Alaskan Native women may be at an increased risk of exposure to persistent organic pollutants (POPs) because they eat a subsistence diet that contains elevated levels of these chemicals. Research suggests that these chemicals may be capable of acting like estrogens, and thus could increase a woman's risk of developing breast cancer. The objectives of this research were to (1) determine overall body burdens of POPs in Alaskan Natives and compare these to results from the Second National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES II); (2) determine if geographical location within Alaska correlates with a woman's body burden of POPS; …

Objectives . The study sought to determine whether report of preventive health counseling and education influenced behavior and pregnancy outcome. Methods . This study involved the use of secondary data conducted prospectively on a group of high-risk, African American, Medicaid-eligible pregnant women served by public clinics in Birmingham, Alabama, between 1994 and 1996. One group of women participated in the Mother and Family Specialty Center program, which offered augmented prenatal care services, and the other group received the usual services offered by the health department clinics. Characteristics And Birth Outcomes: Women Receiving No Prenatal Care In The United States, 1995–1997, Cathy R. Taylor

Although prenatal care is an established mechanism for identifying and managing risk factors impacting pregnancy outcomes, about 70,000 women in the United States receive no prenatal care annually. It was hypothesized that women who receive no care comprise clusters (subgroups) with distinctive sociodemographic characteristics and that differences in birth outcomes exist among the clusters. A population-based, non-experimental, retrospective design, and secondary data were used to identify White, Black, and Hispanic ( n = 126,220) women delivering a live, singleton infant and reporting no prenatal care between 1995 and 1997.
