Migration And Cultural Identity: Performing The Afro-Caribbean Woman's Struggle, Elvinet Samantha Wilson Jan 2002

Migration And Cultural Identity: Performing The Afro-Caribbean Woman's Struggle, Elvinet Samantha Wilson

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Current research suggests a relationship between cultural identity negotiation and the phenomenon of border crossing. While a wealth of literature exists on the topic of migration, few studies reflect a scope that includes in-depth analysis of the experiences of Afro-Caribbean women in the United States.Through ethnographic and autoethnographic methodologies, and using a feminist theoretical lens, this study explores issues relating to cultural identity negotiation in the lives of 10 Black women from Jamaica, The Bahamas, and Trinidad, who now reside in the Midwest region of the United States. Analysis based on a grounded theory approach, allowed themes to emerge from …

Vanderbilt Journal of Entertainment & Technology Law

It is the central thesis of this Note that the NAAGs recommendations represent the necessary linchpin in creating a coherent regulatory regime for ensuring that professional boxing is both safe and legitimate. In order to place a discussion of regulatory solutions in a proper frame, this Note begins by describing the problems that have long plagued professional boxing. This Note next explicates two federal laws designed to redress the corruption and abuses lawmakers found to be inherent in professional boxing. These laws are the Professional Boxing Safety Act ("PBSA") and the Muhammad Ali Boxing Reform Act ("Ali Act"). This Note …

The Government Tunes In To Tune Out The Marketing Of Violent Entertainment To Kids, Shannon Mccoy Jan 2002

The Government Tunes In To Tune Out The Marketing Of Violent Entertainment To Kids, Shannon Mccoy

Vanderbilt Journal of Entertainment & Technology Law

This Note examines the recent investigation conducted by the Federal Trade Commission ("FTC" or "Commission") and its 2001 Follow-Up to that inquiry. The September 2000 Report ("Report") concluded that the entertainment industry intentionally and aggressively advertises both R and PG-13 movies to children under the age of 18. As a solution, the FTC recommended self-regulation by the entertainment industry. The 2001 Follow-Up to the Report ("Follow-Up") found that although the movie industry has made progress, a greater effort must be exerted to successfully eliminate the marketing of violent entertainment to children.' Both the Report and the Follow-Up demonstrate that self-regulation …

Development And Evaluation Plans Of A Denominational Program To Equip Local Church Leaders With Creative Thinking And Problem Solving Techniques, Richard C. Harris

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

The problem investigated within the Free Methodist Church was that church leaders (pastors and lay leaders) lacked skills in how to proactively engage churches in creative thinking and problem solving. The purpose of this project was to develop a program to help church leaders improve creative thinking and problem-solving skills and to design a plan for evaluating such a program.

There were four comprehensive research questions for this study. The first was "What is the subject matter of a comprehensive program for developing in church leaders the skills and attitudes needed to improve creative thinking and problem solving? The second …

The Youngs At West Point, J. Michael Hunter

Faculty Publications

In 1871, Willard Young, eleventh son of Brigham Young, was the first Mormon to receive an appointment to West Point Academy. His attendance at the military academy drew national attention and criticism from opponents of polygamy. Despite the opposition, he soon gained the respect of his classmates and graduated fourth in his class. He returned to teach engineering in 1879, served in the Spanish-American War, earning a commendation from President McKinley, and during World War I was supervisor of army engineering work on the Missouri River. In 1877, one of Brigham's grandsons, Richard W. Young, was the second Mormon to …

Continuity In Dynamic Coalition Operations, Holly A. H. Handley, Larry K. Wentz, Alexander H. Levis Jan 2002

Continuity In Dynamic Coalition Operations, Holly A. H. Handley, Larry K. Wentz, Alexander H. Levis

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Faculty Publications

The combination of participating organizations in a coalition operation often changes over time; the coalition is dynamic and evolves over the course of its mission. A given organization may participate in the coalition only at the stage where its expertise or resources are most needed, while other organizations may participate through the entire course of the operation. As these are independent organizations coming together for a limited time to meet a specific goal, the structure of the coalition must be able to accommodate the different command arrangements, procedures, and other characteristics of each organization. In order to develop a theory …

Twentieth Century American Tragedy: Defining Aristotelian Hamartia And Its Allegorical Function In Philip Roth's "I Married A Communist", Vicki Lynn Short Jan 2002

Twentieth Century American Tragedy: Defining Aristotelian Hamartia And Its Allegorical Function In Philip Roth's "I Married A Communist", Vicki Lynn Short

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Philip Roth's novel I Married a Communist exhibits an important thematic current, one which demonstrates how immoderation in individual human character both reflects and proliferates an irrational and insidious political divisiveness, and more importantly, the far-reaching and devastating effects that extremism has on the individual. This theme is clearly derivative of Aristotle's ideas regarding literature and ethics. Furthermore, applying these ideas with those in Aristotle's Poetics, namely the concept of hamartia, I demonstrate how immoderation becomes the impetus for peripeteia, the reversal of fortune that ultimately destroys the novel's tragic hero, as defined by Aristotle.

