Thirteen Texts Every Student Must Read To Have A Well-Rounded High School Theatre Education, Gary Bernard Sessa Jan 2002

Thirteen Texts Every Student Must Read To Have A Well-Rounded High School Theatre Education, Gary Bernard Sessa

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This thesis is a discussion of theatre literature and its place in the high school curriculum. Until now, no one has published what specific theatre texts should be taught to students in high school before they graduate. However, with national standards paving the way for the future of education, and the idea that no child will be left behind, every curriculum, not just the core ones, needs to have a list of required reading before a student graduates from high school. This is the only way to insure a well-rounded high school education in theatre. Thirteen diverse texts ranging from …

Internationalised Criminal Trial And Access To Justice, Mark Findlay Jan 2002

Internationalised Criminal Trial And Access To Justice, Mark Findlay

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

The influence of a human rights paradigm over the recent development of local and regional criminal justice concerns throughout Europe is indisputable. Essential to this is the commitment that crucial lay parties within the justice process (such as the accused and the victims) should have adequate access to common procedural protections of criminal justice. This paper takes this trend and measures its influence on the development of international criminal justice, the trial in particular. At the very least we argue that parallel concerns about fair trial in the international procedural context will endorse the importance of a fair trial paradigm …

Wrestling With Tv “Rasslin”, Paul Duncum Jan 2002

Wrestling With Tv “Rasslin”, Paul Duncum

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

TV wrestling stretches the envelope of what art educators might consider legitimate content under the emerging art educational paradigm of visual culture. (Duncum & Bracey, 2001) TV wrestling. Or "rasslin" as it’s known to its audience, is a significant cultural site because it is very popular and, under analysis, has much to say about contemporary cultural experience, especially that of its audience. While it provides pleasures and reference points to its audience, these reference points are often sexist, xenophobic, homophobic, and in terms of familial relationships, dysfunctional. They are also violent and obscene. This paper both acknowledges the lived experience …

Heads Above The Grass, Edgar Heap Of Birds Jan 2002

Heads Above The Grass, Edgar Heap Of Birds

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

Today it is imperative that we acknowledge the brutality, intolerance and biased actions of the past. Thus by lifting our heads above the tall grass we can move forward to personal affirmation and progress. This progress can be represented by the educational and artistic exploration of complex issues of our society. In the field of art education we can articulate the progress by welcoming the creative activities of all vectors of youthful life and culture. Through this acceptance a wealth of experiences can be deposited to actually create more understanding and an enriched learning atmosphere. Once the multi-form stories of …

The Stolen Generations: Lessons Australia Can Reveal To The Rest Of The World, Nicola Breeze, Marge Campbell, Zeena Elton

Irish Journal of Applied Social Studies

In recent years groups of young people, educators, and leaders of peace and reconciliation processes internationally, have met to learn from each other's experiences of various reconciliation settings from across the world. Let's Talk is a project that facilitates cross-cultural and international exchange amongst people from diverse regions including Australia, Latin America, the European Union, Africa, Asia and the Middle East. One of the key issues in the process of Reconciliation between Indigenous and nonIndigenous peoples in Australia relates to the widespread removal of Aboriginal children from their families as an instrument of assimilation; what has become intemationally known as …

Review Of Buffalo Bill's Wild West: Celebrity, Memory, And Popular History By Joy S. Kasson, Sarah J. Blackstone Jan 2002

Review Of Buffalo Bill's Wild West: Celebrity, Memory, And Popular History By Joy S. Kasson, Sarah J. Blackstone

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Joy Kasson's study of William Cody as the first modern celebrity, a man who took advantage of every medium and life experience to build on his fame and accrue a fortune, is a good addition to the existing material on Buffalo Bill. It synthesizes the huge variety of material available on Cody and provides a focused look at the aspects of his life that affected the myth of the American West.

The book's real strength is its author's ability to walk the fine line between admiration of Cody and excoriation. She achieves a balanced portrait of this complicated man by …

The Beginning Of The End The Indian Peace Commission Of 1867~1868, Kerry R. Oman

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

In 1867, in an effort to avoid the high costs of war and protect overland transportation routes, Congress passed a bill authorizing a commission to establish peace with the Plains Indians. In less than two years, what proved to be the last major commission sent out by the government to treat with the Indians met and signed treaties with the Kiowa, Comanche, Kiowa-Apache, Northern and Southern Cheyenne and Arapaho, Crow, Navajo, Eastern Shoshone and Bannock, and the Brule, Oglala, Miniconjou, Yanktonai, Hunkpapa, Blackfeet, Cuthead, Two Kettle, Sans Arc, and Santee bands of Lakota Sioux. Their efforts helped end Red Cloud's …

[Introduction To] Alegorías De La Disidencia: El Teatro De Agustín Gómez-Arcos, Sharon G. Feldman

Bookshelf

This book is a case study of the relationship between art and oppression. It is the first book devoted to Gomez-Arcos, a member of a "lost" generation of Spanish dramatists who were silenced during the Franco era. It addresses three crucial issues that define both his literature and his life: censorship, exile, and bilingualism.

Quantification Of Marine Megafaunal Distribution Patterns Using A Remotely Operated Vehicle, David Matthew Parry Jan 2002

Quantification Of Marine Megafaunal Distribution Patterns Using A Remotely Operated Vehicle, David Matthew Parry

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses

This thesis documents the development and application of the Automated Benthic Image Scaling System (ABISS), a novel structured lighting array for calculating image scale, accounting for perspective, to allow quantitative non-destructive megafaunal sampling using observations from a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV). Megafauna are important components of marine soft sediment assemblages that influence the composition of the associated assemblage and the flux of energy across the sediment-water interface, by altering the physical and chemical characteristics of the sediment during bioturbation. However, megafaunal species are not sampled adequately using traditional techniques. Megafaunal abundance estimates derived from ROV observations were validated against those …
