Evaluating A Medical Error Taxonomy, Juliana Brixey, Todd R. Johnson, Jiajie Zhang
Evaluating A Medical Error Taxonomy, Juliana Brixey, Todd R. Johnson, Jiajie Zhang
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
Healthcare has been slow in using human factors principles to reduce medical errors. The Center for Devices and Radiological Health (CDRH) recognizes that a lack of attention to human factors during product development may lead to errors that have the potential for patient injury, or even death. In response to the need for reducing medication errors, the National Coordinating Council for Medication Errors Reporting and Prevention (NCC MERP) released the NCC MERP taxonomy that provides a standard language for reporting medication errors. This project maps the NCC MERP taxonomy of medication error to MedWatch medical errors involving infusion pumps. Of …

Discounting And Reciprocity In An Iterated Prisoner’S Dilemma, David W. Stephens, Colleen M. Mclinn, Jeffrey R. Stevens
Jeffrey Stevens Publications
The Iterated Prisoner’s Dilemma (IPD) is a central paradigm in the study of animal cooperation. According to the IPD framework, repeated play (repetition) and reciprocity combine to maintain a cooperative equilibrium. However, experimental studies with animals suggest that cooperative behavior in IPDs is unstable, and some have suggested that strong preferences for immediate benefits (that is, temporal discounting) might explain the fragility of cooperative equilibria. We studied the effects of discounting and strategic reciprocity on cooperation in captive blue jays. Our results demonstrate an interaction between discounting and reciprocity. Blue jays show high stable levels of cooperation in treatments with …
Introduction: Charlotte Perkins Gilman On The Symbolism And Sociology Of Clothing, Michael R. Hill, Mary Jo Deegan
Introduction: Charlotte Perkins Gilman On The Symbolism And Sociology Of Clothing, Michael R. Hill, Mary Jo Deegan
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
In The Dress of Women, Charlotte Perkins Gilman presents a nonfiction analysis of the symbolism and sociology of clothing. Originally published in Gilman's monthly journal, The Forerunner, in 1915, The Dress of Women was serialized, month by month, at the same time as Gilman's well-known novel, Herland, and a year prior to Gilman's companion work, With Her In Ourland: Sequel to Herland. The Dress of Women, published here for the first time in book form, is a lively, nonfiction guidebook to many of the gender issues presented in Gilman's Herland/Ourland saga and provides Gilman's intellectual, philosophical, and sociological insight into …

Antisocial Alcoholism And Serotonin-Related Polymorphisms: Association Tests, Elizabeth M. Hill, Scott F. Stoltenberg, Katherine Harris Bullard, Sheng Li, Robert A. Zucker, Marget Burmeister
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
Central serotonin dysfunction appears to be related to a subtype of alcoholism with antisocial impulsive features (type II; antisocial alcoholism). The serotonergic deficit may be associated with greater impulsivity, which in turn facilitates both alcohol dependence and antisocial behavior. The present study tested association of antisocial impulsive alcoholism with candidate genes related to serotonergic neurotransmission, using families. Eight markers were assayed using polymerase chain reaction: tryptophan hydroxylase (intron 7), the serotonin transporter SLC6A4 (VNTR 9/12), HTTLPR, the three serotonin receptor types HTR1B (G861C), HTR2A (T102C) and HTR2C (Cys23Ser), monoamine oxidase A (T1460C), and (CA)n. Eligible probands had early …
A Brief History Of Educational Development: Implications For Teachers And Developers, Richard G. Tiberius
A Brief History Of Educational Development: Implications For Teachers And Developers, Richard G. Tiberius
To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development
An historical review of the practice of educational development identified four belief systems about teaching and learning that shape the practice. Each system is characterized by an assumption about the teacher’s role: content expert; performer, who makes learning happen; facilitator, who encourages learning through interaction; and helper, whose relationship with learners is a vehicle for learning. The good news is that even teachers who are limited to only one of these belief systems can be successful. On the other hand, developers must have an appreciation for more than one belief system if they are to be successful at helping teachers.
Instructional Development: Relationships To Teaching And Learning In Higher Education, Kathleen Mckinney
Instructional Development: Relationships To Teaching And Learning In Higher Education, Kathleen Mckinney
To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development
The purpose of this chapter is to review recent literature on instructional development in higher education. More specifically, it defines and illustrates instructional development as a major component of faculty development. Next, it reviews research on how development activities are associated with teaching and learning. Finally, it argues there is a critical need for additional research and offers suggestions for accomplishing that research agenda.
Teaching Discourses: Science Teachers' Responses To The Voices Of Adolescent Girls, Gayle A. Buck
Teaching Discourses: Science Teachers' Responses To The Voices Of Adolescent Girls, Gayle A. Buck
Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications
The purpose of this study was to provide an opportunity for science teachers to ‘listen’ to adolescent girls discuss their ideas and feelings about the contemporary structure of middle-level science education. The reflections of these teachers were then analyzed to capture how the teachers interpreted what adolescent girls had to say and the action that they will take in the classroom as a result of those interpretations. This qualitative study investigated 11 teachers and 51 Grade 7 and 8 girls from various states across the continental USA. The girls discussed such things as their favorite science topics, comfort level in …
The Role Of Hypothesis Testing In Wildlife Science, Douglas H. Johnson
The Role Of Hypothesis Testing In Wildlife Science, Douglas H. Johnson
United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications
Statistical testing of null hypotheses recently has come under fire in wildlife sciences (Cherry 1998; Johnson 1999; Anderson et al. 2000, 2001). In response to this criticism, Robinson and Wainer (2002) provide some further background information on significance testing; they argue that significance testing in fact is useful in certain situations. I counter by suggesting that such situations rarely arise in our field. I agree with Robinson and Wainer that replication is the key to scientific advancement. I believe, however, that significance testing and resulting P-values frequently are confused with issues of replication. Any single study can yield a P-value, …
Kant And Capital Punishment Today, Nelson T. Potter
Kant And Capital Punishment Today, Nelson T. Potter
Department of Philosophy: Faculty Publications
We will consider alternative ways that Kant’s philosophical views on ethics generally and on punishment more particularly could be brought into harmony with the present near consensus of opposition to the death penalty. We will make use of the notion of the contemporary consensus about certain issues, particularly equality of the sexes and the death penalty, found in widespread agreement, though not unanimity. Of course, it is always possible that some consensuses are wrong, or misguided, or mistaken. We should not put too much philosophical weight on the notion of a consensus here. If there is a consensus for the …

