The Roles And Attributes Of Human Resource Leaders During Organizational Restructuring, Alison Anne Brown
Dissertations
Problem. As the number of organizations involved in major restructuring increases, Human Resource (HR) leaders find themselves in a labyrinth of evolving roles. How might they facilitate the organization's desire to successfully wed human needs and experiences to profit expectations and strategies?
Purpose. This qualitative study seeks to increase understanding of the dual role played by human resource leadership, as they are both survivors and facilitators of organizational restructuring. It answers the overarching question: What are the unique contributions made by HR leaders to the organizational restructuring process?
Methodology. Through a purposive sampling process, 11 HR leaders were identified who …

A Descriptive Multiple Case Study Of Caucasian Female Suicide Attempters: Risk And Protective Factors, Janice Johnson Browne
Dissertations
Problem
Suicide is a problem globally and in the United States. Suicide rates for youth have remained particularly high. Caucasian men complete more suicidal acts than women, but women are more frequent suicide attempters. To gain information about the phenomenon of female suicide attempting, it is important to study the attempter. Awareness of risk and protective factors is necessary to intervene and prevent future incidences of suicide and suicide attempting.
Methodology
For this research a descriptive case study design was utilized. Three suicide attempters who had attempted suicide one or more times in the past was the sample population for …
Franchises: An Option For Business Owners With Disabilities, Nancy Arnold Ph.D., University Of Montana Rural Institute
Franchises: An Option For Business Owners With Disabilities, Nancy Arnold Ph.D., University Of Montana Rural Institute
Employment
Franchises are quite popular and may be an option for business owners with disabilities. Mike Powers, author of How to Open a Franchise Business, says that about one-third of today’s franchises are owned or co-owned by women and about one-tenth are minority owned. Franchising offers a good opportunity for potential business owners with disabilities--especially with careful planning, investigation, and an adequate financial base.
The Effects Of Information Utilization On Corporate Decision-Making And Export Performance, Trond Breien Peersen
The Effects Of Information Utilization On Corporate Decision-Making And Export Performance, Trond Breien Peersen
University of Kentucky Master's Theses
This study investigates if companies that actively use export information have higher export growth rates or greater satisfaction with export performance measures than non-users. Organizational communication structures relating to information flow to decision makers is investigated to provide further insight into the role of export information. The study is based upon the knowledge utilization theory which states company/user characteristics are as important to information utilization as the characteristics of the specific piece of information. Bivariate analysis does not indicate a direct relationship between information use and reported higher export growth rates over the past four years. However, there are indications …
"That's Just The Way We Like It": The Children's Horror Film In The 1980'S, Christina Mitchell Bentley
"That's Just The Way We Like It": The Children's Horror Film In The 1980'S, Christina Mitchell Bentley
University of Kentucky Master's Theses
The decade of the 1980s has often been considered a reactionary artistic wasteland in film studies, but it was nonetheless a period of volatile changes for the film industry. This period saw the decline of the mainstream horror film and the rise of the family film, two currents that reflect and illuminate the enormous changes in film production, marketing, and distribution. The hybrid genre of the childrens horror film, born in the 1980s, is particularly apt for discussing both the industry changes in this period and childrens relationship as viewers to the medium of film. The thesis defines the childrens …
The Role Of Social And Dispositional Variables Associated With Emotional Processing In Adjustment To Breast Cancer, John E. Schmidt
The Role Of Social And Dispositional Variables Associated With Emotional Processing In Adjustment To Breast Cancer, John E. Schmidt
University of Kentucky Master's Theses
Recent theories suggest that cognitive and emotional processing is critical to successful adjustment to traumatic experiences, such as breast cancer. Cognitive and emotional processing of trauma can be facilitated by both dispositional (e.g., emotional intelligence) and situational (e.g., social supports, social constraints) factors. The present study investigated the relationship between emotional intelligence and current social support and constraints in a sample of 190 breast cancer survivors (mean age=48.3 years; SD=8.9). Women were recruited via postings to on-line breast cancer support groups. Postings to support groups described the study, and provided a link to the study web site. The study consisted …
Pigs In Space: Ghosts, Gender And Sexuality In A Debate About Regulating Industrial Hog Farms In Kentucky, Mary E. Curran
Pigs In Space: Ghosts, Gender And Sexuality In A Debate About Regulating Industrial Hog Farms In Kentucky, Mary E. Curran
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
In 1997, Governor Paul Patton of Kentucky asked the state Cabinet of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection to develop administrative regulations for industrial hog farms in the state. The regulatory process has been contentious. From 1997 through 1998, the Cabinet held five public hearings to elicit comments on the proposed regulations. This study is designed to answer two questions. First, how, within parameters of participation established by the Kentucky Cabinet of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection, have participants in the debate deployed notions of risk to privilege certain gendered and sexualized farming identities, farming practices, and notions of rurality? Second, …
Strain Control Of Piezoelectric Materials Using An Applied Electron Flux, Philip Clark Hadinata
Strain Control Of Piezoelectric Materials Using An Applied Electron Flux, Philip Clark Hadinata
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation examines the response of piezoelectric material strain to electron flux influence. A plate of PZT5h is prepared as the specimen. The positive electrode is removed, and the negative electrode is connected to a power amplifier. Sixteen strain gages are attached as the strain sensor. The specimen is placed in a vacuum chamber, then the positive side is illuminated by electron beam. The characteristic of the static strain response is predicted by deriving the equation strain/deflection of the plate. Two methods are used, the Electro-Mechanical Equations and numerical analysis using Finite Element Method. The settings of the electron gun …
Conflict Of Economic Laws: From Sovereignty To Substance, Hannah Buxbaum
Conflict Of Economic Laws: From Sovereignty To Substance, Hannah Buxbaum
Articles by Maurer Faculty
This article examines how the globalization of economic markets, and attendant changes in international regulatory strategies, challenge the traditional framework of private international law. It examines a variety of developments in the areas of securities, antitrust, and bankruptcy law, analyzing the ways in which they undermine the conception of regulatory power as grounded in the territorial authority of sovereign states. Specifically, the article argues that these changes reflect a shift in conflicts jurisprudence away from the traditional jurisdiction-selecting model and toward a substance-based model, in which a state's economic policy interests can be protected simply through assurance that the substance …

