Continuous Academic Improvement : A Case Study Comparison Of Private And Public School, Shannon Wheelan

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

This research was based on comparing a private high school and a public high school in terms of organizational differences and continuous improvement. The continuous improvement concept is a theory and method used in business for improving an organization and was applied to these schools. There have been previous studies conducted that have shown there are fundamental organizational differences between public and private school. Studies have also shown that using the theory of continuous improvement in an organizational setting may increase efficiency and effectiveness. There were two research questions in this study: (1) Are there differences in organizational characteristics between …

[The Akumal (Mexico) Coral Reef Monitoring Program 1994-2001], Liz Dries Jan 2002

[The Akumal (Mexico) Coral Reef Monitoring Program 1994-2001], Liz Dries

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

The value of coral reefs for developing countries and areas where tourism is on the rise make the management of the reef a high priority. Akumal, Mexico is no exception. For management to be effective, information for accurately evaluating the condition of the reef is critical. This study was done to test the hypothesis that there has been no change in percent coral coverage (PCC) on Las Redes Reef, in Akumal, Mexico between 1996 and 2001. To test this hypothesis I compared data I collected during the summer of 2001 to PCC data collected by interns and students working in …

A Look At Crab Monitoring In The Elkhorn Slough, Jennifer Everly Jan 2002

A Look At Crab Monitoring In The Elkhorn Slough, Jennifer Everly

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Crabs play an important role in Elkhorn Slough. The three main species found in the slough, that are native to it, and that I will be looking at are Pachygrapsus crassipes, the striped shore crab, Hemigrapsus oregonensis, the yellow shore crab, and Cancer antennarius, the Pacific Rock Crab. There is one non native species of crab that is found in the slough, the European green crab, Carcinus maenas. Not much is known about the population sizes of any of these four crab species. The goal of my project was to create and implement a long term monitoring program that could …

Horizontal Merger Analysis Grows Up: A Review Of Chapter 5 Of Richard Posner’S Antitrust Law (2d Ed. 2001), Jonathan Baker Jan 2002

Horizontal Merger Analysis Grows Up: A Review Of Chapter 5 Of Richard Posner’S Antitrust Law (2d Ed. 2001), Jonathan Baker

Contributions to Books

Richard Posner is a central figure in the generation of brilliant lawyers and economists who created the Chicago school of antitrust. Since the first edition of Posner’s Antitrust Law was published in 1976, most of the field has been transformed, in many respects along the very lines he proposed, and at times with a helpful decision from now—Judge Posner pushing that movement along. But horizontal merger law, while revolutionized by the Chicago school’s signature economic approach, has not changed in the precise manner Posner advocated a quarter century ago. Now, with the publication of the second edition of Antitrust Law, …

A Note On Interpolation In The Generalized Schur Class. I. Applications Of Realization Theory, Daniel Alpay, T. Constantinescu, A. Dijksma, J. Rovnyak, A. Dijksma Jan 2002

A Note On Interpolation In The Generalized Schur Class. I. Applications Of Realization Theory, Daniel Alpay, T. Constantinescu, A. Dijksma, J. Rovnyak, A. Dijksma

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

Realization theory for operator colligations on Pontryagin spaces is used to study interpolation and factorization in generalized Schur classes. Several criteria are derived which imply that a given function is almost the restriction of a generalized Schur function. The role of realization theory in coefficient problems is also discussed; a solution of an indefinite Carathéodory-Fejér problem is obtained, as well as a result that relates the number of negative (positive) squares of the reproducing kernels associated with the canonical coisometric, isometric, and unitary realizations of a generalized Schur function to the number of negative (positive) eigenvalues of matrices derived from …

Optimal Simulation Of Two-Qubit Hamiltonians Using General Local Operations, C. H. Bennett, J. I. Cirac, Matthew S. Leifer, D. W. Leung, N. Linden, S. Popescu, G. Vidal

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

We consider the simulation of the dynamics of one nonlocal Hamiltonian by another, allowing arbitrary local resources but no entanglement or classical communication. We characterize notions of simulation, and proceed to focus on deterministic simulation involving one copy of the system. More specifically, two otherwise isolated systems A and B interact by a nonlocal Hamiltonian H≠HA+HB . We consider the achievable space of Hamiltonians H8 such that the evolution e2iH8t can be simulated by the interaction H interspersed with local operations. For any dimensions of A and B, and any nonlocal Hamiltonians H and H8, there exists a scale factor …

Some Extensions Of Loewner's Theory Of Monotone Operator Functions, Daniel Alpay, Vladimir Bolotnikov, A. Dijksma, J. Rovnyak, A. Dijksma

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

Several extensions of Loewner’s theory of monotone operator functions are given. These include a theorem on boundary interpolation for matrix-valued functions in the generalized Nevanlinna class. The theory of monotone operator functions is generalized from scalar- to matrix-valued functions of an operator argument. A notion of -monotonicity is introduced and characterized in terms of classical Nevanlinna functions with removable singularities on a real interval. Corresponding results for Stieltjes functions are presented.

