The Jew In The Bath: Imperiled Imagination In Woolf's The Years, Maren Linett Jan 2002

The Jew In The Bath: Imperiled Imagination In Woolf's The Years, Maren Linett

Department of English Faculty Publications

Many of the earliest critical discussions of Virginia Woolf suppressed her antifascist politics and polemical feminism, charging her with elitism and a fondness for the ivory tower. In an effort to counter such a limited portrait, much “second-wave” feminist discourse since the mid-1970s has, conversely, celebrated Woolf’s progressive political views without spending sufficient energy interrogating their lacunae. In this essay I hope to join current efforts toward more nuanced inquiry into Woolf’s often conflicting and sometimes troubling political positions.1 In particular, this essay offers a corrective to a lingering critical reluctance to investigate Woolf’s antisemitism.2 Such reluctance may result in …

A Baiting System For Delivery Of An Oral Plague Vaccine To Black-Tailed Prairie Dogs, Terry E. Creekmore, Tonie E. Rocke, Jerry Hurley Jan 2002

A Baiting System For Delivery Of An Oral Plague Vaccine To Black-Tailed Prairie Dogs, Terry E. Creekmore, Tonie E. Rocke, Jerry Hurley

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Laboratory and field studies were conducted between July and October 1999 to identify bait preference, biomarker efficacy, and bait acceptance rates for delivering an oral plague vaccine to black-tailed prairie dogs (Cynomys ludovicianus). Twenty juvenile captive prairie dogs were offered alfalfa baits containing either alfalfa, alfalfa and 5% molasses, or alfalfa, 5% molasses and 4% salt. Based on the results of these trials we selected a bait containing alfalfa, 7% molasses, and 1% salt for field trials to determine bait acceptance rates by free-ranging animals. The biomarkers DuPont Blue dye, iophenoxic acid, and tetracycline hydrochloride were orally administered …

Counting Device Selection And Reliability: Synthesis Study, Srinivas Peeta, Pengchang Zhang Jan 2002

Counting Device Selection And Reliability: Synthesis Study, Srinivas Peeta, Pengchang Zhang

JTRP Technical Reports

Accuracy in traffic data detection is important for transportation operations and planning. Currently, inductive loop detectors are the most commonly used traffic counting devices in the field. New technologies are being developed to meet growing data counting and traffic surveillance needs. They include passive infrared, active infrared, passive magnetic, Doppler microwave, radar, passive acoustic, pulse and Doppler ultrasonic and video image processor. However, the relatively recent, but widespread, emergence of these technologies and the consequent sparseness in information on their performance characteristics preclude traffic agencies from making informed choices in the selection of traffic counting devices. This study performs a …

Perkembangan Perdagangan, Perkapalan Dan Pelabuhan Di British Borneo, 1800-1963, Hanizah Idris Jan 2002

Perkembangan Perdagangan, Perkapalan Dan Pelabuhan Di British Borneo, 1800-1963, Hanizah Idris

Student Works (2000-2009)

For the last two decades, there have been remarkably few works that have dealt with British Borneo as a whole. Over time, different works particularly on the political and anthropological aspects have been written on British Borneo but separately as an individual state. Therefore, this thesis focuses on the development of trade, shipping and ports that are also of major significance in the study of British Borneo. From 1800 to 1963, British Borneo had experienced tremendous changes in the development of trade, shipping and ports. As a resource based territory, it has attracted traders and entrepreneurs from other parts of …

A Swat/Microbial Sub-Model For Predicting Pathogen Loadings In Surface And Groundwater At Watershed And Basin Scales, Ali M. Sadeghi, Jeffrey G. Arnold Jan 2002

A Swat/Microbial Sub-Model For Predicting Pathogen Loadings In Surface And Groundwater At Watershed And Basin Scales, Ali M. Sadeghi, Jeffrey G. Arnold

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Despite the many potential sources of release of pathogenic organisms into the environment, agronomic practices that utilize animal manures contaminated with pathogenic or parasitic organisms appear to be the major contributors to watershed or basin contaminations. High rates of land-applied raw manure increase the risks of surface or ground water contamination, both from excess nutrients and pathogenic organisms. Unfortunately, current technologies are not adequate for handling large-scale treatment processes (e.g., composting, digestion, etc.) for stabilizing human pathogens in animal manures before application to agricultural lands. Therefore, there is a need for modeling capabilities to assess risks associated with individual and …

The Challenge: High Quality Seed Of Native Plants To Ensure Successful Establishment, Kenneth P. Vogel Jan 2002

The Challenge: High Quality Seed Of Native Plants To Ensure Successful Establishment, Kenneth P. Vogel

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Native species are planted to re-vegetate former cropland, degraded pastures and rangelands, mined lands, natural areas, roadside right-of-ways, and other land management areas with plants, usually perennials, to stabilize and provide desirable classes of vegetation. Acceptable stands need to be obtained in a reasonable time. Seed of native plants varies widely in seed quality factors including seed size, purity, dormancy, germination, and vigor. Seed quality tests required for sale of native seeds usually include germination, purity, and hard or dormant seeds. These laboratory tests do not always predict the capability of a seed lot to establish a stand under field …

Switchgrass Biomass Production In The Midwest Usa: Harvest And Nitrogen Management, Kenneth P. Vogel, John J. Brejda, Daniel T. Walters, Dwayne R. Buxton Jan 2002

Switchgrass Biomass Production In The Midwest Usa: Harvest And Nitrogen Management, Kenneth P. Vogel, John J. Brejda, Daniel T. Walters, Dwayne R. Buxton

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Information on optimal harvest periods and N fertilization rates for switchgrass (Panicum virgatum L.) grown as a biomass or bioenergy crop in the Midwest USA is limited. Our objectives were to determine optimum harvest periods and N rates for biomass production in the region. Established stands of 'Cave-in-Rock' switchgrass at Ames, IA, and Mead, NE, were fertilized 0, 60, 120, 180, 240, or 300 kg N ha-1. Harvest treatments were two- or one-cut treatments per year, with initial harvest starting in late June or early July (Harvest 1) and continuing at approximately 7-d intervals until the latter …

Genetic Modification Of Lignin Concentration Affects Fitness Of Perennial Herbaceous Plants, M. D. Casler, D. R. Buxton, Kenneth P. Vogel Jan 2002

Genetic Modification Of Lignin Concentration Affects Fitness Of Perennial Herbaceous Plants, M. D. Casler, D. R. Buxton, Kenneth P. Vogel

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Populations of four perennial herbaceous species that were genetically modified for altered lignin content (or associated forage digestibility) by conventional plant breeding were evaluated for two agricultural fitness traits, plant survival and plant biomass, in three Northcentral USA environments for more than 4 years. Reduced lignin concentration or increased digestibility resulted in increased winter mortality in two of four species and reduced biomass in one species. Results from other experiment indicate that these apparent genetic correlations may be ephemeral, suggesting that selection for fitness can be successful within high-digestibility or low-lignin germplasm. Results indicate that perennial plants genetically engineered with …