What A Mess! Participation As A Simple Managerial Rule To “Complexify” Organizations, Donde Ashmos Plowman, Dennis Duchon, Reuben R. Mcdaniel Jr., John W. Huonker
Department of Management: Faculty Publications
This paper adopts a view of organizations as complex adaptive systems and makes a case for making organizations more complex internally through the use of a fairly simple managerial rule—using participative decision making. Participation in decision making enhances connectivity in organizations, which in turn, gives the organization the opportunity to self-organize and co-evolve in more effective ways than when there is minimal connectivity (i.e., autocracy). The paper uses a specific body of research to support the arguments about why participation can benefit the practice of management in modern organizations.
The Nebraska Death Penalty Study: An Interdisciplinary Symposium, Robert F. Schopp
The Nebraska Death Penalty Study: An Interdisciplinary Symposium, Robert F. Schopp
Nebraska College of Law: Faculty Publications
The four papers presented in this symposium reflect upon and develop the data presented and the concerns raised during a public panel at the University of Nebraska in February 2002. That panel and this symposium were organized to promote public discussion of and reflection upon an empirical study that examined the death penalty as it has been applied in Nebraska during the last quarter of the twentieth century! Those who support the death penalty, those who oppose it, and those who remain uncertain should agree at least on the following proposition. The death penalty raises some of the most important …
The Need For And Meaning Of Positive Organizational Behavior, Fred Luthans
The Need For And Meaning Of Positive Organizational Behavior, Fred Luthans
Department of Management: Faculty Publications
This essay draws from the emerging positive psychology movement and the author’s recent articles on the need for and meaning of a positive approach to organizational behavior. Specifically, the argument is made that at this time, the OB field needs a proactive, positive approach emphasizing strengths, rather than continuing in the downward spiral of negativity trying to fix weaknesses. However, to avoid the surface positivity represented by the non-sustainable best-sellers, the case is made for positive organizational behavior (POB) to take advantage of the OB field’s strength of being theory and research driven. Additional criteria for this version of POB …
Lmx And Subordinate Performance: The Moderating Effects Of Task Characteristics, Kenneth Dunegan, Mary Uhl-Bien, Dennis Duchon
Lmx And Subordinate Performance: The Moderating Effects Of Task Characteristics, Kenneth Dunegan, Mary Uhl-Bien, Dennis Duchon
Department of Management: Faculty Publications
Role conflict, role ambiguity, and intrinsic task satisfaction are found to moderate the relationship between leader–member exchange (LMX) and subordinate performance. Data from a field study of 146 supervisor–subordinate dyads indicate low conflict, high ambiguity, and high intrinsic satisfaction enhance the link between LMX and performance. Neutralizing effects are found when ambiguity and intrinsic satisfaction are low. High conflict appears to have a constraining effect, whereby the connection between LMX and performance is reduced but not neutralized. Results from the study call attention to the theoretical and practical benefits of examining the LMX/performance link from a contingency perspective, and offer …

