The Asymptotic Behavior Of The Integer Solutions Of The Rosenberger Equations, Kensaku Umeda Jan 2002

The Asymptotic Behavior Of The Integer Solutions Of The Rosenberger Equations, Kensaku Umeda

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The Rosenberger equations are equations of the form: ax 2 + by2 + cz 2 = dxyz, where the sets of coefficients ( a, b, c, d) are all integers such that each of a, b, and c divides d, and the equations themselves have infinitely many integer solutions. Rosenberger has shown that there are only six such sets of coefficients, one of which is the Markoff equation, x2 + y2 + z2 = 3xyz. Zagier investigated the asymptotic behavior of the integer solutions of the Markoff equation. In this paper, we apply Zagier's techniques to the Rosenberger equations and …

Faster, simpler, and more cost-effective held screening tools can increase the amount of information available concerning the location, source, and/or concentration of pollutants present in the environment. The Enzyme Inhibition Bioassay 96 (EIB 96) is one such field-screening tool; The EIB 96 is an assay that can detect the presence of organophosphate and carbamate compounds, providing scientists with valuable information to focus their future sampling efforts. The assay is based on the inhibition of the enzyme acetylcholinesterase by organophosphate and carbamate compounds. The organophosphate and carbamate compounds that were used in this project were the pesticides carbaryl, chlorpyrifos, diazinon, dichlorvos, …

Power And Political Process: The Case Of The Ivanpah Airport, Amy Gayle Walker Jan 2002

Power And Political Process: The Case Of The Ivanpah Airport, Amy Gayle Walker

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This thesis examines power and political processes involved in the decision to construct a second commercial airport for Las Vegas, NV and the southern Nevada region. Using interview data and document analysis I argue that the organizational capacity of the state and its relative autonomy enabled state actors to dominate the airport's development process by defining the need and setting the agenda for the project. Additionally, state officials acquired the land for the project by circumventing established mechanisms for public participation and involvement. The findings support a state-centered approach to understanding who wields power and how in political processes. Ultimately, …

The Effectiveness Of Reading Programs For The Intermediate Remedial Student, Hope Ann Walter Jan 2002

The Effectiveness Of Reading Programs For The Intermediate Remedial Student, Hope Ann Walter

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Research on remedial reading programs has a controversial history. Although extensive research has been conducted on pull-out programs, far less research has evaluated remedial reading programs within the regular classroom. This study investigated whether using the basal or a new program, Project STARS, would produce reading gains in intermediate remedial readers. It was hypothesized that Project STARS subjects would show a greater academic gain in three areas. To evaluate this hypothesis, 46 students were assessed in August and December to determine the amount of growth for each student after instruction in either the Project STARS method or the basal text. …

From Equi-Graphical Sets To Graphical Permutations: A Problem Of Degrees In Graphs, Michael Lee Watson Jan 2002

From Equi-Graphical Sets To Graphical Permutations: A Problem Of Degrees In Graphs, Michael Lee Watson

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

A set {a1, a2,.., an} of positive integers with a 1 < a2 < &cdots; < an is said to be equi-graphical if there exists a graph with exactly ai vertices of degree ai for each i with 1 ≤ i ≤ n. It is known that such a set is equi-graphical if and only if i=1nai is even and an≤i=1n-1 ai2 . This concept is now generalized to the following problem: Given a set S of positive integers and a permutation pi on S, determine when there exists a graph containing exactly ai vertices of degree pi(ai) for each i (1 ≤ i ≤ n). If such a graph exists, then pi is called a graphical permutation; In this paper, the graphical permutations on sets of size four are characterized and using a criterion of Fulkerson, Hoffman, and McAndrew, we show that a permutation pi of S = {a1, a2, .. , an}, where 1 ≤ a1 < a2 < &cdots; < an and such that pi(a n) = an, is graphical if and only if i=1naip ai is even and an≤i=1n-1 aipai .

Modeling Image Databases Using Xml Schema, Min Xu Jan 2002

Modeling Image Databases Using Xml Schema, Min Xu

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This thesis presents a model for still images in order to support content-based querying and browsing by hierarchical tree structures and object relational graphs. We use the extensible markup language (XML) schema to illustrate and exemplify the proposed model because of its interoperability and flexibility advantages. Of primary interest is the notion of complex types and referential integrity to fully describe the physical and semantic properties of images. XQuery is used to support query processing. We further show how these complex types of XML schema can be used to overcome the shortcomings of reported image database descriptions in the literature.

