Holism, Hermeneutics, And Heterophenomenology: A Critique Of Daniel Dennett's Intentional Stance, George Fletcher Jan 2002

Holism, Hermeneutics, And Heterophenomenology: A Critique Of Daniel Dennett's Intentional Stance, George Fletcher

All Volumes (2001-2008)

Heterophenomenology downplays the reality of the internal experiential aspects of consciousness in deference to an intentional, language-based model of consciousness that places emphasis on the neutral acceptance of the speech reports of subjects as the basis for understanding consciousness – thus placing the foundations of consciousness in a physical, monistic (physical sans soul), computational device (the brain). I shall argue that this methodology can be seen as a form of empathic extrapolation of self-understanding onto the other in dialogue, akin to the work of early hermeneutics. 11 This methodology is closely tied in with a contemporary connectionist conception of computability …

Think Globally And Act Locally: Local Implementation Of Japan's Internationalization Policy, Anita Y.K. Davis Jan 2002

Think Globally And Act Locally: Local Implementation Of Japan's Internationalization Policy, Anita Y.K. Davis

All Volumes (2001-2008)

In the late 1980s, the Japanese national government proposed a plan to "internationalize" the country – to increase international understanding. This national proposal resulted from the pressures of globalization as well as a mixture of domestic political and economic factors. Through this broad proposal, Japan sought to decentralize and encourage local levels of government to create individual policies for globalizing their communities. It proposed internationalizing business and education, exposing the Japanese people to outside cultures, exposing foreigners to Japan's culture, and increasing the Japanese people's familiarity with English. While the national government provided general suggestions for internationalization (kokusaika), its intent …

There's Got To Be A Better Way: Retribution Vs. Restoration, Jenna Lopes Jan 2002

There's Got To Be A Better Way: Retribution Vs. Restoration, Jenna Lopes

All Volumes (2001-2008)

By examining the historical treatment of punishment and the results of those practices, we can more accurately diagnose the problems and prescribe the proper remedies. It is time that we focus on healing instead of simply treating the symptoms with catastrophic intervention. As with medicine, if a problem is detected and treated early the probability of recovery and a healthy life are much higher than beginning treatment after the body has become critically ill. I propose a holistic approach to the problem of crime and punishment and here, specifically, focus on the alternative to current correctional practices. The practice of …

Magnetic Measurements On Ga1-Xmnxs In High Fields Using The Cantilever Technique, Carl W. Maymi Jan 2002

Magnetic Measurements On Ga1-Xmnxs In High Fields Using The Cantilever Technique, Carl W. Maymi

All Volumes (2001-2008)

High field magnetic measurements have been taken on the III-VI Diluted Magnetic Semiconductor Ga1-xMnxS at the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory. This paper discusses the calibration of magnetic measurements made using the cantilever technique. It has been discovered that efficiency of cantilevers may decline over time, signaled by the onset of an oscillatory effect in the cantilever data.

Development Of The Continuously Variable Volume Reactor For Flow Injection Analysisdesign, Capabilities And Testing, Linda L. Lipe, Suzanne M. Purinton, Elizabeth Mederios, C Chad Harrell, Cynthia Efta, Melissa Murray, Meredith Wood, Ray-Bernard Portier, Stuart J. Chalk Jan 2002

Development Of The Continuously Variable Volume Reactor For Flow Injection Analysisdesign, Capabilities And Testing, Linda L. Lipe, Suzanne M. Purinton, Elizabeth Mederios, C Chad Harrell, Cynthia Efta, Melissa Murray, Meredith Wood, Ray-Bernard Portier, Stuart J. Chalk

All Volumes (2001-2008)

A new apparatus for mixing sample and reagent in flow injection analysis is described. The continuously variable volume reactor (CVVR) replaces the conventional mixing coil in a flow injection manifold to provide mixing and dilution. A linear actuator motor allows control of the chamber volume via Lab VIEW software. The chamber volume can be incremented in steps of 1 uL over the range 68-1704 uL. In addition, the chamber has an integral variable-speed stirring unit that is also under computer control. Experiments were performed to evaluate the dispersion characteristics of this new device, evaluate the volume reproducibility, and understand the …

Molecular Investigation Of Genetic Variability Among Borrelia Infecting Ticks In Florida Using Base Exision Sequence Scanning, Larry W. Martin Jan 2002

Molecular Investigation Of Genetic Variability Among Borrelia Infecting Ticks In Florida Using Base Exision Sequence Scanning, Larry W. Martin

All Volumes (2001-2008)

Lyme disease (LD), the most commonly reported arthropod-associated illness in the U.S., is a multi-system tick-borne illness caused by the spirochete Borrelia burgdorferi. In the eastern U.S. the agent is transmitted by the blacklegged tick, Ixodes scapuiaris, and primarily maintained in nature by rodent reservoirs. Although the majority of human cases has been concentrated in the northeastern U.S., hundreds have also been reported in southern states. Some of these cases represent exposures that occurred elsewhere in the country. However, many were from endemic exposures, from which numerous indigenous cases have been confirmed in the Southeast. Putative B. burgdorferi …

The Twilight Of Organizational Form For Charity: Musings On Norman Silber, A Corporate Form Of Freedom: The Emergence Of The Modern Nonprofit Sector, Evelyn Brody Jan 2002

The Twilight Of Organizational Form For Charity: Musings On Norman Silber, A Corporate Form Of Freedom: The Emergence Of The Modern Nonprofit Sector, Evelyn Brody

Hofstra Law Review

Norman Silber's exploration of a near-century of jurisprudential subjectivity reveals an extraordinary hunger for uniformity in the conception of the public good. In 1961, the New York Court of Appeals effectively ended the practice of substantive judicial review of nonprofit charters when it ordered the lower court to approve the articles of a white supremacist group. In the end, judicial discretion over charity incorporation fell during the general social rebellion against orthodoxy, the rise of advocacy and identity groups (notably the NAACP), the legal-process reform against ad-hoc judicial rulings in favor of administrative deliberation and consistency, and the reconception of …
