The Role Of Diet And Physical Activity For Ovarian Cancer Results From The Adventist Health Study, Fatemeh Kiani Jan 2002

The Role Of Diet And Physical Activity For Ovarian Cancer Results From The Adventist Health Study, Fatemeh Kiani

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

A few aspects of the epidemiology of ovarian cancer are well understood, such as the inverse relationship with parity and oral contraceptive (OC) use. The role of other factors such as the potential influence of diet or physical activity is far from being established. A few studies, however, have been able to identify dietary risk factors for ovarian cancer. In this dissertation, I have conducted two studies that investigate the relationship between dietary factors and physical activity and the three endpoints: 1) nonfatal ovarian cancer (1976-1982; time to diagnosis), 2) fatal ovarian cancer (1976-1988; time to death), and 3) total …

Fish Landmarks For Chromosome 11 Of Bombyx Mori: An In Situ Analysis, Charles Eugene Mcgovern Jan 2002

Fish Landmarks For Chromosome 11 Of Bombyx Mori: An In Situ Analysis, Charles Eugene Mcgovern

Open Access Dissertations

Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) has been used to simultaneously identify the positions of the ribosomal DNA and the Sericin genes on chromosome 11 of Bombyx mori. The ribosomal DNA genes were detected using biotin labeled plasmid pBmR 161 and avidin-Texas Red and the Sericin 2 gene was detected using digoxigenin labeled plasmid 2002 and anti-digoxigenin-fluorescein. The position of the Sericin 1 gene was identified using the ribosomal DNA genes as a chromosomal landmark. Sericin 1 was detected using digoxigenin labeled bacterial artificial chromosome 9HJD and anti-digoxigenin-fluorescein. The chromosomal spreads were counterstained with diamindino-phenyl-indole (DAPI). The signals from the sericin …

Efficient Fpga Realizations Based On And/Xor Expressions, Seok-Bum Ko Jan 2002

Efficient Fpga Realizations Based On And/Xor Expressions, Seok-Bum Ko

Open Access Dissertations

In this dissertation, we propose an AND/XOR-based technology mapping method for field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs). Due to the fixed size of the programmable blocks in an FPGA, decomposing a circuit into sub-circuits with appropriate number of inputs can achieve excellent implementation efficiency. Specifically, the proposed technology mapping method is based on Davio expansion theorem to decompose a given Boolean circuit. The AND/XOR nature of the proposed method allows it to operate on XOR intensive circuits, such as error detecting/correcting, data encryption/decryption, and arithmetic circuits, efficiently. We design three different approaches: (1) Direct Approach, (2) AND/XOR Direct, and (3) Proposed …

Market Information And Fisheries Management: Improving Efficiency In Private Property Right Management Systems, Eyjolfur Gudmundsson Jan 2002

Market Information And Fisheries Management: Improving Efficiency In Private Property Right Management Systems, Eyjolfur Gudmundsson

Open Access Dissertations

Fisheries economics concentrates on solving the problem of economic overexploitation in fisheries. The field took its first steps, as a specialized study area within economics, in the early 1950s. The approach since then, for solving the problem of overexploitation, has mostly been one of neo-classical economics, with emphasis on the production side of the problem. A potential solution to the overexploitation problem is the privatization of fisheries in order to maximize long-term economic benefits. Recent studies have shown that prices and certain product characteristics are an important factor for determining the optimal management of fisheries. This study tries to establish …

Papers In Spatial Analysis Of Regional Economic Growth, Andrada Ioana Pacheco Jan 2002

Papers In Spatial Analysis Of Regional Economic Growth, Andrada Ioana Pacheco

Open Access Dissertations

States, regions and communities are concerned with economic development, as well as population growth and the quality of life. The economic expansion in the last two decades created new standards of living, but also new concerns on the effects that development has on the environment. A scattered version of regional growth with carelessly spreading pattern of suburban development is recognized as "sprawl" and carries with it the notions of inefficient use of irreplaceable natural resources and redundant public facilities and infrastructure. This dissertation investigates spatial economic relationships and analyzes the spatial regional growth process in Southern New England in the …

The Strange Attraction Of Blake's Urizen, Kelly Kelleway Jan 2002

The Strange Attraction Of Blake's Urizen, Kelly Kelleway

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

Without Contraries is no Progression. With this simple statement in The Marriage of Heaven and Hell, William Blake posited, in 1790, a process -- a Hegelian dialectic of sorts, if you will -- that has underscored much of his poetry and has revealed itself in his etchings and engravings. But what, exactly, this Blakean hypothesis means is open to debate. One way to explicate this notion is to look at it in terms of a process of reunification or recursion wherein one falls from the Blakean space of Innocence (or is dragged kicking and screaming) to the rather …

Framing Intelligibility, Identity And Selfhood: A Reconsideration Of Spatio-Temporal Models, Sally Munt Jan 2002

Framing Intelligibility, Identity And Selfhood: A Reconsideration Of Spatio-Temporal Models, Sally Munt

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

The relationship between intelligibility and identity over the past thirty years has largely been approached through the linguistic construct of the subject. Proposing that our subjectivities be theoretically comprehended (made intelligible) as discursive effects is now common sense. Poststructuralism, following particularly Michel Foucault, Jacques Derrida and Jacques Lacan, has ensured that the subject is a cardinal category of contemporary thought; in any number of disciplines, it is one of the first concepts we teach to our undergraduates. But are we best served by continuing to insist on the intellectual primacy of the subject, formulated as it has been …

