The Status Of Seamless Articulation Within West Virginia's Education System., Kathy Jo D'Antoni
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The purpose of this study was to conduct descriptive research that would reflect the current status, facilitators, and barriers of the seamless articulation process occurring in West Virginia's education system. The study provides vital information to education administrators responsible for the implementation of a seamless education system. Community & technical college administrators and secondary school administrators were surveyed to elicit their perceptions as to the importance, implementation level, facilitators, and barriers of seamless articulation. Descriptive statistics were used to conduct the statistical analysis. Evaluation of the data indicated that both administrative groups perceived seamless articulation processes as highly essential. However, …

A Comparison Of Psychologists Who Engage In Nonsexual And Sexual Dual Relationships With Psychologists Who Do Not., Debra Kristine Ehlert
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The purpose of this study was to examine and understand potential differences between psychologists who have engaged in a nonsexual and sexual dual relationship and psychologists who have not. Psychologists from across the United States (N = 59) completed questionnaires concerning object relations, parentification, narcissistic injury, self-esteem, and ethical judgment. Measures included a demographic questionnaire, the Bell Object Relations Inventory (BORI) with four subscales of alienation, insecure attachment, egocentricity, and social incompetence), the Parentification Questionnaire (PQ), the Narcissistic Injury Scale (NIS), the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSE), the Ethical Judgment Scale (EJS), and four open-ended questions regarding the experience of being …

Progression Of Chronic Renal Disease In Several Animal Models: Possible Role Of Decreased Renal Nitric Oxide Production As A Primary Causative Factor., Aaron D. Erdely
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Chronic renal disease is the progressive loss of renal function that can lead to end-stage renal disease. Recent studies from our laboratory have shown decreased total NO production in patients with renal disease. Animal models have shown decreased total and renal NO production and chronic NOS inhibition in otherwise healthy rats causes renal injury. The overall objective in this set of studies was to investigate intrarenal NO production in various models of CRD and determine if NO deficiency parallels, and perhaps causes renal injury. In the first study, we report that normal male SD rats exhibit age-dependent declines in total …
The Influence Of Spanish Music In "Cerdana" By Deodat De Severac., Jaume Fabregas I Marcet
The Influence Of Spanish Music In "Cerdana" By Deodat De Severac., Jaume Fabregas I Marcet
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
French (Occitan) composer Deodat de Severac (1872-1921) completed his suite Cerdana in 1911. In it he included rhythmic, harmonic and melodic elements of Spanish music, as well as references to Spanish life and culture. In the present project, I have analyzed these influences, and related passages from Cerdana to traditional Spanish music, instruments, dances, and culture from which he drew inspiration. This document includes an introductory chapter with a statement of purpose and limitations of the project, a chapter reviewing the literature studied and a third chapter about Deodat de Severac and Cerdana which constitutes the main body of this …

The Effects Of A One-Week Training Course On Preservice Pete Students' Knowledge Of Critical Elements, Error Detection Skill And Feedback Precision., Michael Allen Graves
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The use of pedagogical skills such as critical element knowledge, error detection skill, and feedback precision are deemed necessary by researchers in creating effective teachers. However, most studies have examined these skills independently rather than studying them as a process. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of a 1-week intervention program on the feedback giving process. Specifically, the study examined (1) PETE students knowledge of critical elements, (2) the ability to detect errors from a video performance, and (3) the precision of feedback following such an observation on 12 movement skills. Seeing whether the feedback process …
The Urotsa Cell Line As A Model Of Human Urothelium., Michael Ronald Rossi
The Urotsa Cell Line As A Model Of Human Urothelium., Michael Ronald Rossi
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The UROtsa cell line is a unique model of human urothelium with considerable utility in toxicology-based research. UROtsa cells maintained in serum-free medium have several morphological features of transitional epithelium of the urinary bladder including a multilayered appearance and apically located umbrella-like cells that exhibit tight junctions. These cells also have a basal expression pattern of heat shock protein (hsp) and metallothionein (MT) genes similar to that observed in in situ urothelium. To characterize the functional heat shock and metallothionein stress response in UROtsa cells, confluent cultures grown in serum-free medium were treated with a variety of acute and chronic …
The Effects Of Age On The Chromosomal And Physiological Integrity Of Human Sperm., Eddie D. Sloter
The Effects Of Age On The Chromosomal And Physiological Integrity Of Human Sperm., Eddie D. Sloter
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Integrated biomarkers of physiologic and genetic damage in sperm are needed to identify factors that affect male fertility and influence a father's risk of producing abnormal progeny. Offspring studies show a preferential paternal origin for heritable structural chromosomal abnormalities, presenting the need for methods to efficiently detect structural chromosomal abnormalities in human sperm. This dissertation breaks new conceptual ground toward the understanding of paternally transmitted genetic disease by adapting FISH technology to detect human sperm that carry chromosomal breaks and partial chromosomal duplications and deletions and by integrating state-of-the-art biomarkers of semen quality including computer-assisted sperm analysis (CASA). These sperm …

