Multiresolution, Dynamic, And Adaptive Image Quantization Methodology: Automation And Analysis, Leen-Kiat Soh Oct 2002

Multiresolution, Dynamic, And Adaptive Image Quantization Methodology: Automation And Analysis, Leen-Kiat Soh

School of Computing: Faculty Publications

We describe a multiresolution, dynamic, and adaptive image quantization methodology with automation being the goal of our research. To improve the robustness of the approach, we incorporate dynamic local thresholding and multiresolution peak detection. The first strategy extracts bisector values from local regions of the image and builds a histogram based on those values. The second strategy maps the derived histogram into multiple levels of resolution, allowing peaks be scored for their significance and localized. We conduct several experiments to analyze different versions of our quantization methodology and to compare it with the equal probability quantization. We also investigated the …

Long-Lived Oscillons From Asymmetric Bubbles: Existence And Stability, Artur B. Adib, Marcelo Gleiser, Carlos A.S Almeida Oct 2002

Long-Lived Oscillons From Asymmetric Bubbles: Existence And Stability, Artur B. Adib, Marcelo Gleiser, Carlos A.S Almeida

Dartmouth Scholarship

The possibility that extremely long-lived, time-dependent, and localized field configurations (“oscillons”) arise during the collapse of asymmetrical bubbles in (2+1)-dimensional φ4 models is investigated. It is found that oscillons can develop from a large spectrum of elliptically deformed bubbles. Moreover, we provide numerical evidence that such oscillons are (a) circularly symmetric and (b) linearly stable against small arbitrary radial and angular perturbations. The latter is based on a dynamical approach designed to investigate the stability of nonintegrable time-dependent configurations that is capable of probing slowly growing instabilities not seen through the usual “spectral” method.

Rapid Determination Of Serum Melatonin By Esi–Ms–Ms With Direct Sample Injection, Shuming Yang, Xiaohui Zheng, Yan Xu, Xiang Zhou Oct 2002

Rapid Determination Of Serum Melatonin By Esi–Ms–Ms With Direct Sample Injection, Shuming Yang, Xiaohui Zheng, Yan Xu, Xiang Zhou

Chemistry Faculty Publications

This paper describes a rapid, simple and sensitive analytical method for the quantitative determination of melatonin in human serum by ESI–MS–MS with direct serum sample injection and on-line extraction. The method uses N-acetyltryptamine as the internal standard. It has high specificity and sensitivity for serum melatonin analysis. The internal calibration curve shows a wide linear range from 0.500 to 200 ng/ml with a correlation coefficient, R2>0.999. The limit of quantitation is 0.500 ng/ml and the limit of detection is 0.100 ng/ml with 10-μl sample injection. The recoveries of serum melatonin at three levels are approximately 70%. The intra-assay precision …

Bundles Of Fibers Useful For Moving Liquids At High Fluxes And Acquisition/Distribution Structures That Use The Bundles, Bobby Mal Phillips, Jackson Lee Nelson, Shriram Bagrodia Oct 2002

Bundles Of Fibers Useful For Moving Liquids At High Fluxes And Acquisition/Distribution Structures That Use The Bundles, Bobby Mal Phillips, Jackson Lee Nelson, Shriram Bagrodia

Clemson Patents

The ability to transport body liquids in consumer products such as diapers, incontinents and feminine napkins is a key factor in their performance. This invention is designed to provide specific high fluxes (volume of liquid/(time*mass of polymer) of aqueous liquids in designated directions using bundles of new specially designed fibers. The key factors for the bundles are a high specific adhesion for the liquid of interest, a high specific volume of the bundle itself, and alignment of the fibers within the bundle. The invention includes novel liquid acquisition/distribution systems and absorbent products that include a liquid acquisition/distribution system which may …

Origin And Neuronal Function Of In Vivo Nonsynaptic Glutamate, David A. Baker, Zheng-Xiong Xi, Hui Shen, Chad J. Swanson, Peter W. Kalivas Oct 2002

Origin And Neuronal Function Of In Vivo Nonsynaptic Glutamate, David A. Baker, Zheng-Xiong Xi, Hui Shen, Chad J. Swanson, Peter W. Kalivas

MUSC Faculty Journal Articles

Basal extracellular glutamate sampled in vivo is present in micromolar concentrations in the extracellular space outside the synaptic cleft, and neither the origin nor the function of this glutamate is known. This report reveals that blockade of glutamate release from the cystine–glutamate antiporter produced a significant decrease (60%) in extrasynaptic glutamate levels in the rat striatum, whereas blockade of voltage-dependent Na and Ca2 channels produced relatively minimal changes (0– 30%). This indicates that the primary origin of in vivo extrasynaptic glutamate in the striatum arises from nonvesicular glutamate release by the cystine–glutamate antiporter. By measuring [ 35S]cystine uptake, it was …
