Exercise and Sport Studies: Faculty Publications

We measured blood erythropoietin (EPO) concentration, arterial O2 saturation (SaO2), and urine PO2 in 48 subjects (32 men and 16 women) at sea level and after 6 and 24 h at simulated altitudes of 1,780, 2,085, 2,454, and 2,800 m. Renal blood flow (Doppler) and Hb were determined at sea level and after 6 h at each altitude (n = 24) to calculate renal O2 delivery. EPO increased significantly after 6 h at all altitudes and continued to increase after 24 h at 2,454 and 2,800 m, although not at 1,780 or 2,085 m. The increase in EPO varied markedly …

Skin Cooling Maintains Cerebral Blood Ffow Velocity And Orthostatic Tolerance During Tilting In Heated Humans, Thad E. Wilson, Jian Cui, Rong Zhang, Sarah Witkowski, Craig G. Crandall

Exercise and Sport Studies: Faculty Publications

Orthostatic tolerance is reduced in the heat-stressed human. The purpose of this project was to identify whether skin-surface cooling improves orthostatic tolerance. Nine subjects were exposed to 10 min of 60° head-up tilting in each of four conditions: normothermia (NT-tilt), heat stress (HT-tilt), normothermia plus skin-surface cooling 1 min before and throughout tilting (NT-tiltcool), and heat stress plus skin-surface cooling 1 min before and throughout tilting (HT-tiltcool). Heating and cooling were accomplished by perfusing 46 and 15°C water, respectively, though a tube-lined suit worn by each subject. During HT-tilt, four of nine subjects developed presyncopal symptoms resulting in the termination …

Translation Invariance And Finite Additivity In A Probability Measure On The Natural Numbers, Robert Gardner, Robert Price Jan 2002

Translation Invariance And Finite Additivity In A Probability Measure On The Natural Numbers, Robert Gardner, Robert Price

ETSU Faculty Works

Inspired by the "two envelopes exchange paradox," a finitely additive probability measure m on the natural numbers is introduced. The measure is uniform in the sense that m ((i))=m ((j)) for all i, j∈□. The measure is shown to be translation invariant and has such desirable properties as m ((i∈□| i=0 (mod2)))=1/2. For any r∈ [0, 1], a set A is constructed such that m (A)=r; however, m is not defined on the power set of □. Finally, a resolution to the two envelopes exchange paradox is presented in terms of m.

World Conference Against Racism: New Avenues For Slavery Reparations?, Michelle E. Lyons Jan 2002

World Conference Against Racism: New Avenues For Slavery Reparations?, Michelle E. Lyons

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

The reparations movement has had a long and tumultuous history, as past attempts to obtain equitable relief have failed through common law, international law, legislation, and constitutional law. However, recent developments in these areas have pushed the reparations movement to the forefront. For example, Farmer-Paellmann v. Fleetboston Financial Corp. and similar 'suits have renewed the common law claim for reparations by identifying corporations that have kept record of their involvement in slavery and naming the corporations as concrete defendants. By naming corporate defendants, as compared to governmental or individual defendants, the suits have eliminated an enormous weakness in past efforts, …

A Spatio-Temporal Data Model For Zoning, Philip J. Uhl Jan 2002

A Spatio-Temporal Data Model For Zoning, Philip J. Uhl

Theses and Dissertations

Planning departments are besieged with temporal/historical information. While for many institutions historical information can be relegated to archives, planning departments have a constant need to access and query their historical information, particularly their historical spatial information such as zoning. This can be a cumbersome process fraught with inaccuracies due to the changing organizational methods and the extended historical legacies of most municipalities. Geographic Information Systems can be a tool to provide a solution to the difficulties in querying spatio-temporal planning data. Using a data model designed specifically to facilitate the querying of historical zoning information, queries can be performed to …

Determination Of Protein Profile And Presence Of Antibodies In Llama Seminal Plasma (Llama Glama), Francisco Flores Lópes Jan 2002

Determination Of Protein Profile And Presence Of Antibodies In Llama Seminal Plasma (Llama Glama), Francisco Flores Lópes

Theses and Dissertations

Internationally, Bolivia has the largest llama population followed by Peru. This makes our country a power in this renewable resource for working and generating economic development. This is mainly because of the quality of llama meat, which has nutritional properties superior to other animal species. The development and research in our country of llamas is not very significant. But in other countries advanced studies have been done for years, specifically in the area of reproduction, which represents problems for intensive repopulation because of singular characteristics of semen and copulation. The present research work was done at the UAC in Tiahuanacu …

Analysis Of Genetic Variability Of Quinoa (Chenopodium Quinoa Wild.) Germ Plasm Around Lake Titicaca, Milton Víctor Pinto Porcel

Theses and Dissertations

With the goal of analyzing the genetic variability of quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa Willd) germ plasm around Lake Titicaca, which is conserved in the National Bank of High Andean Grains of the PROINPA Altiplano Regional Foundation, the agromorphological behavior of 432 quinoa samples from the surrounding area (both Bolivian and Peruvian) were characterized and evaluated. This activity occurred at agricultural step 99/2000 of Belén Agricultural Station (16°1' South by 68°42' West), with the San Andrés Higher University Faculty of Agronomy, which because of its proximity to the lake represents climate conditions like those of the studied material's origin. In order to …

