Broad Are Nebraska's Rolling Plains: The Early Writings Of George Bird Grinnell, Richard Vaughan

Articles by Maurer Faculty

Profiles the life of writer George Bird Grinnell (1849-1938) and the influence his first trip to Nebraska had in shaping his early writings about the American West. Among the works he published were several groundbreaking books about the Plains Indians of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Not only did this 1870 trip to Nebraska, as a member of O. C. Marsh’s first Yale Paleontological Expedition, influence Grinnell's scholarly endeavors, but his deep interest in the state also influenced his lifelong devotion to environmental preservation and established him as an important advocate for the protection and welfare of Native …

Biodiversity Hotspots : Threats And Conservation Efforts, Edyta Dowksza Jan 2002

Biodiversity Hotspots : Threats And Conservation Efforts, Edyta Dowksza

USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)

Biodiversity is a fairly new word. It is a combination of the words: biological and diversity. "The contracted form 'biodiversity' was apparently coined by Walter G. Rosen in 1985 for the first planning meeting of the 'National Forum on Biodiversity' held in Washington DC in September 1986, the proceedings of which brought the notion of biodiversity to the attention of a wide field of scientists and others (Heywood, 1995).

An Initial Evaluation Of Design-Build Highway Projects Performed By The Indiana Department Of Transportation, Nicholas Tymvios, Bob G. Mccullouch, Kumares C. Sinha Jan 2002

An Initial Evaluation Of Design-Build Highway Projects Performed By The Indiana Department Of Transportation, Nicholas Tymvios, Bob G. Mccullouch, Kumares C. Sinha

JTRP Technical Reports

Design-Build has been an effective contracting method in the private and public arenas. Departments of Transportation have used this contracting method on various projects for a variety of reasons. The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) has used this contract delivery method on a few projects with mixed responses from those involved in the process. INDOT therefore felt that an evaluation of the Design-Build program was appropriate to determine its future use in Indiana. This report gives a historical perspective of Design-Build and how the program has been received and perceived by INDOT; describes the project’s survey and the data collected …

Moods And Motives: A Comparison Of Catullus And Ovid In The Story Of Ariadne And Theseus, Tara Bonds Jan 2002

Moods And Motives: A Comparison Of Catullus And Ovid In The Story Of Ariadne And Theseus, Tara Bonds

USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)

The thesis begins with a retelling of the Ariadne and Theseus myth. Once the basic storyline has been explained, a brief historical survey of the political and social environment ofCatullus and Ovid follows, for the changes in Rome and the historical context in which each wrote must be taken into consideration. Next, Catullus and Ovid's presentations will be analyzed within the literary context each writer provides. Catullus wrote his version within a wedding hymn, among stories of other lovers; Ovid's version of the myth is placed within his Heroides, a collection of fictional letters written by mythological female characters. The …

Development Of A Portable Video Detection System For Counting Turning Vehicles At Intersections, Andrzej P. Tarko, Robert Scott Lyles Jan 2002

Development Of A Portable Video Detection System For Counting Turning Vehicles At Intersections, Andrzej P. Tarko, Robert Scott Lyles

JTRP Technical Reports

This research was conducted to test the feasibility of using existing video-detection techniques for counting turning volumes with a portable installation. This was accomplished by integrating a forty-five foot mechanical tower mounted on a van with two video detection systems, Autoscope and VideoTrak. The research project has produced results in three categories: prototype methods of counting turning volumes, evaluation results, and general specifications of a portable video-based system for counting vehicles at intersections. The method based on spot detection uses redundancy of data (more spots than movements) to improve the results quality. The method for VideoTrak one-dimensional tracking classifies maneuvers …

Armenians Of Tampa Bay : A Long Way Home, Anna Nefedova Jan 2002

Armenians Of Tampa Bay : A Long Way Home, Anna Nefedova

USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)

Genocide would probably account for more than a half of all the historical research and literature endeavors that have something to do with the Armenian nation. The events of 1915, when the Turks attempted to eradicate the whole nation, and the preceding massacres of the late 19 century give food for reflection enough for many centuries to come. The accounts of the survivors are filled with terror and dismay; there have not been many events in the history of the past century as appalling or as huge in scale and consequences as the genocide of the Armenian nation.

