Performance Projections For Ballistic Carbon Nanotube Field-Effect Transistors, Jing Guo, Mark S. Lundstrom, Supriyo Datta Jan 2002

Performance Projections For Ballistic Carbon Nanotube Field-Effect Transistors, Jing Guo, Mark S. Lundstrom, Supriyo Datta

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

The performance limits of carbon nanotube field-effect transistors (CNTFETs) are examined theoretically by extending a one-dimensional treatment used for silicon metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistors (MOSFETs). Compared to ballistic MOSFETs, ballistic CNTFETs show similar I-VI-V characteristics but the channel conductance is quantized. For low-voltage, digital applications, the CNTFET with a planar gate geometry provides an on-current that is comparable to that expected for a ballistic MOSFET. Significantly better performance, however, could be achieved with high gate capacitance structures. Because the computed performance limits greatly exceed the performance of recently reported CNTFETs, there is considerable opportunity for progress in device performance.

Concentration Fields In The Solidification Processing Of Metal Matrix Composites, B Moussa, J E. Simpson, S V. Garimella Jan 2002

Concentration Fields In The Solidification Processing Of Metal Matrix Composites, B Moussa, J E. Simpson, S V. Garimella

CTRC Research Publications

A numerical investigation of the solidification of a binary alloy (Al-1.0 wt.% Cu) around cylindrical fibers with different fiber layouts and thermophysical properties was undertaken to gain insight into the processing of fiber-rein- forced metal matrix composites. The focus of this study was on solute transport and redistribution during the solidi-fication process, and the resulting concentration fields in the solidified alloy matrix. Change of phase in the alloy was formulated using a modified version of the temperature-transforming method for the energy equation. A source term that accounts for the solute rejection at the interface was incorporated into the solute concentration …

Toward A Reconfigurable Snmp-Based Distributed Monitoring Mechanism For Networked Computing Systems, Rajesh Subramanyan, Jose Miguel-Alonso, Jose A.B. Fortes Jan 2002

Toward A Reconfigurable Snmp-Based Distributed Monitoring Mechanism For Networked Computing Systems, Rajesh Subramanyan, Jose Miguel-Alonso, Jose A.B. Fortes

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

The dynamic nature of large-size Network Computing Systems (NCSs) and the varying monitoring demands from the end-users pose serious challenges for monitoring systems (MSs). A statically configured MS initially adjusted to perform optimally may end performing poorly. A reconfiguration mechanism for a distributed MS is proposed. It enables the MS to react to changes in the available resources, operating conditions, and monitoring requirements, while maintaining high performance and low monitoring overheads. The distributed MS is organized as a tree, consisting of managed nodes running agents, one or more levels of intermediate-level managers (ILMs), and a top-level manager (TLM) for overall …

Semidefinite Programming Duality And Linear Time-Invariant Systems, Venkataramanan Balakrishnan, Lieven Vandenberghe Jan 2002

Semidefinite Programming Duality And Linear Time-Invariant Systems, Venkataramanan Balakrishnan, Lieven Vandenberghe

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

Several important problems in control theory can be reformulated as semidefinite programming problems, i.e., minimization of a linear objective subject to Linear Matrix Inequality (LMI) constraints. From convex optimization duality theory, conditions for infeasibility of the LMIs as well as dual optimization problems can be formulated. These can in turn be re-interpreted in control or system theoretic terms, often yielding new results or new proofs for existing results from control theory. We explore such connections for a few problems associated with linear time-invariant systems.

A Technical Report On A Polytopic System Approach For The Hybrid Control Of A Diesel Engine Using Vgt/Egr, Sorin Bengea, Ray Decarlo, Martin Corless, Giorgio Rizzoni Jan 2002

A Technical Report On A Polytopic System Approach For The Hybrid Control Of A Diesel Engine Using Vgt/Egr, Sorin Bengea, Ray Decarlo, Martin Corless, Giorgio Rizzoni

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

This paper develops a hybrid/gain scheduled control to move a diesel engine through a driving profile represented as a set of 12 operating points in the 7-dimensional state space of a 7th order nonlinear state model. The calculations for the control design are based on a 3rd order(reduced) model of the Diesel engine on which state space is projected the 12 operating points. About each operating point, we generate a 3rd order nonlinear error models of the Diesel engine. Using the error model for each operating point, a control design is set forth as a system of LMI's. The solution …

Optimum Compression To Ventilation Ratios In Cpr Under Realistic, Practical Conditions: A Physiological And Mathematical Analysis, Charles F. Babbs, Karl B. Kern Jan 2002

Optimum Compression To Ventilation Ratios In Cpr Under Realistic, Practical Conditions: A Physiological And Mathematical Analysis, Charles F. Babbs, Karl B. Kern

Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

Objective: To develop and evaluate a practical formula for the optimum ratio of compressions to ventilations in CPR. The optimum value of a parameter is that for which a desired result is maximized. Here the desired result is assumed to be either oxygen delivery to peripheral tissues or a combination of oxygen delivery and waste product removal. Method: Equations describing oxygen delivery and blood flow during CPR as functions of the number of compressions and the number of ventilations delivered over time were developed from principles of classical physiology. These equations were solved explicitly in terms of the compression/ventilation ratio …

Determining The Optimum Number Of Hidden Nodes In Constructive Functional-Link Networks Using Validation And Vc Dimension, Hoi-Ming Chi, Okan K. Ersoy Jan 2002

Determining The Optimum Number Of Hidden Nodes In Constructive Functional-Link Networks Using Validation And Vc Dimension, Hoi-Ming Chi, Okan K. Ersoy

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

In this paper, a new and powerful learning algorithm, which combines the idea of constructive algorithm, functional-link neural network and VC dimension, is introduced. Its structure consists of two stages, a mapping stage and a learning stage, corresponding to three layers, namely, input layer, hidden layer and output layer. The input training vectors are initially mapped to the feature vectors in the mapping stage by multiplying with a random matrix, followed by a pointwise nonlinear transformation. This is done starting with only one hidden node. In the learning stage, the feature vectors are fed into the least squares learning module …