Leesburg, Florida During World War Ii: Portrait Of An American Home Front, Robin C. Tinsley Jan 2002

Leesburg, Florida During World War Ii: Portrait Of An American Home Front, Robin C. Tinsley

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

World War II has been considered a "golden age" for Americans, years during which civilians cooperated in defense programs and faced shortages with cheerful self-sacrifice. The wartime experiences of individual communities such as Leesburg, Florida, provide pieces of the national mosaic and offer insight into small town perspectives of home front duty and obligation. Leesburg's residents faced the same adjustments as other Americans, and their immersion in wartime activities cultivated characteristic home front patriotism. Though the town's population nearly doubled when unprecedented military expansion brought thousands of personnel into the area, and hundreds of German POWs arrived to ease the …

Significance Of The Space Between: A Consideration Of Liminality, Meditation, And Modernity In Selected Poems By Wallace Stevens And Charles Baudelaire, Charles S. Wonn Jan 2002

Significance Of The Space Between: A Consideration Of Liminality, Meditation, And Modernity In Selected Poems By Wallace Stevens And Charles Baudelaire, Charles S. Wonn

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

The state of liminality, as defined by Mihai Spariosu and exemplified by Wallace Stevens and Charles Baudelaire, is a significant one, transitional in its "structure," and one in which a vital activity takes place. Namely, this activity is the moving between worlds, states, or perceptions, and the choice of new ones, or of considering new potentialities. Essentially, this idea of being in limbo and the result of this state of "in-betweenness" is that we emerge from a relatively indeterminate, contemplative, and subjective space with an ultimate satisfaction or heightened or altered awareness. Much of Stevens's poetry, especially his later poetry, …

Factors Affecting The Bit Error Rate Performance Of The Indoor Radio Propagation Channel For 2.3-2.5 Ghz Frequency Band, Edward A. Walker Jan 2002

Factors Affecting The Bit Error Rate Performance Of The Indoor Radio Propagation Channel For 2.3-2.5 Ghz Frequency Band, Edward A. Walker

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The use of wireless in buildings based on microwave radio technology has recently become a viable alternative to the traditional wired transmission media. Because of the portable nature of radio transceivers, the need for extensive cabling of buildings with either twisted pair, coaxial, or optical fibre cable is eliminated. This is particularly desirable where high user mobility occurs and existing wiring is not in place, or buildings are heritage in nature and extensive cabling is seen as intrusive. Economic analysis bas also shown that significant labour cost savings can result by using a radio system or a hybrid mix of …

Fatigue, Ambulance Perspectives In A Comparative Study Between Air And Road Transports, Wayne J. Mckenna

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The study of fatigue in the health and transport sectors has predominantly been focused on night shift or day shift operations. This study has been applied to the hours of operation of Ambulance Officers who perform both night and day shifts, while also being required for on-call. The Officer on-call is on stand-by between shifts, to be available to respond for duties from the completion of one shift until the commencement of the next, usually a ten-hour shift. Studies of a similar focus have not been identified so a comparison of these specific findings has not been possible. However trends …

The Development Of Personal, Analogous And Universal Thinking Through In-Role Drama : A Case Study, Sarah Riddoch Jan 2002

The Development Of Personal, Analogous And Universal Thinking Through In-Role Drama : A Case Study, Sarah Riddoch

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The main purpose of this study was to investigate the development of the problem-solving skills of eleven year olds in a Western Australian Primary school when the teacher and the children were in-role within the drama. The teacher, as teacher in-role, and the students role-played a variety of situations in which effective problem-solving skills were used. As the study progressed the nature of the children's use of symbol and metaphor became an important issue. In the first session the teacher in-role as the Mayor of a small town informed the children in-role as the town council that an alien spacecraft …

A Study Of The Experience Of Dramatic Performance For Drama Students, Dale M. Irving Jan 2002

A Study Of The Experience Of Dramatic Performance For Drama Students, Dale M. Irving

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Learning involves cognitive, psychological, sociological, historical, philosophical, aesthetic, emotional and spiritual aspects. This study argues that the spiritual dimension of the psyche is overlooked in the research into education. Spirituality in education is not easily addressed in secular settings and needs exploration and explication. The thesis probes the interstice between the act of dramatic performance and the spiritual awareness of the individual. Case studies allow the exploration of the experience of performance for senior high school drama students, drama teacher trainees and an adult actor. The students attended a school and university in Western Australia. The study posits that in …

Academic Gains Of Students With Special Needs In An Independent Religious School, Ivanka Saric Jan 2002

Academic Gains Of Students With Special Needs In An Independent Religious School, Ivanka Saric

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The number of children who are performing poorly in school-wide tests seems to be increasing in an independent religious school in the metropolitan area. Several children have been identified "at risk" or having special needs but they seem to show little if any improvement as they get promoted to higher grades. The study investigated the instructional and assessment strategies that upper primary school teachers were using in their classrooms to improve the academic and social skills of children defined as having special needs. Teachers' perceptions were examined to determine whether there had been any observable increases in the academic performance …

Narrative, Meaning Making And Personal Development: Teachers' Storied Experience In Montessori, Steiner And Other Primary Classrooms, Gayle C. Ward Jan 2002

Narrative, Meaning Making And Personal Development: Teachers' Storied Experience In Montessori, Steiner And Other Primary Classrooms, Gayle C. Ward

Theses

This study explored how narrative was being used to foster meaning-making in Montessori, Steiner, Government and Catholic schools. In-depth interviews of twelve teachers from the four educational settings were used to collect the teachers' stories that comprised the data on narrative use. NUD*IST software was employed to organise data and to focus on emerging concepts through data analysis. A wide spectrum of narrative uses related to meaning making was revealed. These varied understandings support using narrative to foster insight on three levels relating to several theoretical views of narrative and its importance.