Taxing Problems; Japan, Gene Park

Political Science and International Relations Faculty Works

Most Japanese have long given up waiting for Junichiro Koizumi to achieve anything bold. On July 9th, parliament made a mockery of yet another of the prime minister's cherished causes, by passing a version of his postal-reform plans that fell far short of encouraging private competition.

Defining Dilemmas Down: The Case Of 24, John Parrish Jan 2002

Defining Dilemmas Down: The Case Of 24, John Parrish

Political Science and International Relations Faculty Works

One of the most important concepts in the field of political ethics is the idea of a moral dilemma – understood as a situation in which an agent’s public responsibilities and moral imperatives conflict in such a way that no matter what the agent does she will in some way be committing a moral wrong. In the aftermath of the events of September 11, 2001, the notion of a moral dilemma has undergone a profound reconceptualization in American political discourse, and there has perhaps been no more important cultural forum for that conceptual revision than the quintessential post-9/11 melodrama, FOX …

New Voices In The Tradition: Medieval Hagiography Revisited, Marie Anne Mayeski Jan 2002

New Voices In The Tradition: Medieval Hagiography Revisited, Marie Anne Mayeski

Theological Studies Faculty Works

The author argues for the use of hagiographical texts to expand the evidence for the theological tradition, precisely during the early Middle Ages when more obvious sources are wanting. Her thesis is that there is sound basis for reading the lives of the saints through the lens of doctrinal theology. After giving this evidence, she then exemplifies the value of such a reading by an ecclesiological analysis of Rudolf of Saxony’s life of St. Leoba, a companion of St. Boniface.]

Ideal Theory In Prüfer Domains - An Unconventional Approach, Edward Mosteig Jan 2002

Ideal Theory In Prüfer Domains - An Unconventional Approach, Edward Mosteig

Mathematics, Statistics and Data Science Faculty Works

In Prüfer domains of finite character, ideals are represented as finite intersections of special ideals which are proper generalizations of the classical primary ideals. We show that representations of ideals as shortest intersections of primal or quasi-primary ideals exist and are unique. Moreover, every non-zero ideal is the product of uniquely determined pairwise comaximal quasi-primary ideals. Semigroups of primal and quasi-primary ideals with fixed associated primes are also investigated in arbitrary Prüfer domains. Their structures can be described in terms of the value groups of localizations.

Cosmic Rays Above The Ankle From Z Bursts, Gabriele U. Varieschi Jan 2002

Cosmic Rays Above The Ankle From Z Bursts, Gabriele U. Varieschi

Physics Faculty Works

Neutrinos from far away sources annihilating at the Z resonance on relic neutrinos may give origin to the ultrahigh-energy cosmic rays. Here we present predictions of this mechanism with relic neutrinos lighter than 1 eV, which do not gravitationally cluster. We show that not only the super GZK events, but the "ankle" and all events above it can be accounted for. Most primaries above the ankle are predicted to be nucleons up to $10^{20.0}$ eV and photons at higher energies. We also find an accumulation at the GZK cutoff energy, a hint of which can be seen in the data.

Referendums Education In The United States: Reform Or Assimilation?, Francisco Ramos

School of Education Faculty Works

The antibilingüe movement that is spreading across the United States has become one of the most controversial in the debate on the education of linguistic minorities issues. Ron Unz, the California millionaire who has managed to eliminate bilingual programs in California and Arizona and trying to do the same today in Colorado and Massachusetts, is a clear example of assimilationist movement, which argues that immigrants should give up their languages and vernacular cultures to integrate into American society. This article summarizes the history of bilingualism in the United States, focusing on decisions that have affected the education of minority students, …

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Works

We report the thermal stability of wild type (WT) and 14 different variants of human copper/zinc superoxide dismutase (SOD1) associated with familial amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (FALS). Multiple endothermic unfolding transitions were observed by differential scanning calorimetry for partially metallated SOD1 enzymes isolated from a baculovirus system. We correlated the metal ion contents of SOD1 variants with the occurrence of distinct melting transitions. Altered thermal stability upon reduction of copper with dithionite identified transitions resulting from the unfolding of copper-containing SOD1 species. We demonstrated that copper or zinc binding to a subset of “WT-like” FALS mutants (A4V, L38V, G41S, G72S, D76Y, …
