This thesis describes the development of a particle tracer technique for making short-term, in situ measurements of aquatic bed sediment biodiffusion coefficients. The bioturbation process in the upper sediment layers of streams, lakes, estuaries, and the marine environment moves particles and porewater. When present, organic chemicals, metals, colloids, etc., are transported across these layers and exchanges may occur at the sediment-water interface. Fickian biodiffusion coefficients that characterize such particle movements, Db (cm2/yr), are used for assessing chemical diagenesis rates and contaminant fluxes and are specific to each site. The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of the perceptions of and attitudes toward partner abuse, and various demographic characteristics on the incidence of partner abuse among first generation Korean-Americans. The study employed a correlational explanatory design using a cross-sectional survey technique utilizing a total of 223 Korean immigrant adults currently residing in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. A three-part instrument was used for data colleciton. Part I of the instrument measured the perceptions of and attitudes toward domestic violence among Korean-Americans. Successful algorithmic music composition requires the efficient creation of works that reflect human preferences. In examining this key issue, we make two main contributions in this dissertation: analysis of the computational complexity of algorithmic music composition, and methods to produce music that approximates a commendable human effort. We use species counterpoint as our compositional model, wherein a set of stylistic and grammatical rules governs the search for suitable countermelodies to match a given melody. Our analysis of the complexity of rule-based music composition considers four different types of computational problems: decision, enumeration, number, and optimization. The present research examined the combined effects of violent video games and violent TV programs on third and sixth-grade boys’ thoughts and behavior. In individual sessions, demographic information about the children’s television viewing and video game playing habits was collected. Participants were exposed to one of six following media conditions for 15 minutes; a) watch a violent (wrestling) or a non-violent video segment (basketball), b) play a violent or a non-violent game, or c) watch a violent or non-violent video segment and then play a video game containing the same characters and content. A Tn7-based transposition system carrying a kanamycin resistance gene has been used to disrupt a known virulence gene of Brucella melitensis 16M and Brucella abortus 2308 in-vitro. The suicide plasmid pBAvirB1::kan-29 was created, in part, by cloning the B. abortus virB1 gene into a vector that is not stably maintained in Brucella spp. The cloned virB1 gene was then mutagenized by in-vitro transposition of a Tn7-based transposon. This construct was used in-vivo to insert a disrupted virB1 gene in place of the wild type virB1 found in B. abortus 2308 and B. melitensis 16M by homologous recombination. The resulting virB1 …

Surfactants have been considered for enhanced oil recovery by reduced oil-water interfacial tension. However, these surfactants may enhance oil recovery via wettability alteration as well. This study experimentally determines the influence of surfactant type and concentration on oil recovery, oil-water relative permeabilities and wettability in reservoir rocks. Several coreflood experiments were conducted using Yates reservoir fluids in Berea rocks and two types of surfactants (nonionic and anionic) in varying concentrations. A coreflood simulator was used to calculate oil-water relative permeabilities by history matching recovery and pressure drop measured during the corefloods. The relations between overpressuring, diagenesis, and fluid flow in sedimentary basins are complex and multifaceted. The Matagorda Island 519 field (MI 519), offshore Texas, provides an excellent area for investigating some of these relations. The top of overpressure at MI 519 occurs at a depth of 3.5 to 3.8 km in a Lower Miocene deltaic sequence. On the basis of log-derived lithostratigraphy, the pressure seal does not appear to be lithologic in origin. Geochemical, mineralogical, and cuttings information indicate instead that the precipitation of diagenetic calcite and possibly quartz cements has been the major factor in seal development. The aim of this study was to test short-term and long-term reliability of venous outflow (VO) indices using the venous occlusion plethysmography technique. A secondary purpose was to compare venous measures to age, gender and various anthropometrical measures. The study group consisted of apparently healthy males and females, aged 18 to 80 years. Venous indices were under measures on two occasions (1 week apart), under the conditions of rest and following 5 min of upper arm occlusion. Denitrification potential was determined in surface sediment from Lake Cataouatche, the receiving basin for a future Mississippi River diversion located in the northern portion of the Barataria Basin estuary. Nitrate removal and denitrification was measured in the laboratory using static sediment microcosms flooded with lake water. Dissolved potassium nitrate (KNO3) was added to the microcosms to achieve: 1) an initial nitrate concentration similar to the mean Mississippi River concentration (~1.4 mg NO3-N l-1), and, 2) a high initial nitrate concentration to elicit a denitrification potential (~50 mg NO3-N l-1). Acetyl-CoA carboxylase catalyzes the first step in the synthesis of fatty acids. The Escherichia coli form of the enzyme