Age And Thickness Of The Lithosphere Within The Western And Eastern Basins Of The Black Sea According To Geophysical Data, Eugeniy Verzhbitsky, Ivan Kuzin, Leopold Lobkovsky Jan 2002

Age And Thickness Of The Lithosphere Within The Western And Eastern Basins Of The Black Sea According To Geophysical Data, Eugeniy Verzhbitsky, Ivan Kuzin, Leopold Lobkovsky

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

The ages of the western and eastern basins of the Black Sea have been estimated on the basis of heat-flow data. The obtained ages (70-60 Ma) are in good accord with the time of basins' origin as determined from seismic and magnetic data. During this time, the Black Sea opened as a back-arc basin to the north of the Pontide magmatic arc. The arc prehistory of the Pontides is confirmed by the existence of relict mantle seismicity, which is most active in the eastern Pontides. Nearly synchronous times of origin for the western and eastern basins supports the concept of …

The Syntheses And Characterizations Of Samarium Arsenic Sulfide Compounds, Chad Michael Delp Jan 2002

The Syntheses And Characterizations Of Samarium Arsenic Sulfide Compounds, Chad Michael Delp

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The experiments conducted explored lanthanide-arsenic-sulfide ternary systems with particular emphasis on the lanthanide, samarium. A number of stoichiometric mixtures in the samarium arsenic sulfide ternary system were prepared. The samples were sealed into evacuated silica ampoules and then annealed at 900°C. The final products were identified by characterize by X-ray powder diffraction. The powder analyses were used to construct a portion of the ternary phase diagram at 900°C. Every sample contained three common phases, SmAs, AsS and As4S3. Since these compounds were found in every sample, they were not included in the phase diagram. The phase diagram did split into …

Illiberal Liberalism: Liberal Theology, Anti-Catholicism, & Church Property, Philip A. Hamburger Jan 2002

Illiberal Liberalism: Liberal Theology, Anti-Catholicism, & Church Property, Philip A. Hamburger

Faculty Scholarship

Liberalism has long been depicted as neutral and tolerant. Already in the eighteenth-century, when Englishmen and Americans began to develop modem conceptions of what they called "liberality," they characterized it as elevated above narrow interest and prejudice. Of course, liberality or what now is called "liberalism" can be difficult to define with precision, and there have been divergent, evolving versions of it. Nonetheless, liberalism has consistently been understood to transcend narrow self-interest or bigotry. Accordingly, many Americans have confidently believed in it as a neutral, tolerant, and even universalistic means of claiming freedom from the constraints of traditional and parochial …

Applying Suggestibility Research To The Real World: The Case Of Repeated Questions, Thomas D. Lyon Jan 2002

Applying Suggestibility Research To The Real World: The Case Of Repeated Questions, Thomas D. Lyon

Law and Contemporary Problems

One can discern two parallel trends in the law and the psychology of child witnesses. In the law, appellate courts are beginning to stem the once powerful movement to increase the acceptance of children's testimony and the admissibility of children's out-of-court statements. Lyon analyzes particular strands of each trend.

The Historical Debate Among Leaders Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints On The Topic Of The United Nations, Katie Marie Lenhard

Theses and Dissertations

Since the inception of the United Nations in 1945, leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints have made public statements regarding the international peace and security organization. To the confusion of many Church members, who often look to their leaders for prophetic guidance on numerous spiritual and temporal topics, these statements have been conflicting. Some Church leaders have clearly opposed the United Nations and others have openly supported it, offering various ideological explanations for their beliefs. Yet, it is evident that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has never made an official position on the …