Judicial Restraints On Illegal State Violence: Israel And The United States, John T. Parry Jan 2002

Judicial Restraints On Illegal State Violence: Israel And The United States, John T. Parry

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

This Article examines the role of courts in controlling state violence in the United States and Israel. The Author considers how U.S. federal courts should respond to illegal state violence by comparing a U.S. Supreme Court case, "City of Los Angeles v. Lyons", with a case decided by the Supreme Court of Israel, Public Committee Against Torture in Israel v. Israel. Part II highlights the legal issues that were central to each court in reaching a decision, including standing, the scope of equitable discretion to craft remedies, and baseline attitudes towards illegal government action. Part III examines the doctrines discussed …

Foreign Sales Corporations--Subsidies, Sanctions, And Trade Wars, Candace Carmichael Jan 2002

Foreign Sales Corporations--Subsidies, Sanctions, And Trade Wars, Candace Carmichael

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

The largest sanctions in the history of the World Trade Organization, the need to stabilize an ailing economy, and the need to maintain strong alliances in the face of a new global war on terrorism are all issues the United States currently faces in deciding how to resolve its dispute with the European Union regarding U.S. tax policy. In 1997, the European Union filed a complaint with the WTO claiming that the then-current U.S. tax regime violated U.S. international trade agreements. The European Union contended that the U.S. tax system gave rise to export-contingent subsidies, in violation of U.S. trade …

The Eu Privacy Directive And The Resulting Safe Harbor, Angela Vitale Jan 2002

The Eu Privacy Directive And The Resulting Safe Harbor, Angela Vitale

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

The rapid growth of the Internet and the importance of international business operations have thrust the issue of Internet privacy into the center of domestic and international political debates. Varying definitions of privacy have led to numerous--often inconsistent--legislative schemes to protect privacy on the Internet. These inconsistencies have made it difficult for companies to penetrate foreign markets and to maintain international operations. Of primary concern to U.S. companies is the EU Privacy Directive. The Directive requires U.S. companies that attempt to interact with potential customers or their own employees in the European Union either to qualify for a "Safe Harbor" …

Corporate Governance And The Global Social Void, Lee A. Tavis Jan 2002

Corporate Governance And The Global Social Void, Lee A. Tavis

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

This Article argues that the components of globalization--economic integration, democratization, and global governance networks--are changing the nature of corporate governance and the prospects for peace. Multinational enterprises are the instruments of economic integration. As such, multinationals as a group deserve credit for the positive productivity-related wealth effects of the process. As the implementing institutions, these enterprises are also inextricably related to the inequality--the social void--resulting from globalization that threatens peace.

Hyper competition in the global product markets and the demands of the financial markets determine, to a large extent, the activities of the multinational. Alternatively, there is an evolving opportunity …

War And The Business Corporation, Eric W. Orts Jan 2002

War And The Business Corporation, Eric W. Orts

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

Next, the Article addresses the nature of the business corporation in the context of modern war by surveying standard legal, ethical, and economic understandings of corporate governance. The Article concludes by arguing that the recognition of the moral and …

Corporate Governance In The Cause Of Peace: An Environmental Perspective, Donald O. Mayer Jan 2002

Corporate Governance In The Cause Of Peace: An Environmental Perspective, Donald O. Mayer

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

This Article examines the role of multinational corporations in creating global peace. Part I discusses the role of multinational corporations in the global economy, emphasizing the relationship between multinational corporations, governments, and the environment. Part II explores whether corporations have a moral duty to oppose ill-conceived laws and policy proposals and to support well-conceived laws that encourage efficiency and sustainability, but may hinder short-term profitability. Part III expands and further explores the argument set forth in Part II by examining the continuing dependency of the United States and other industrialized democracies on oil from the Middle East. Part IV concludes …

Part IV analyzes the Privacy Directive in detail, while Part V explores possible effects that the Privacy Directive might have on international relations.

Interview: The Business Of Peace, Madeleine Albright, B. Joseph White Jan 2002

Interview: The Business Of Peace, Madeleine Albright, B. Joseph White

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

I think the thing that we have really seen, Joe, recently, is the fact that we have global companies that are situated everywhere and are very much a part of the societies in which they operate. The way that they can contribute is by really embedding themselves in the local communities and by providing economic support within those communities to help mitigate some of the aspects of poverty within that particular milieu where they are operating. They can contribute by basically making it clear to people that we are all part of the same story. Just because you may be …

The Multinational And The "New Stakeholder": Examining The Business Case For Human Rights, Scott Greathead Jan 2002

The Multinational And The "New Stakeholder": Examining The Business Case For Human Rights, Scott Greathead

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

Business managers who ignore these realities--the concerns of these new corporate stakeholders--do so at the risk of their company's brand and their own careers. These are just a few examples of the new stakeholders of multinational corporations--workers, consumers, investors, indigenous peoples, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and the media...

The concerns of these new stakeholders embrace human rights. It is a much broader concept of human rights, however, than the civil and political rights that used to dominate the agenda. Former concerns centered on freedom from arbitrary arrest, detentions, and other due process rights, freedom of speech and association, and governmental abuses …