The New Basel Capital Accord: Making It Effective With Stronger Market Discipline, Harald Benink, Clas Wihlborg
The New Basel Capital Accord: Making It Effective With Stronger Market Discipline, Harald Benink, Clas Wihlborg
Business Faculty Articles and Research
In January 2001 the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision proposed a new capital adequacy framework to respond to deficiencies in the 1988 Capital Accord on credit risk. The main elements or ‘pillars’ of the proposal are capital requirements based on the internal risk-ratings of individual banks, expanded and active supervision, and information disclosure requirements to enhance market discipline. We discuss the incentive effects of the proposed regulation. In particular, we argue that it provides incentives for banks to develop new ways to evade the intended consequences of the proposed regulation. Supervision alone cannot prevent banks from ‘gaming and manipulation’ of …

Generational Marketing, Missy Mckinney
Generational Marketing, Missy Mckinney
Whittier Scholars Program
In this paper I will examine the relationship between generations and the evolution of marketing as evidenced by a single product, Coca Cola. I will be using statistics and generalizations made about the Baby Boomers (born 1943-1960) and the so-called Generation Xers (born 1961-1981) to display the changes marketing has undergone and to explain what attitudes have changed the direction of marketing. In order to do that, is important first to explain the context in which these generation exist, as well as the characteristics that overwhelmingly classify the people who were born into them. In order to show these changes …

Books
This book offers human rights practitioners and scholars a lens into strategies and arguments for the protection of economic, social and cultural rights before the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights and the Inter-American Court of Human Rights, particularly through the regional system's individual petitions process. It systematically compiles the regional bodies' major statements on social rights from the 1960s through 1999, describes the system's procedures, and offers strategic pathways and arguments for finding social rights protections solidly grounded in each of the regional system's major human rights instruments. It also offers a model petition and provides strategic advice on framing …

Renewing Congregations: The Contribution Of Faith-Based Community Organizing, Mary Ann Ford Flaherty, Richard L. Wood
Sociology Faculty and Staff Publications
Congregations of faith seek to live out the call of their faith traditions in a culture experiencing enormous change. One of the key shifts continuing to occur is the pressure experienced by families and communities in a culture of rising individualism and global economics. The emerging market-driven economy is expanding to influence more than just the acquisition of things. Relationships and communities are now being seen as commodities that are bought and sold.
Shrimp Adjust Their Sex Ratio To Fluctuating Age Distributions, Eric Charnov, Robert Hannah
Shrimp Adjust Their Sex Ratio To Fluctuating Age Distributions, Eric Charnov, Robert Hannah
Biology Faculty & Staff Publications
Long-term data sets that quantitatively confirm basic ecological theory are rare for field populations. Highly variable recruitment often causes wide temporal variation in population age distribution and basic theory for adaptive sex ratio often predicts sex ratio tracking' to match the fluctuating age distribution. Using sex-changing shrimp as a model system, we test this in a new data set of 20 years duration. The new data support the theory, despite intense fishery exploitation that itself has greatly altered the age distribution in recent years.