Doctor of Ministry Projects
The task of this project is narrative preaching in the context of the Hispanic Seventh-day Adventist Church, in Vista California. It is a present reality that different voices compete for its attention, and in such an environment God’s Word frequently goes unheard, and is not necessarily understood by the different generations of Hispanics in a given church. Thus it is of critical importance that the gospel be heard in a language this culture readily understands. Because it is specifically attuned to the contemporary sensibility of human beings, narrative and narrative forms of preaching have particular power to assist individuals in …

Doctor of Ministry Projects
Statement of the Task
In 1994, the central Africa nation of Rwanda experienced a large-scale genocide in which thousands of people were killed. Many Christians including Adventists participated in these mass killings. It is the task of this study to investigate (1) the historical causes of the genocide, (2) why Seventh-day Adventist Christians participated in the genocide, and (3) propose strategies for forgiveness and reconciliation from an Adventist perspective.
Methodology
The study is an historical and analytical investigation of the country and people of Rwanda from precolonial to post-independence time. It draws on the personal experience and direct interviews of …

La Iglesia Adventista Frente A La Disidencia En Colombia, Jose Evelio Garcia
Doctor of Ministry Projects
The Seventh-day Adventist Church in Colombia at this time is facing dissidence from the group Koinonia. This research was carried out in order to produce material to help pastors, ministerial students, and laypeople to understand and face this dissident movement. The Bible and the writings of Ellen G. White provide the principles on which the Seventh-day Adventist Church has been established. These principles have been applied in order to face the problem caused by the group Koinonia in Colombia.
In order to understand what Koinonia teaches and how it operates, a number of interviews were conducted with former Koinonia supporters, …

Concepto Rebautismal Del Adventismo En Venezuela, Edgar La Rosa Brito
Doctor of Ministry Projects
The frequency of rebaptism has been increasing within the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Venezuela. Some have considered rebaptism as a desirable alternative to reconsecration of active church members. This practice has generated concern among a number of pastors and lay people. Hence, this dissertation.
This dissertation includes a study of the New Testament theology of baptism and a sketch of the history of baptism and rebaptism throughout Christian history. Also studied were the writings of Ellen G. White and Adventist writers of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
The research was completed with personal interviews and surveys of pastors and lay …

The Bible presents several types of anointing, each with a different meaning. Kings were anointed when they were enthroned. Prophets and priests were anointed to indicate consecration and sanctification. Other kinds of anointing were for cosmetic or medicinal purposes. Finally, the anointing of the sick is mentioned. This dissertation deals with the practice of anointing, as recommended by the apostle James (Jas. 5:14), believers who were going through physical or spiritual affliction. Generations following the disciples of Jesus gave a very special meaning to anointing, associating it with prayer and miraculous cures (Mark 6:13).

