Two New Pangrammic Challenges, Mark Isaak Nov 2002

Two New Pangrammic Challenges, Mark Isaak

Word Ways

The alphabet has 26 letters, but writing uses more than 26 symbols. If I want to display all the elements of a typeface, for example, "the quick brown fox..." does not suffice. My first challenge is to create a pangram which, following accepted conventions of capitalization, displays all 26 letters in both upper and lower case.

One + Twelve = Two + Eleven Nov 2002

One + Twelve = Two + Eleven

Word Ways

1. Eleven + two = twelve + one is an amazing and rightly famous anagram. I wish to add to its mystique by revealing some more deep coincidences, based on rearranging the terms to

2. two + eleven = one + twelve, or, as I prefer.

3. one + twelve = two + eleven (a word reversal of equation #1).

These two are also anagrams and palindromes in numerical form (shown for #3): 1+12=2+11. (The palindrome requires altered punctuation, as is conventional in verbal palindromes.) More surprisingly, they're both anagrams and palindromes in Roman numerals as well: I+XII=II+XI.

Shiftgrams Revisited, Darryl Francis Nov 2002

Shiftgrams Revisited, Darryl Francis

Word Ways

The concept of word-shifts was introduced in Dmitri Borgmann's Language on Vacation (1965). Consider the word COLD for instance. Shifting each of the letters three spaces forward in the alphabet, COLD becomes FROG: and shifting the letters of CHEER seven spaces forward produces JOLLY. Dmitri offered many other examples in his book.

Word Neighbours And Onalosis, Rex Gooch Nov 2002

Word Neighbours And Onalosis, Rex Gooch

Word Ways

This article is a partial update of my "Statistics of Word Neighbours" in the November 1997 Word Ways, and provides the facts laying behind the findings in the recent series (August 2000 through May 2001) of articles on word ladders. Two words are neighbours if they differ in a single letter. In this article, each such word is credited as having a neighbour, i.e. the link between them in counted twice (please refer to the earlier article for prior work and more information). The following table updates various parts of the article.

Building And Maintaining A Statewide Transportation Framework, Kenneth Dueker, Paul Bender Nov 2002

Building And Maintaining A Statewide Transportation Framework, Kenneth Dueker, Paul Bender

Center for Urban Studies Publications and Reports

Creating and maintaining up-to-date sharable Geographic Information SystemsTransportation (GIS-T) data is challenging. Many states are working on Transportation Framework efforts to build a complete, consistent, and current transportation data layer in conjunction with the NSDI and Geospatial One-Stop efforts. This paper summarizes an effort that systematically re-examined transportation data sharing issues as part of the development of a Transportation Framework for the State of Washington. Business needs were assessed in terms of spatial and temporal accuracy needs of stakeholders and users of a state-wide Transportation Framework. A conceptual model was developed for a Transportation Framework with emphasis on data flows …

Shadow Of Death: A Fantasy Theme Analysis Of The Floyd Collins Tragedy, Leslie Witty Nov 2002

Shadow Of Death: A Fantasy Theme Analysis Of The Floyd Collins Tragedy, Leslie Witty

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Floyd Collins, a Kentucky caver who suffered a lengthy entrapment and eventual death inside Sand Cave in 1925, has had his story told repeatedly and in numerous forms. Although the countless genres (and their historical accuracy) vary, they are basically retellings of the same story—a story filled with drama, suspense, and heroics. Because of these characteristics, the rhetoric of the Floyd Collins ordeal lent itself to examination using Bormann's (1972) fantasy theme method. By using a fantasy theme analysis to explore the saga, I advanced beyond the retellings and gained a greater understanding of why seventy-seven years after he died …

Judicial Activism Is Not The Solution To The Attorney's Fee Problem, Brant J. Hellwig Nov 2002

Judicial Activism Is Not The Solution To The Attorney's Fee Problem, Brant J. Hellwig

Scholarly Articles

The report responds to criticism of the Tax Court's decision in Biehl v. Commissioner, in which the court determined that contingency fees paid to the taxpayer's attorney in employment litigation did not constitute an above-the-line deduction under section 62(a)(2)(A). The report examines the relevant statutes, regulations, and legislative history and concludes that the Tax Court reached the correct decision. Professor Hellwig further contends that had the Tax Court interpreted section 62(a)(2)(A) to grant above-the-line status to the attorney's fees in this case to avoid the disallowance of the miscelleaneous itemized deduction for attorney's fees under the alternative minimum tax, the …

Habitat Structure And Alarm Call Dialects In Gunnison's Prairie Dog (Cynomys Gunnisoni), Bianca S. Perla, C. N. Slobodchikoff Nov 2002

Habitat Structure And Alarm Call Dialects In Gunnison's Prairie Dog (Cynomys Gunnisoni), Bianca S. Perla, C. N. Slobodchikoff

Habitat Assessment and Management Collection

We examined the relationship between habitat structure and alarm call characteristics in six colonies of Gunnison’s prairie dogs (Cynomys gunnisoni) near Flagstaff, Arizona, before and after a mid-summer vegetation change. We found significant differences in alarm call characteristics between colonies, confirming the existence of alarm call dialects. Differences in frequency components but not temporal components of calls were associated with differences in habitat structure. Playback experiments revealed that differences in alarm call structure affected acoustic transmission of calls through the local habitat. Thus, we identify habitat structure as one factor that may contribute to alarm call differences between colonies of …

Endogenous Gonadal Hormone Exposure And Bone Sarcoma Risk, Dawn M. Cooley, Benjamin C. Beranek, Deborah L. Schlittler, Nita W. Glickman, Lawrence T. Glickman, David J. Waters Nov 2002

Endogenous Gonadal Hormone Exposure And Bone Sarcoma Risk, Dawn M. Cooley, Benjamin C. Beranek, Deborah L. Schlittler, Nita W. Glickman, Lawrence T. Glickman, David J. Waters

Endocrinology Collection

Although experimental and clinical evidence suggest that endogenous sex hormones influence bone sarcoma genesis, the hypothesis has not been adequately tested in an appropriate animal model. We conducted a historical cohort study of Rottweiler dogs because they frequently undergo elective gonadectomy and spontaneously develop appendicular bone sarcomas, which mimic the biological behavior of the osteosarcomas that affect children and adolescents. Data were collected by questionnaire from owners of 683 Rottweiler dogs living in North America. To determine whether there was an association between endogenous sex hormones and risk of bone sarcoma, relative risk (RR) of incidence rates and hazard ratios …
