Fiber Performance And Quality Of Angora Rabbits (Oryctolagus Cuniculus) In Different Trims, Juan Jaime Blacutt Toledo Jan 2002

Fiber Performance And Quality Of Angora Rabbits (Oryctolagus Cuniculus) In Different Trims, Juan Jaime Blacutt Toledo

Theses and Dissertations

In 132 rabbits belonging to the Cunicola La Esperanza Farm of the city of El Alto in the department of La Paz, the principle physical characteristics of the angora rabbit fiber were determined in a period of 3 shearings. As such they were organized into 2 groups, clearly differentiated by their sex (female and male). The obtained fiber of the different shearings were weighed in order to determine the performance of each animal and subsequently analyzed the wool in the Experimental Station of Patacamaya, where they determined the diameter, length of hair and marrow composition. The results were subjected to …

Book Of Mormon Stories Diglot Reader On Computer, Neal S. Harmon Jan 2002

Book Of Mormon Stories Diglot Reader On Computer, Neal S. Harmon

Theses and Dissertations

This report describes the design, development, and evaluation of a computer-based diglot reader of the Book of Mormon Stories of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Di means two and glot means language, thus a diglot reader combines two languages into one reader in order to teach a person to read in a new language. The program, which runs on both Macintosh and Windows computer platforms, contains fifteen chapters of the Book of Mormon Stories and introduces about four hundred Spanish words. This report includes a literature review on the diglot method and related materials, a description of …

The Effects Of Computer-Based Metacognitive Strategy Training For Adult Second Language Learners, Heidi D. Hyte

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of a metacognitive language learning strategy training program that was implemented into computer-assisted language learning (CALL) software on second language learners' independent use of metacognition and language learning strategies (LLS). Questions under investigation included what effect this metacognitive training had on learners' independent use of metacognition, the differences in use of metacognitive strategies between fast and slow language learners, and the effect of learners' perceptions of metacognition on their use of LLS and specific metacognitive strategies.

The subjects included 239 missionaries learning Spanish as a second language at the Missionary …

Time As Motivation: Selected Theories As Compared To Modern Revelation, Jill Judkins Jan 2002

Time As Motivation: Selected Theories As Compared To Modern Revelation, Jill Judkins

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis proposes that human beings by virtue of living in each new present moment are motivated to develop strategies to secure the best possible outcome in their lived experience. A personal account of the phenomenological experience of time is presented and a brief history is given. The implications associated with being thrown into the present moment make apparent the weaknesses of the current assumptions that the slices of the present moment form a continuity of past and future and create a coherent synthesis of life. The assumption that human beings are intentional, goal-directed, and prone to seek meaning in …

Balance And Conflict: Variation In Attaining Work-Family Fit Among A Homogeneous Population, Laura C. Koch Jan 2002

Balance And Conflict: Variation In Attaining Work-Family Fit Among A Homogeneous Population, Laura C. Koch

Theses and Dissertations

The concept of work-family fit has recently emerged in the work and family literature, comparable to work-family balance in that it represents interactions between work and family, and yet distinct from balance in its sense of universal ownership and responsibility. Using Barnett's (1998) model of the work-social system interface as a framework, this study explores the relationship between and predictive factors of work-family fit and work-family balance. Data are from a survey of Brigham Young University's Marriott School of Management (MSM) graduate school alumni (n = 273). Findings indicate that fit and balance are indeed two separate constructs, with fit …

Book Review: Citizens Plus: Aboriginal Peoples And The Canadian State, By Alan C. Cairns, Shin Imai Jan 2002

Book Review: Citizens Plus: Aboriginal Peoples And The Canadian State, By Alan C. Cairns, Shin Imai

Articles & Book Chapters

Cairns is critical of suggestions of the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples. In his view, they pushed for a "maximum amount of self-government" for First Nations, while neglecting the "civic relation of Aboriginal peoples and individuals to federal and provincial communities and their governments." Legal academics, he observes, have a "pervasive tendency" to "undervalue, underestimate, or overlook the continuing links,"and have become members of an"intellectual social movement." This book review is critical of Cairns for failing to provide details on an alternative and for taking a mono cultural view of what it means to be "Canadian".

Legacy To The People: Community And The Orange County Regional History Center, Robert L. Beatty Ii Jan 2002

Legacy To The People: Community And The Orange County Regional History Center, Robert L. Beatty Ii

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The development and birth of the Orange County Regional History Center is perhaps unlike any other local history museum in the United States. Its story is worth telling because of its long gestation, the difficulties in bringing this center to life, and the goals of the people who made it possible. All of these elements are a vital part of the history of Orange County, Florida and should not be overlooked.

In this light, this thesis will discuss more fully three topics in relation to the creation of the new History Center. First, it will look at the American museum …

Haunting And Hunting: Bodily Resurrection And The Occupation Of History In Thomas Pynchon's Mason & Dixon, Justin Scott Coe Jan 2002

Haunting And Hunting: Bodily Resurrection And The Occupation Of History In Thomas Pynchon's Mason & Dixon, Justin Scott Coe

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

Just before publication of Mason & Dixon, Thomas Pynchon wrote a review of Gabriel Garcia Marquez's Love in the Time of Cholera, in which he says that to assert the resurrection of the body [is] today as throughout history an unavoidably revolutionary idea (Heart's Eternal Vow). That this revolutionary idea is essentially a religious one is a fact that many Pynchon critics attempt to placate by identifying in his works a secularization of religious themes. Robert Hipkiss identifies, in place of religion, a search for an operative spiritual force in Pynchon's previous novels, which he assures us is …

Navigating The Starless Night: Strategies For Understanding Autobiogeography, Matthew Wolf-Meyer, Davin Heckman Jan 2002

Navigating The Starless Night: Strategies For Understanding Autobiogeography, Matthew Wolf-Meyer, Davin Heckman

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

Ancient mapmakers relied upon the presence of celestial bodies for their conceptualization of the world, for their external knowledge-making tools, as if a far-off body could help to make sense of our terrestrial life/as if it couldn't. Cosmology, as a practice, relied on the construction of an external body of knowledge that the local meaning-maker could situate him- or herself into, and more broadly, their entire society and culture -- the interior is determined by its relationship to the exterior (or the exteriorized). For the ancient Greeks then, the font of Western culture, this cosmology works at once …

Autobiography And Geography: A Self-Arranging Question, Frédéric Regard Jan 2002

Autobiography And Geography: A Self-Arranging Question, Frédéric Regard

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

The border between fiction and truth in autobiography has been the subject of numerous investigations, yet the question of what we might call the assignations to residence of the author remains largely ignored. Critics have written abundantly about autobiography in its relation to the origin of the author as living personality with his own story, but never truly treated the idea of the spatial modalities, the layout, of the author's writing self. In his relatively unknown 1967 article On Other Places, Michel Foucault, then on assignment in Tunis, saw in this thematic situation the stage of a …