The distinguished health law and policy scholars we invite to contribute to the American Journal of Law & Medicine's annual symposium issue are given carte blanche to write about any aspect of the designated topic that appeals to them. The authors in this year's genetics symposium, The Genetic Revolution: Conflicts, Challenges and Conundra, are already well known for their work in the field-in fact three of them have just co-authored the only casebook specifically dedicated to the law, policy and ethics of geneticsl-and we deliberately asked them for relatively short pieces on the theory that taken together their articles would …
The Effects Of Item Parceling On Goodness-Of-Fit And Parameter Estimate Bias In Structural Equation Modeling, Deborah L. Bandalos
The Effects Of Item Parceling On Goodness-Of-Fit And Parameter Estimate Bias In Structural Equation Modeling, Deborah L. Bandalos
Department of Educational Psychology: Faculty Publications
Two simulation studies were conducted to investigate the effects of the practice of item parceling. In Study 1, unidimensional sets of normally and nonnormally distributed item-level data were categorized into 2-, 3-, and 4-item parcels. Analyses revealed that the use of item parcels resulted in better fitting solutions, as measured by the root mean squared error of approximation (RMSEA), comparative fit index (CFI), and chi-square test, when items had a unidimensional structure. Parceled solutions also resulted in less bias in estimates of structural parameters under these conditions than did solutions based on the individual items. In Study 2 the issue …
Cultural Aspects Of Drinking Patterns And Alcohol Controls In China, Ian Newman
Cultural Aspects Of Drinking Patterns And Alcohol Controls In China, Ian Newman
Department of Educational Psychology: Faculty Publications
Alcohol, 'jiu' in Mandarin, is intimately intertwined in almost every aspect of Chinese culture and has been since earliest times. China's cultural traditions, which have until now minimized the risks associated with alcohol use, will be challenged as China opens to the West There will be a tendency for outsiders to encourage the adoption of Western-style policies to address problems from alcohol abuse. Doing so without careful consideration of the cultural role of alcohol could be counterproductive.
Alcohol Expectancies Among High School Students In China, Duane F. Shell, Ian Newman, Ming Qu
Alcohol Expectancies Among High School Students In China, Duane F. Shell, Ian Newman, Ming Qu
Department of Educational Psychology: Faculty Publications
There is little systematic information on the patterns of Chinese adolescents' alcohol expectancies and the influence of expectancies on drinking behavior. The purpose of this study was to examine Chinese high school students' alcohol expectancies and gender and drinking status (non-drinker, occasional drinker, regular drinker) differences in expectancies. We administered the Chinese Adolescent Alcohol Expectancy Questionnaire (CAEQ) to 1244 high school students (M = 627; F = 617) in Inner Mongolia, China. We Identified eight expectancy factors three negative (general negative consequences, harm to person/reputation, and negative uses of alcohol) and five positive (general positive perceptions, tension reduction/relaxation, drinking as …
The Effects Of Using Computer-Assisted Learning To Teach Multiplication, Brian Unruh
The Effects Of Using Computer-Assisted Learning To Teach Multiplication, Brian Unruh
Graduate Research Papers
This case study investigated the effects of using computer-assisted learning (CAL) while teaching multiplication facts to 32 third-graders. This quasi-experimental study spanned a six-week period and was analyzed using a variety of qualitative and quantitative techniques. Among these qualitative techniques were participant observation and formal and informal interviews. The quantitative component included document analysis of three separate instruments. This study demonstrated a low correlation between the use of CAL and recall skills. However, students felt comfortable and enthusiastic working with the computer. In addition to the excitement, students felt significantly more confident and successful using the computer. There was evidence …

Play Therapy For Victims Of Abuse In The School Setting, Jennifer J. Turner-Peterson
Graduate Research Papers
As a form of therapy, play enhances the developmentally progressive and adaptive nature of children and adults. Play helps children who have experienced physical, emotional, or sexual abuse display and deal with traumatizing thoughts they may be experiencing. When used correctly, the play therapy process can be an excellent tool in helping children who may be suffering from abuse. This paper will describe how school counselors can effectively employ play therapy in a school setting with children who are victims of abuse. The author of this paper will address components of the play therapy process, play behaviors of abused children, …
