephen M. Miller Oct 2002

Performance Evaluation Of The New Connecticut Leading Employment Index Using Lead Profiles And Bvar Models, Anirvan Banerji, Pami Dua, Stephen M. Miller

Economics Working Papers

Dua and Miller (1996) created leading and coincident employment indexes for the state of Connecticut, following Moore's (1981) work at the national level. The performance of the Dua-Miller indexes following the recession of the early 1990s fell short of expectations. This paper performs two tasks. First, it describes the process of revising the Connecticut Coincident and Leading Employment Indexes. Second, it analyzes the statistical properties and performance of the new indexes by comparing the lead profiles of the new and old indexes as well as their out-of-sample forecasting performance, using the Bayesian Vector Autoregressive (BVAR) method. The new indexes show …

Differential Cytoplast Requirement For Embryonic And Somatic Cell Nuclear Transfer In Cattle, Fuliang Du, Li-Ying Sung, X Cindy Tian, Xiangzhong Yang Oct 2002

Differential Cytoplast Requirement For Embryonic And Somatic Cell Nuclear Transfer In Cattle, Fuliang Du, Li-Ying Sung, X Cindy Tian, Xiangzhong Yang

ANSC Articles

Effective activation of a recipient oocyte and its compatibility with the nuclear donor are critical to the successful nuclear reprogramming during nuclear transfer. We designed a series of experiments using various activation methods to determine the optimum activation efficiency of bovine oocytes. We then performed nuclear transfer (NT) of embryonic and somatic cells into cytoplasts presumably at G1/S phase (with prior activation) or at metaphase II (MII, without prior activation). Oocytes at 24 hr of maturation in vitro were activated with various combinations of calcium ionophore A23187 (A187) (5 microM, 5 min), electric pulse (EP), ethanol (7%, 7 min), cycloheximide …

Semantic Web Services And Processes: Semantic Composition And Quality Of Service, Jorge Cardoso, Chistoph Bussler, Amit P. Sheth, Dieter Fensel

Kno.e.sis Publications

Web Services are increasingly being adapted by Enterprises as the new approach to component-based solutions for enterprise applications. They hold potential to transform Web from a collection of information resources to a distributed computing platform. Many enterprise applications, including those supporting e-commerce take a form of processes, which need to be created from individual Web Services and other software components.

Seven Hills Winery Fall 2002 Newsletter, Casey Mcclellan

Seven Hills Winery Documents

In this newsletter (No. 7) from Seven Hills Winery, winemaker Casey McClellan offers an initial assessment of the 2002 vintage, comparing it to the 1999 vintage as a result of the cool, early growing season and a moderately warm late August and September. McClellan goes on to announce a new Spanish varietal to the Seven Hills label, Tempranillo. Further content includes notes on new releases (2000), accolades for Seven Hills wines, an order form for both red and white wines (1999-2001), information about the Holiday Barrel Tasting event in December, and an announcement of the first red table wine from …

Friendship Quality In Youth Disability Sport: Perceptions Of A Best Friend, Jeffrey J. Martin, Kerry Smith Oct 2002

Friendship Quality In Youth Disability Sport: Perceptions Of A Best Friend, Jeffrey J. Martin, Kerry Smith

Kinesiology, Health and Sport Studies

The purpose of the current investigation was to examine friendship quality with a best friend in youth disability sport with an international sample of moderately experienced athletes with disabilities ages 9 to 18 years. Participants were 85 males and 65 females from four countries who competed in track and field and swimming. Data were collected with the Sport Friendship Quality Scale (Weiss & Smith, 1999). An exploratory factor analyses indicated that participants viewed their friendship quality with a best friend in disability sport as having both positive and negative dimensions. The latter focused exclusively on conflict experiences. Females reported stronger …

Fluid Dynamics Of Flapping Aquatic Flight In The Bird Wrasse: Three-Dimensional Unsteady Computations With Fin Deformation, Ravi Ramamurti, William C. Sandberg, Rainald Lӧhner, Jeffrey A. Walker, Mark W. Westneat Oct 2002

Fluid Dynamics Of Flapping Aquatic Flight In The Bird Wrasse: Three-Dimensional Unsteady Computations With Fin Deformation, Ravi Ramamurti, William C. Sandberg, Rainald Lӧhner, Jeffrey A. Walker, Mark W. Westneat

Biology

Many fishes that swim with the paired pectoral fins use fin-stroke parameters that produce thrust force from lift in a mechanism of underwater flight. These locomotor mechanisms are of interest to behavioral biologists, biomechanics researchers and engineers. In the. present study, we performed the first three-dimensional unsteady computations of fish swimming with oscillating and deforming fins. The objective of these computations was to investigate the fluid dynamics of force production associated with the flapping aquatic flight of the bird wrasse Gomphosus varius. For this computational work, we used the geometry of the wrasse and its pectoral fin, and previously measured …