A Historically And Culturally Contextualized Proposal For Health Evangelism In Latvia, Anna Galeniece
A Historically And Culturally Contextualized Proposal For Health Evangelism In Latvia, Anna Galeniece
Doctor of Ministry Projects
Problem
Seventh-day Adventist church leaders in Latvia have used several approaches and methods for reaching people with the gospel, but proclamation evangelism has served as the main program. However, this method has lost its effectiveness since the middle-1990s. Therefore, today the necessity of discovering and developing new ways and strategies has become crucial. One approach to reach the Latvian population could be health evangelism, which has achieved immense success in many parts of the world since the beginning of the Adventist health message in the 1860s.
Method
The research utilized pertinent materials from books, periodicals, and the Internet. The purpose …

Creación De Grupos Pequen̋Os Para Las Clases Media Y Alta De Santo Domingo, Carlos Reyes Javier
Doctor of Ministry Projects
Conventional small groups have not achieved the expected results in middle and high classes in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. The research showed that there is a great difference between the number of people baptized among the lower class and those of middle and high classes. The Holy Scriptures command Christians to evangelize all people without any discrimination. Because of the potential impact of small groups, it is important to use them in evangelizing both social classes.
The foundation for small groups is in the Scriptures. Besides, there are instructions in the writings of Ellen G. White about using small groups …

The biblical command is for all the followers of Jesus to go, make disciples. Nevertheless, a majority of church members does not participate in the fulfillment of this command. The purpose of this dissertation was to prepare a strategy to equip pastors and leaders in the different areas and departments of the church, so that they, in turn, may prepare and involve the whole church in this task. The biblical mandate to make disciples of all the nations is accompanied by instructions about how the task should be accomplished. Church growth has four biblical foundations. Salvation offered to all is …

Three questions guided the research: How has the Seventh-day Adventist Church grown in southern Mexico during the last sixteen years? What have been the factors that supported this growth? What elements could strengthen church growth in the Southern Union of Mexico? The average annual growth in the Southern Union, from 1985 to 1990, was 9.49 percent. From 1991 to 2000, the average growth was 4.05 percent. The average growth from 1985 to 2000 was 6.09 percent. Before attempting to identify factors that contributed to growth in the Southern Union, church growth was studied in the Bible, in the writings of …

Un Estudio Sobre La Vida Espiritual De Los Jóvenes Adventistas En Tabasco, México, Ervin A. Gonzalez Esteban
Doctor of Ministry Projects
The Bible gives great attention to youth. Important Bible characters acted under divine direction, leaving teachings regarding leadership and obedience. The biblical terms most used in reference to young people are na 'ar, a young man possessing strength and vigor, and neos, a person full of youth and inexperience. Paul advised Timothy: “Let no one despise thy youth” (1 Tim 4:12). John saw young people as being strong through the word of God and overcoming the wicked one (1 John 2:14). Research of young people shows that in today’s society, generations follow each other approximately every twenty years. Each one …

Seminario Para Preparar Líderes Laicos Para El Evangelismo Urbano En El Noreste De México, Isidro Lopez Yanez
Doctor of Ministry Projects
The Scriptures are clear about the order to evangelize every nation, tribe, language, and people. However, although the cities are part of these nations, the gospel has not been preached there as it has been in rural areas. This reality led to the study of urban evangelism and the preparation of a workshop for lay leaders in urban churches. The Bible presents several cases of urban evangelism, in both Testaments. In the Old Testament God showed his interest in the inhabitants of Niniveh, a pagan nation. In the New Testament, Paul evangelizes the important cities of the first century. Ellen …

The success or failure of small groups in a church is determined by the leadership of the groups. A good group begins with a good leader. The quality of a group depends on the qualifications of its leader. Because this fact has not been kept in mind in Mexico City, the small group program has been weak. The purpose of this dissertation was to remedy this situation by developing a program for recruitment, training, and motivation of small group leaders. Moses used the small group to minister to the people of Israel. To do so he carefully chose thousands of …

Estrategia Para Plantar Una Iglesia En Puebla, México, Moises Reyna Sanchez
Doctor of Ministry Projects
Church planting is one of the basic tasks to which God has called his disciples. The gospel commission of Matt 28:19, 20 implicitly calls for church planting. This dissertation presents biblical and theological foundations for church planting. In addition, it explores the writings of current authors, looking for appropriate church planting strategies. Success in church planting is achieved by applying certain strategies. These include having a clear vision of what God expects, completing a demographic study of the chosen location, pinpointing the place where the new congregation will begin, form the founding group and training them, having the first meetings, …

