Discrete Predictive Analysis In Probabilistic Safety Assessment, Paul Kvam, J. Glenn Miller Jan 2002

Discrete Predictive Analysis In Probabilistic Safety Assessment, Paul Kvam, J. Glenn Miller

Department of Math & Statistics Faculty Publications

This paper presents methods for predicting future numbers of component failures for probabilistic safety assessments (PSAs). The research is motivated and illustrated by discrete failure data from the nuclear industry, including failure counts for emergency diesel generators, pumps, and motor operated valves. Failure counts are modeled with Poisson and binomial distributions. Multiple-failure environments create extra problems for predictive inference, and are a primary focus of this paper. Common cause failures (CCFs), in particular, refer to the simultaneous failure of system components due to an external event. CCF prediction is investigated, and approximate inference methods are derived for various CCF models.

Common Cause Failure Prediction Using Data Mapping, Paul H. Kvam, J. Glenn Miller Jan 2002

Common Cause Failure Prediction Using Data Mapping, Paul H. Kvam, J. Glenn Miller

Department of Math & Statistics Faculty Publications

To estimate power plant reliability, a probabilistic safety assessment might combine failure data from various sites. Because dependent failures are a critical concern in the nuclear industry, combining failure data from component groups of different sizes is a challenging problem. One procedure, called data mapping, translates failure data across component group sizes. This includes common cause failures, which are simultaneous failure events of two or more components in a group. In this paper, we present methods for predicting future plant reliability using mapped common cause failure data. The prediction technique is motivated by discrete failure data from emergency diesel generators …

,,Wahr Spricht, Wer Scahtten Spricht": Die Angst Vor Der Unbestimmbarkeit In Der Darstellung Des Holocaust, Kathrin M. Bower

L'Enfance Échouée Comme Source De Drame Dans En Attendant Le Vote Des Bêtes Sauvages, Kasongo Mulenda Kapanga Jan 2002

L'Enfance Échouée Comme Source De Drame Dans En Attendant Le Vote Des Bêtes Sauvages, Kasongo Mulenda Kapanga

Languages, Literatures, and Cultures Faculty Publications

Justice For Perpetrators And Victims Of Apartheid Who Fall Outside The Scope Of The Truth And Reconciliation Commission’S Mandate, Christopher J. Roederer, Kevin Hopkins Jan 2002

Justice For Perpetrators And Victims Of Apartheid Who Fall Outside The Scope Of The Truth And Reconciliation Commission’S Mandate, Christopher J. Roederer, Kevin Hopkins

School of Law Faculty Publications

The legislation that gave birth to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission provides for the possibility of amnesty to the perpetrators of certain crimes and delicts. It also provides for the possibility of reparations to the victims of apartheid who suffered as a result of their human rights being grossly violated. The problem with the legislation is that it is only competent to deal with matters falling within its ambit, but there are numerous issues that still need to be addressed which clearly fall outside of it. One might be tempted to say that such issues falling beyond the scope of …

Race Relations, Suzanne W. Jones Jan 2002

Race Relations, Suzanne W. Jones

English Faculty Publications

Since the early nineteenth century, when white southern writers began to defend slavery, relationships between blacks and whites became a central concern in southern literature. Many nineteenth-and early-twentieth-century works by white writers exacerbated racial prejudice by reproducing southern white society's racist ideology. But other southern writers, both white and black, have attempted to redress this problem by using literature to dismantle stereotypes and to imagine new relationships. The results of the 1960s Civil Rights Movement speeded up the process, suggesting new plots, new endings, and new points of view to southern writers of both races.

I'Ll Take My Land: Contemporary Southern Agrarians, Suzanne W. Jones Jan 2002

I'Ll Take My Land: Contemporary Southern Agrarians, Suzanne W. Jones

English Faculty Publications

For many earlier southern white writers, the southern rural landscape was the repository of nostalgia for lost ways of life, whether it was the plantation fantasy that Thomas Nelson Page pined for in his stories In Ole Virginia (1887) or the segregated agrarian ideal that many contributors yearned for in I'll Take My Stand (1930). For modern southern white writers, beginning most prominently with William Faulkner, the rural landscape has conjured up unsettling guile about a way of life that flourished on the backs of the black people who tilled that land. And not surprisingly, for many black writers the …