consists of a biotin carboxylase protein, a biotin carboxyl carrier protein, and a carboxyltransferase protein. This enzyme uses the cofactor biotin as a carboxyl carrier. In order for the carboxylation of biotin to occur, biotin must be deprotonated at its N-1 position. It has been proposed that the active site residues cysteine 230 and lysine 238 act as an acid-base pair to deprotonate biotin. This study examined nonverbal memory in patients with intractable temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) on a figural reproduction task, the Rey-Osterrieth Complex Figure (ROCF). The Boston Qualitative Scoring System (BQSS) was used to examine whether qualitative features of ROCF performance could discriminate between those with right and left TLE. As predicted, seizure groups did not differ on a standard quantitative scoring system for the ROCF. Contrary to prediction, the right TLE group did not perform more poorly on BQSS measures of quality or organization, and they did not have greater difficulty recalling the figure after a delay. Chromated copper arsenate (CCA) treated wood is an economical, durable and aesthetically pleasing residential material used for many exterior application such as decks, fences, playground equipment, utility poles, and others. It has been most widely used in North America since the 1970’s. A large volume of CCA-treated wood is currently coming out of service. Traditional landfilling or incineration is environmentally unacceptable. Recycling CCA-treated wood into composite products is one alternative to ease the disposal problem. This dissertation presents a new numerical model of reactive polymer flow in heterogeneous porous media. A moment representation of the log-normal polymer molecular weight distribution is used to model polymer as a multi-component species. Three leading moments are used to simulate the polymer transport and reaction processes in a two-dimensional porous medium. A new operator splitting technique that allows the moment equations for polymerization to be incorporated into a finite-difference transport model is developed. The trace element content of calcareous foraminifera provides a powerful tool to the study of glacial-interglacial changes in the physical and chemical properties of the ocean. Foraminifera incorporate barium in direct proportion to its concentration in seawater. Using barium as a nutrient proxy, Ba/Ca in benthic Planulina wuellerstorfi is used to reconstruct changes in thermocline ventilation and mid-depth circulation in the North Atlantic during the last glacial and deglacial time. Rivers are concentrated in barium compared to surface seawater. Therefore, barium in planktonic Neogloboquadrina pachyderma is used to identify deglacial meltwater in the Arctic Ocean. This project examines contemporary African American women’s literature and the legacy established by literary foremother, Zora Neale Hurston. The discussion is positioned at the cross-section of three on-going conversations: 1) current discourses on Conjure in African American women’s literature, 2) analyses of Africanisms in black culture, and 3) previous scholarship on recurring topics in African American women’s writing. The purpose of this dissertation is to investigate the nanoscale hardness of gallium arsenide thin films and the elastic-plastic behavior of gallium arsenide under an indenter. These investigations were carried out using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The simulations are based on interatomic potentials that accurately reproduce many properties of bulk GaAs. The MD simulations performed required scalable and efficient algorithms for implementation on large parallel computers. Nanoindentation simulations were performed using an ideal indenter that was held rigid during the simulation. On 25 October 2000, Austria’s first memorial to Jewish victims of the Holocaust was unveiled at the Judenplatz in Vienna. Conceived by Nazi hunter Simon Wiesenthal and designed by British sculptress Rachel Whiteread in the form of a nameless library, a concrete block displays shelves of books with their spines turned to the inside, enclosing an area made inaccessible by a permanently locked door. The outer memorial is designed to represent Jewish culture and learning that were lost forever in the Holocaust, while the empty space within symbolises the many readers of the library who did not live on. We assess the effect on savings behavior of several different 401(k) plan features, including automatic enrollment, automatic cash distributions, employer matching provisions, eligibility requirements, investment options, and financial education. We also present new survey evidence on individual savings adequacy. Many of our conclusions are based on an analysis of micro-level administrative data on the 401(k) savings behavior of employees in several large corporations that implemented changes in their 401(k) plan design. Our analysis identifies a key behavioral principle that should partially guide the design of 401(k) plans: employees often follow the path of least resistance. For better or for worse, …

Component-based software development (CBD) is a potential breakthrough for software engineering. Unified Modeling Language (UML) can potentially facilitate CBD design and modeling. Herein, I will reconsider the works of Martin Heidegger and Emmanuel Levinas with a feminist focus. Through a careful analysis of both the Heideggerian and Levinasian placement of the feminine and of sexual difference, I will suggest alternatives to some traditional readings of these two prolific figures offered by feminists and feminist philosophers. I will argue, in effect, for a Heideggerian model for re-thinking sexual difference.
