Speech Perception And Lexical Effects In Specific Language Impairment: The Effects Of Vowel Duration And Word Knowledge On Perception Of Final Alveolar Stop Voicing, Frances L.V. Scheffler

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The perception of temporal speech cues, lexical knowledge, and their interactions were examined in children (6;0-9;6) with specific language impairment (SLI). An identification task was used to test four 12-step speech continua: word-word (FEET—FEED), nonword-nonword (ZEST—ZEED), word-nonword (CHEAT—CHEED) and nonword-word (REAT—READ). The stimuli were naturally recorded and digitally edited. The vowel steady state, which varied in duration from 110 to 350 milliseconds in 20-millisecond steps, was the acoustic cue to the voicing characteristic of the final consonant in each stimulus. The analyses revealed that both the TLD and SLI groups used vowel duration as a perceptual cue. For the word-word …

Achieving Equality, Balance, And Democracy: Racial Redistricting Throughout The Civil Rights Era To The Present, Michael Nelson Bailey Jan 2002

Achieving Equality, Balance, And Democracy: Racial Redistricting Throughout The Civil Rights Era To The Present, Michael Nelson Bailey

Honors Theses

Redistricting is inherently invidious and when coupled with racial considerations, the stakes become much higher. Legislative representation is at the core of the governmental process in the United States. Any changes to this process affect every citizen and their influence in our government and electoral system. This paper approaches this topic from a philosophical standpoint, evaluating the theories and ideas of the Constitution, the Supreme Court, and constitutional scholars. The issue is so complex and divisive that a full understanding of the controlling forces at work is a difficult concept to grasp. In this research the Voting Rights Act and …

"Collaborative Support For The School Of Education: A Joint Instructional Technology And Library Needs Assessment Program.", Terry Taylor, H Bryan, Mickey Ann Hinojosa

Staff Publications - University Libraries

DePaul's School of Education was the first implementation of a Needs Assessment designed jointly by the university's Instructional Technology Development (ITD) area and the University Libraries. The goals for the Needs Assessment were to identify areas in which an expanded, unified and comprehensive faculty development training and support package would both address faculty's perceived needs while also improving adoption of existing instructional technologies and/or services. The Library's education bibliographer and the ITD consultant for education interviewed faculty representing a cross section of departments and programs as well as technological expertise. The results were analyzed; issues were sorted according to faculty …

The Impact Of The Transition From Analog To Digital Process Display Gauges On Human Error And Safety In The Chemical Industry, Allen J. Thacker

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The use of new technological instruments in the work place has enabled operators to control processes and product development to tolerances that were unachievable in past decades. The chemical industry has exhibited rapid growth in the implementation of control monitoring instruments such as analog and digital display gauges as well as the software applications that provide the flexibility to successfully integrate the technology into the chemical manufacturing processes. This research was designed to examine the effects of the transition from analog displays to digital displays in the chemical industry. The results of the research provide benefits to chemical manufacturers and …

The Effectiveness Of Hypermedia In West Virginia History: A Study Of The Application Of The Hypercard Program, "The Battle Of Philippi"., Timothy Allen Hart

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This study examined the impact of a hypermedia instructional module, a multi-unit HyperCard stack program entitled The Battle of Philippi , on student test performance in West Virginia History. Three instructional methods were implemented: traditional teacher presentation, student self-paced engagement with the computer-based module, and a hybrid instructional method using traditional instruction supplemented with the computer-based program. Students in the hybrid treatment showed the greatest increase in test performance. The self-paced students showed the next greatest increase. Students in the traditional group showed the least increase. Computer anxiety was not a significant predictor of student test performance in West Virginia …