The Establishment Of The Oligomeric Purity And Molecular Structure For N-Methylated Bis(8-Hydroxyquinoline) Zinc (N = 0, 2, 4, And 5), Anna Rose Falkowitz

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Znq2 has been studied as electroluminescent material. However, no correlation of the structure of Znq2 to resulting device properties has been established. Most reports of Znq2 as an electroluminescent material have not considered the impact of higher order molecular structures on the device properties. By utilization of size exclusion chromatography it has been determined that the dominant species of nMeq2Zn (n = 0, 4, 5) is tetrameric in crystalline form dissolved in chloroform, in thermally vapor deposited films, and in crystalline form dissolved in chloroform and DMSO. The 2Meq2Zn was determined to be solely monomeric under the previously mentioned condition. …

Self-Stabilizing Wormhole Routing, Anthony Brandon Kenitzki Jan 2002

Self-Stabilizing Wormhole Routing, Anthony Brandon Kenitzki

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Parallel and distributed systems are composed of individual processors that communicate with one another by exchanging messages through communication links. When the sender and the receiver of a message are not direct neighbors, intermediate processors must cooperate to ensure proper routing; Wormhole routing is most common in parallel architectures in which messages are sent in small fragments called flits. We assume that each processor will contain a single fixed-size flit buffer for each incoming link. A processor must forward the flit in a given link buffer to another processor before receiving another flit on that link. This permits messages to …

Ecology And Growth Of Tamias Palmeri And Testing Of A Protocol To Monitor Habitat Relationships, Christopher Eric Lowrey Jan 2002

Ecology And Growth Of Tamias Palmeri And Testing Of A Protocol To Monitor Habitat Relationships, Christopher Eric Lowrey

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The ecology of Tamias palmeri is investigated. Presence-absence and relative abundance of T. palmeri are related to principle component scores of habitat variables using logistic regression and multiple linear regression, respectively. Relative abundance of Tamias palmeri estimated with live capture-recapture was positively correlated with shrub cover and negatively correlated with slope. Timing of emergence from dens by juveniles was earlier and weights of juveniles were greater in ravine areas as compared to upslope areas. Track plates were not correlated with trap captures. Track plate success was not correlated with habitat variables. The results of this study were used to build …

Representation Of Special Polynomials By The Cycle Indicator, Jack Lund Schofield Jan 2002

Representation Of Special Polynomials By The Cycle Indicator, Jack Lund Schofield

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Certain classes of special functions have been shown to have Cycle Indicator representations as well as recurrence relations. Most remarkably, it is shown how the Cycle Indicator can be used to unify or generalize special functions. Methods of unifying special functions are elaborated on. It follows that classical special functions with simple logarithms of their generating functions can be classified in this way. Also, there are counter-examples where the Cycle Indicator doesn't represent the special functions given; This thesis represents a study of a journal article called "Cycle Indicators and Special Functions" by Leetsch C. Hsu and Peter Jau-Shyong Shiue …

From Neglected Waste To Protected Space: An Administrative History Of Mojave National Preserve, Eric Charles Nystrom Jan 2002

From Neglected Waste To Protected Space: An Administrative History Of Mojave National Preserve, Eric Charles Nystrom

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The Mojave National Preserve, a unit of the National Park Service, was created in 1994 in southeastern California. Its 1.6 million acres were used historically for extractive industries such as mining and ranching, and its recent history was shaped by the land's proximity to urban Los Angeles. The preserve was the fruit of a long political battle between environmental activists and conservative opponents, and the park's final administrative form and subsequent management was indelibly altered by the compromises made during the legislative fight. The park's subsequent history, including innovative planning efforts, a 1995 attempt by opponents to eliminate the preserve's …

Confidence Intervals For Exposure Risk Assessment, Mark S Kirkham Jan 2002

Confidence Intervals For Exposure Risk Assessment, Mark S Kirkham

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The problem of estimating exposure to a pollutant involves estimation of chemical intake Q. Typically, Q has the form Q = q11q12&cdots;q 1r1/q211q22 &cdots;q2r2t where all thetaij's are unknown means of certain random variables. In assessing the risk to human health from exposure to the pollutant of concern, a confidence interval estimate of Q is needed. In the case of independent normal random variables, point estimates and certain types of interval estimates of a product of several parameters exist in the literature, but not for a ratio of products. In many situations, lot of prior knowledge is available regarding the …

Thermochronology And Geobarometry Of The Granite Mountains, Southeast California: Exhumation Of A Plutonic Complex During Collapse Of The Sevier Orogen, Joseph Louis Kula

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Thermochronologic data and geobarometry from the Granite Mountains indicate exhumation of mid-crustal plutons during Late Cretaceous extensional tectonics. U/Pb zircon and 40Ar/39Ar ornblende ages indicate intrusion, crystallization, and geologically instantaneous cooling through 500°C at ∼75 Ma. K-feldspar multi-diffusion domain modeling indicates a cooling rate gradient from SW to NE of 63, 32, and 16°C/Ma for three samples spanning a transect across the range. NE K-feldspar cooled through ∼252°C by 73 Ma while other samples remained >375°C suggesting a short lived down-to-the-east normal faulting event at ∼75 to 74 Ma. Faster cooling rates with later initial K-feldspar recording (∼71 Ma) suggest …