An Integration Of Quality Assurance And Existing Worship Components: A Model To Improve Worship In The Small Seventh-Day Adventist Church, Nelson Fernando De Oliveira
Doctor of Ministry Projects
Problem
Corporate worship is an experience that needs to be relevant to all. Small-church leaders face the challenge of transforming existing worship components into a more dynamic service, and increasing member involvement. Leaders at small churches have been known to express frustration trying to improve lives, and to worship in spirit and truth. Currently, there is little or no interface between the Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) components of the worship service (e.g., music, offering, preaching, and Scripture reading) and current discussions of quality assurance in relationship to a more vibrant corporate worship experience. There is a need to develop a model …

El Evangelismo De La Amistad Como Factor De Crecimiento En La Iglesia Adventista Del Séptimo Día, Tomas Torres De Dios
Doctor of Ministry Projects
The faithful fulfillment of the gospel commission demands the use of correct and appropriate methods to bring new members into the church. For this reason, the Seventh- day Adventist Church has used various evangelistic methods. The purpose of this dissertation was to make a theoretical study of friendship evangelism and prepare a workshop to train church members and local leaders. The Bible shows kindness as one of God’s attributes in dealing with human beings. Ever since Creation God has provided what human beings need to live in an environment of good relationships. One of the ways in which God showed …

Empowering And Equipping The Laity In The South Caribbean Conference Of Seventh-Day Adventists, Ray Henderson Walker
Doctor of Ministry Projects
Problem
Some pastors in the South Caribbean Conference of Seventh-day Adventists feel challenged by the ministry of the laity. One reason is the lack of a clear understanding of the biblical and theological perspectives on empowering and equipping the laity. Consequently, the potential of the laity is not fully utilized.
Method
Current literature was reviewed. This included books and articles on the principles, strategies, and programs which assist pastors to develop’ their empowering and equipping skills. A comparison was done between the ministry of the pastors and the laity in the South Caribbean Conference of Seventh-day Adventists. An evaluation of …

There is a need for an indigenous, contextualized evangelistic magazine designed specifically for the people of Zimbabwe. This dissertation looks at previous and current magazine enterprises in order to outline the implementation of a successful, self-supporting SDA magazine in Zimbabwe. The responsibilities of the editor-publisher, writers, and marketers are examined in relation to the target audience. Information on writer training is outlined in detail. Books and magazine articles on the topic of magazine publishing provided the primary source of information. Current and former magazine editors were also interviewed to provide a first-person look at the magazine industry. In order to …

Unless you've been frozen in carbonite or are hopelessly gullible, it must have occurred to you at some point during the last three decades that environmental activists are exaggerating just a bit when they claim that, unless we dramatically change our way of life, we'll soon see the end of civilization as we know it. I'm not sure when these doomsday predictions got started - probably they go back to Malthus and beyond - but I first became aware of environmental Jeremiadism in college in the early 1970s, when tout-le-monde were reading a little book called The Limits to Growth. …

Toward A Jurisprudence Of Cost-Benefit Analysis, Michael Abramowicz
Michigan Law Review
In 1989, Cass Sunstein published an article entitled On the Costs and Benefits of Aggressive Judicial Review of Agency Action. Sunstein apparently meant the words "costs" and "benefits" in an informal sense, as the article considered the advantages and disadvantages of aggressive judicial review without pretense of explicit quantification. That article was several generations ago in Sunstein scholarship, almost 100 articles and over a dozen books. The central concerns of that article, however, are relevant to an assessment of Sunstein's latest book, whose title, The Cost-Benefit State, uses the words "costs" and "benefits" as labels for quantitative assessments of the …

The Effect Of Solvents And Processing Conditions On The Solvent Extraction Of Coal., Manish R. Bhole
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Solvent extraction of two bituminous coals to produce low-ash extract material was studied using solvents dimethylformamide (DMF), dimethylacetamide (DMAC) and N-methylpyrrolidone (NMP). The extraction efficiency was seen to be NMP>DMAC>DMF for the reflux extraction at the normal boiling point of the solvent. While the reflux-extraction of raw coal gave less than 40% yield, NMP-extraction at 3500C and elevated pressure gave higher yield (~68%). Hydrogenated coal gave very high extraction yield (>70%) even at room temperature. The performance of DMAC was comparable to that of NMP for the extraction of hydrogenated coal. The reflux extraction showed mass balance …