The Face Of Human Trafficking, Aiko Joshi Jan 2002

The Face Of Human Trafficking, Aiko Joshi

UC Law SF Journal on Gender and Justice

Human trafficking has become a fast-growing global criminal activity, affecting just about every country in the world. Each year, at least four million people are trafficked worldwide, with an annual profit of up to seven billion dollars for the trafficking network. Trafficking victims often believe they are accepting jobs in different sectors, but are often taken across borders, sometimes through coercive 31 methods, where they can often end up in exploitative situations. However, not all those who leave their home countries are necessarily trafficking victims. Trafficking and migration are not the same. It is only when a person voluntarily migrates, …

The Use Of New Communications And Information Technologies For Sexual Exploitation Of Women And Children, Donna M. Hughes Jan 2002

The Use Of New Communications And Information Technologies For Sexual Exploitation Of Women And Children, Donna M. Hughes

UC Law SF Journal on Gender and Justice

The sexual exploitation of women and children is a global human rights crisis. New communications and information technologies facilitate the sexual exploitation of women and girls locally, nationally and transnationally. Using new technologies, sexual predators and pimps stalk women and children. New technical innovations facilitate the sexual exploitation of women and children because they enable people to easily buy, sell and exchange millions of images and videos of sexual exploitation of women and children. Advances in communications and information technologies have created a global revolution in communications, access to information, and media delivery. This technology enables sexual predators to harm …

Mixed Signals: The Limited Role Of Comparative Analysis In Constitutional Adjudication Jan 2002

Mixed Signals: The Limited Role Of Comparative Analysis In Constitutional Adjudication

San Diego Law Review

Judges and academics are divided as to whether the resolution of constitutional disputes must turn wholly on domestic inputs or if there is in fact any room in United States constitutional jurisprudence to learn from the experiences of other nations. Objections to the practice

premised upon the assertions that constitutional solutions should derive from purely domestic sources and that fundamental differences in constitutional systems will render attempts to transplant solutions ineffective. The purpose of this discussion is to show (1) that courts do in fact use comparative analysis in the interpretation of the Constitution, (2) that courts use foreign materials …

The Legislative Response To The Evolution Of Computer Viruses, Mark R. Colombell Jan 2002

The Legislative Response To The Evolution Of Computer Viruses, Mark R. Colombell

Richmond Journal of Law & Technology

On July 19, 2001, and again on July 31, 2001, the United States Government was attacked by a worm. The Code Red worm, a malevolent computer program, spread across the Internet impacting thousands of computers globally. The initial target of the Code Red worm was the White House website. Just days after the terrorist attacks in New York, Washington D.C., and Pennsylvania on September 11, the Nimda virus was unleashed on the Internet. By consuming up to ten percent of the Internet's capacity, Nimda quickly received the distinction as the worst computer infestation to date.

Nationalism And The Public Sphere : Debating The Limits Of Patriotism In Popular Music Since September 11th, Mark Melvin

Honors Theses

At various historical moments, music has been a part of change and movement within social dynamics. From minstrels entertaining the courts of kings to plantation slaves singing spirituals of emancipation, the localities of music are diverse and ever shifting. Music is, and always has been, forming and reforming dynamic relationships with culture, art, and politics. With the emergence of mass media and mass distribution in the 20th century, music has become more than an art form that can only be experienced by a live audience; consequently, music has formed even more unique relationships within the cultural, artistic and political spheres. …

Complement Resistance In Agrobacterium Tumefaciens Isolates, Michael E. Mccormick Jan 2002

Complement Resistance In Agrobacterium Tumefaciens Isolates, Michael E. Mccormick

Honors Theses

The word "pathogen" ofen brings to mind morose images and other words such as "illness," "malaria," and "outbreak": words associated with animal pathogens, in particular, the ones that make us humans sick. However, some pathogens also affect another major kingdom, plants, and one of the more devastating pathogens to the plant kingdom is the bacteria Agrobacterium tumefaciens. This organism has a Type IV Secretion System that allows it to transfer a piece of t-DNA into the host cell; this DNA integrates into the eukaryotic genome and establishes in ction by utilizing the host's transcription machinery. This unique and effective means …

Indigenous Peoples, American Federalism, And The Supreme Court, David E. Wilkins Jan 2002

Indigenous Peoples, American Federalism, And The Supreme Court, David E. Wilkins

Jepson School of Leadership Studies articles, book chapters and other publications

As America breathes a sigh of relief in the afterglow of the pyrotechnics associated with the first post-September 11 July 4, pondering its global status as as the leading agent in its self-proclaimed "War on Terrorism," and its domestic situation with a "War on Federalism" raging between the Supreme Court's redefined notion of states' rights and federal authority, it seems a propitious time to ask where indigenous nations fit in this warlike atmosphere, given that the history of Indian/U.S. relations involved a fair amount of war-related activities.

Renewable Energy Sources For Development, Richard L. Ottinger Jan 2002

Renewable Energy Sources For Development, Richard L. Ottinger

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

Renewable energy resources hold great promise for meeting the energy and development needs of countries throughout the world. This promise is particularly strong for developing countries where many regions have not yet committed to fossil fuel dominance. Solar photovoltaic and solar thermal technologies are particularly advantageous for serving the two billion people in rural areas without grid electricity. Modern biomass energy is attractive because it uses locally available agricultural wastes. Wind energy and small hydroelectric resources also are mature technologies well suited to developing countries. Such renewable resources are far more economical than traditional energy resources, especially where the costs …

Dean's Foreword, David S. Cohen Jan 2002

Dean's Foreword, David S. Cohen

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

This issue of the Pace Environmental Law Review contains a description of this emerging field of law and the response of the academic and legal community to it. As Professor Nolon reports in his introduction, we found eloquent coherence in these laws and saw how they fit together to form a comprehensive whole. We examined state statutes that authorized local governments to adopt environmental laws and discovered that they were diverse in nature but prevalent in many states. We also found state court decisions that upheld local environmental laws against the challenges of regulated property owners. We were troubled by …