Screening Readerly Pleasures: Modernism, Melodrama, And Mass Markets In If I Forget Thee, Jerusalem, Peter Lurie Jan 2002

Screening Readerly Pleasures: Modernism, Melodrama, And Mass Markets In If I Forget Thee, Jerusalem, Peter Lurie

English Faculty Publications

Although Faulkner had already, with his earlier fiction, established himself as a practitioner of a rarefied, regional modernism, in If I Forget Thee, Jerusalem he addresses the reading tastes and pleasures of the commercial market. Commenting as he does on the doctor and his wife’s tastes in the novel’s opening, Faulkner reveals his disdain for people who prefer the culture industry’s generic products to something more personal or idiosyncratic. Yet as his potential audience, those people or their tastes were of interest to Faulkner in 1939, the year the novel appeared. Following extended periods working in Hollywood, as well as …

Passing As Danzy Senna, Bertram D. Ashe, Danzy Senna Jan 2002

Passing As Danzy Senna, Bertram D. Ashe, Danzy Senna

English Faculty Publications

Caucasia, written by Danzy Senna, is part of a growing sub-genre of African-American novels, some of which announce their themes by their titles: White Boys, by Reginald McKnight; The White Boy Shuffle, by Paul Beatty; The Last Integrationist, by Jake Lamar; and Negrophobia, by Darius James, to name a few. Caucasia is a "Post-Soul" novel that explores the world of "mullatos" - both cultural and racial. But even though artists such as Kara Walker, photographer Lorna Simpson, and essayist Lisa Jones also explore the vicissitudes of post-Civil Rights Movement Black identity, in Black fiction its …

Book Review: The Mormon Question: Polygamy And Constitutional Conflict In Nineteenth-Century America, Terryl Givens Jan 2002

Book Review: The Mormon Question: Polygamy And Constitutional Conflict In Nineteenth-Century America, Terryl Givens

English Faculty Publications

Polygamy makes for fascinating social history and for best-selling potboilers as well. This study by Sarah Barringer Gordon, who teaches both law and history at the University of Pennsylvania, is the first attempt to write a full-length legal history of “the Principle.” It turns out that even in this dry-as-dust genre, polygamy fuels a very dynamic story indeed, one that reveals the rich malleability of the Constitution, the endless resourcefulness of determined guardians of public morality, and the resilience of a peculiar people committed to the practice of plural marriage.

Effect Of The Zn Concentration On The Characteristic Parameters Of Zn_{X}Cd_{1 - X}S Thin Films Developed By Spraying Pyrolysis Method Under The Nitrogen Atmosphere, Meti̇n Bedi̇r, Refi̇k Kayali, Mustafa Öztaş

Turkish Journal of Physics

The electronic and optical properties of Zn_{x}Cd _{(1- x)}S thin films (0.0 \le x \le 0.7) fabricated using the chemical spray method have been investigated in nitrogen atmosphere. The films are deposited on glass substrates at 420^oC substrate temperature. The related optical data are recorded in the wavelength range 200-700 nm. In addition, the absorption coefficient is determined and correlated with the photon energy in order to estimate the direct transition energy bandgap. The crystallite size and degree of preferential orientation were found to decrease with the increase of x and to improve upon annealing in vacuum at \cong 600^oC. …

Russia’S Position Toward Ottoman Orthodox Christians: An 1816 Instruction From The Foreign Ministry, Theophilus C. Prousis Jan 2002

Russia’S Position Toward Ottoman Orthodox Christians: An 1816 Instruction From The Foreign Ministry, Theophilus C. Prousis

History Faculty Research and Scholarship

Documents on tsarist policy in the Near East offer suggestive detail, subtle nuance, and firsthand commentary on the proposed if not actual state of Russo-Ottoman affairs regarding specific issues between the two neighboring autocratic empires. These features, to varying degrees, are manifested in this translated directive of June 1816, from Foreign Minister Karl V. Nessel'rode to envoy Grigorii A. Stroganov in Istanbul, dealing with Russia's attitude toward the sultan's Eastern Orthodox subjects in the aftermath of the Congress of Vienna. The Foreign Ministry's instruction merits attention by scholars of lmperial Russia's involvement in the Eastern Question as a reminder that …