Differences Between Undergraduate And Graduate Students In Self-Concept And Depression, Ann L. Woolley Jan 2002

Differences Between Undergraduate And Graduate Students In Self-Concept And Depression, Ann L. Woolley

Dissertations

Problem.

Students have an opportunity for personal growth as they learn about themselves and the world around them. However, their levels of self-concept and depression can influence how they view' themselves, their relationships, and their world. This research compared undergraduate and graduate students with respect to their levels of self-concept and depression.

Method

A quantitative research design was used for an ex post facto study of 239 students from Andrews University and Western Michigan University. They completed the Demographic Questionnaire, the Tennessee Self-Concept Scale: Second Edition (TSCS:2), and the Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II).

The Effects Of Divorce On Children's Well Being: A Study Of Preadolescents And Adolescents, Amanda Wagner Jan 2002

The Effects Of Divorce On Children's Well Being: A Study Of Preadolescents And Adolescents, Amanda Wagner

USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)

Some time ago, I remember reading that every person knows at least one other person who is divorced. When I thought about how many of my friends parents are still together, I could come up with only three. It makes you wonder if maybe to keep up with the changing times and the increase in divorce, the above statement should be worded, "every person knows at least one other person who is still married".

Evaluation Of Selected Video Detection Systems At Signalized Intersections, Jeromy L. Grenard, Darcy M. Bullock, Andrzej P. Tarko Jan 2002

Evaluation Of Selected Video Detection Systems At Signalized Intersections, Jeromy L. Grenard, Darcy M. Bullock, Andrzej P. Tarko

JTRP Technical Reports

Video detection technologies have been emerging in recent years as a viable alternative to inductive loop detectors to actuate intersection signal controllers. There is a need for quantitative evaluation procedures for documenting the performance of video detection technologies. This quantitative data is needed to qualify systems for procurement and provide benchmarks for training traffic signal technicians that deploy and maintain these systems. This research makes use of two new evaluation procedures for video detection, with several measures of performance. The first of these evaluation procedures involves the comparison of the occupancy times of inductive loop detectors and video detectors to …

Sex In Advertising, Christina L. Servedio Jan 2002

Sex In Advertising, Christina L. Servedio

USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)

Advertisements sell a great deal more than products. They sell values, images, and concepts of success and worth, love and sexuality, popularity, and normalcy. They tell us who we are and who we should be. This paper is intended to raise the issues of how advertising uses sex appeal to sell a product or service and at what cost to society.

Noise Control And Speech Intelligibility Improvement Of A Toll Plaza, Luc Mongeau, Robert J. Bernhard, Jeffery P. Feist Jan 2002

Noise Control And Speech Intelligibility Improvement Of A Toll Plaza, Luc Mongeau, Robert J. Bernhard, Jeffery P. Feist

JTRP Technical Reports

Vehicular toll roads are one component of many municipal transportation systems. Open communication windows, often used in tollbooths, facilitate essential communication and monetary transactions. However, the vehicle noise generated outside the booth is easily transmitted into the booth via the open window. Personnel working at toll collection plazas are exposed to extended, continuous traffic noise. Sustained noise levels of this nature may cause hearing loss, induce fatigue or stress, and reduce worker productivity. The annoyance and discomfort related to continuous noise exposure may create an unpleasant working condition and may affect the hospitality of the tollbooth operators and their attitude …

Performance-Related Specifications For Concrete Bridge Superstructures, Volume 1: Performance Parameters And Related Procedure For Concrete Bridge Superstructures, J. A. Ramirez, Jhon Paul Smith

JTRP Technical Reports

In Volume 1 of the final report, the identification of performance levels and parameters, and the development of acceptance criteria, have been addressed. Emphasis has been placed on the development of a methodology for a Performance Related Specification, PRS, for concrete bridge superstructures. The implementation of the methodology, presented in the form of a user-friendly computer program, is project specific. It requires the mean and standard deviation (or definition of a probability distribution) of the input parameters for the performance predictive models. This is done for both the as-designed condition and the as-built condition of the structure. The contractor is …
