This paper compares the observed reverberation response lags and the intensity ratios of the broad-line region (BLR) emission lines He II λ1640, He II λ4686, and C IV λ1549 with predictions. Published observations indicate that the He II λ1640 lag is 3 times shorter than the lags of He II λ4686 or C IV λ1549. Diverse models, however, do not reproduce this observation. Extensive improved numerical simulations of the hydrogenic isoelectronic sequence emission show that the He II spectrum remains especially simple, even in the central regions of a luminous quasar. Line trapping never builds up a significant population of …

Cell Surface Glycoprotein Pzr Is A Major Mediator Of Concanavalin A-Induced Cell Signaling, Runxiang Zhao, Abdelmadjid Guerrah, Hua Tang, Z. Joe Zhao
School of Medical and Biological Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations
PZR is an immunoglobulin superfamily cell surface protein containing a pair of immunoreceptor tyrosine-based inhibitory motifs. As a glycoprotein, PZR displays a strong association with concanavalin A (ConA), a member of the plant lectin family. Treatment of several cell lines with ConA caused tyrosine phosphorylation of a major cellular protein. Immunoblotting and immunoprecipitation studies indicated that this protein corresponded to PZR. Tyrosine phosphorylation of PZR was accompanied by recruitment of SHP-2 and was inhibited by PP1, a selective inhibitor of the Src family tyrosine kinases. Furthermore, c-Src was constitutively associated with PZR and was activated upon treatment of cells with …

Theses and Dissertations
This case study evaluates the effectiveness of supportive-expressive therapy combined with aspects of cognitive-behavioral therapy in the treatment of an adult female who has breast cancer and is diagnosed with comorbid Generalized Anxiety Disorder and Major Depressive Disorder. The subject had many psychosocial stressors. The subject voluntarily participated in outpatient individual psychotherapy received in a private counseling facility based on the twelve-step model of Alcoholics Anonymous. She completed various formal assessments of anxiety and depression periodically during the course of treatment, as well as a satisfaction survey following the termination of treatment. The literature review, which explored empirically supported treatments …

The 1.6-Å crystal structure of the covalent ketimine complex of apple 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate (ACC) synthase with the potent inhibitor L-aminoethoxyvinylglycine (AVG) is described. ACC synthase catalyzes the committed step in the biosynthesis of ethylene, a plant hormone that is responsible for the initiation of fruit ripening and for regulating many other developmental processes. AVG is widely used in plant physiology studies to inhibit the activity of ACC synthase. The structural assignment is supported by the fact that the complex absorbs maximally at 341 nm. These results are not in accord with the recently reported crystal structure of the tomato ACC synthase …

The Third Side Of The Coin, Tamara Wells-Banar
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The Third Side of the Coin is a manuscript of poetry exploring ironic distances, both physical and metaphysical, both slight and significant. It opens with a quote from Agha Shahid Ali who asked, "What then is separation's geography?" The poems in this collection describe the geography of separation between individuals, cultures, ideas, man and nature and the physical and metaphysical realms. As the author travels deserts, oceans, and outer space, she seeks proofs of existence and questions natural laws deemed irrefutable. This questioning is reflected in the book's title, which, on one hand, represents a state of geometric impossibility. And …

A Service Discovery-Enabled Lcd Projector Device, Jeevan Kale
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The widespread deployment of inexpensive communications technology, computational resources in the networking infrastructure and network-enabled end devices pose a problem for end users: how to locate a particular network service or device out of those accessible. Service providers use Service Discovery Services (SDS) to advertise the descriptions of available or already running services, while clients use SDS to compose queries for locating these services. Service descriptions and queries use the eXtensible Markup Language (XML) to encode vendor specific information and device- or service-specific capabilities as well as the actions addressed to the device or service. This report presents the architecture …

Self-Assembly, Templation And Biomimetics, Xuehe Li
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Self-assembly, templation and biomimetics are three important, overlapping areas in supramolecularChemistry. Some contributions to these three areas are introduced. Novel substituted trispyridylmethanol derived ligands were synthesized to mimic the active site of carbonic anhydrase. The key two-step process in constructing the trispyridylmethanol core structure is proven to be more efficient than the traditional one-step synthesis. Self-assembly is a very efficient way to form nanoscale structure from relatively simple subunits. Tetraphenylmethane-based subunits were synthesized. The result of self-assembly reactions demonstrated the formation of 1~3 nm sized molecules in one step. Potential multi-generation self-assembly on this subunit is also discussed. A novel …

Virtual Fetal Pig Dissection As An Agent Of Knowledge Acquisition And Attitudinal Change In Female High School Biology Students, Rebecca Maloney
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
One way to determine if all students can learn through the use of computers is to introduce a lesson taught completely via computers and compare the results with those gained when the same lesson is taught in a traditional manner. This study attempted to determine if a virtual fetal pig dissection can be used as a viable alternative for an actual dissection for females enrolled in high school biology classes by comparing the knowledge acquisition and attitudinal change between the experimental (virtual dissection) and control (actual dissection) groups. Two hundred and twenty four students enrolled in biology classes in a …
When Urban Education Meets Community Activism: A Case Of Student Empowerment In New Orleans, Lisa Richardson
When Urban Education Meets Community Activism: A Case Of Student Empowerment In New Orleans, Lisa Richardson
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
This is an ethnographic study of urban education and community development in the city of New Orleans. In New Orleans, as in all American cities, the public schools are at the center of local politics and the policies that affect community life. Institutions of public education have come under fire for failing to prepare youth to compete in the global economy. This is particularly true in urban communities, where schools serve a higher proportion of students of color facing greater incidences of poverty, underemployment and economic distress. As education policymakers and business leaders look to improve education, many of the …

Characteristics Of Quasi-Monochromatic Gravity Waves Observed With Na Lidar In The Mesopause Region At Starfire Optical Range, Nm, Xiong Hu, Alan Z. Liu, Chester S. Gardner, Gary R. Swenson
Physical Sciences - Daytona Beach
The University of Illinois Na wind/temperature lidar data collected at the Starfire Optical Range, NM, between Jan. 1998 and May 2000 was used to extract the dominant monochromatic gravity waves. By using simultaneously measured horizontal wind and temperature profiles, the vertical wavelengths (λz), (TI), and propagation directions were determined using the hodograph method. A total of 700 monochromatic gravity waves were analyzed from ~300 h of observations. It was found that 84.4% of the waves were propagating upwards. The mean λz was 12.6 km and 9.9 km for upward and downward propagating waves, respectively, and …

On The Effect Of Random Errors In Gridded Bathymetric Compilations, Martin Jakobsson, Brian R. Calder, Larry A. Mayer
Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping
We address the problem of compiling bathymetric data sets with heterogeneous coverage and a range of data measurement accuracies. To generate a regularly spaced grid, we are obliged to interpolate sparse data; our objective here is to augment this product with an estimate of confidence in the interpolated bathymetry based on our knowledge of the component of random error in the bathymetric source data. Using a direct simulation Monte Carlo method, we utilize data from the International Bathymetric Chart of the Arctic Ocean database to develop a suitable methodology for assessment of the standard deviations of depths in the interpolated …
