Microfinance In India And The Role Of It, Rahul Bhattacharya
Microfinance In India And The Role Of It, Rahul Bhattacharya
IIMB Management Review
Microfinance has proved to be extremely effective as a means of improving the economic condition and empowering the rural poor through participatory credit lending schemes. In an award winning student essay, Rahul Bhattacharya explains that microfinance helps the poor in various ways, not only by improving their economic condition, but also by means of the attendant benefits that a higher income level has on factors like health, education, economic and social status of women, and the general standard of living.
Blending Business And It Strategy : A Conceptual Model, R Ramaswamy
Blending Business And It Strategy : A Conceptual Model, R Ramaswamy
IIMB Management Review
In this new age of the knowledge-based economy, the search for a more dynamic and sustainable competitive advantage has led to many organisations investing substantially in IT–based tools and solutions. But in most cases these investments have not been justified by the returns. The main reason for this is the disjointed manner of framing business and IT strategies leading to the segregation of the people, process, and technology aspects of management. Moreover, the benefits are marginal if carried out over existing strategies, structures, and processes. To derive the real benefits of investments in IT and paradigms of transformation in the …

Does Nationality Affect Job Satisfaction?, Furqan Qamar, Talal Al Junaibi
IIMB Management Review
Job satisfaction and the factors that contribute to it are well-researched phenomena. Despite this, however, theories of job satisfaction are still not well perfected. Research in the field falls into five categories based on the causes of satisfaction they seek to establish: need fulfilment models, discrepancy models, value attainment models, equity models and trait component models. The last category includes studies that investigate the relationship between job satisfaction and the cultural and ethnic background of employees. Studies in this area report contradictory findings. Furqan Qamar and Talal Al Junaibi survey the literature and find that though several studies have been …
Ethics For Business : Drawing On Indian Values, S K Chakraborty
Ethics For Business : Drawing On Indian Values, S K Chakraborty
IIMB Management Review
Prof S K Chakraborty of the Management Centre for Human Values, IIM Calcutta, and author of the Management Ethics Omnibus, shares the essence of his enquiry into the field for over two decades. To the basic question from students and managers as to what there is in ethics for them, teachers must communicate that ethics has fundamental existential payoffs. Especially in today’s fast-paced world, where patience is no longer a virtue and ‘false gospels’ such as rank ordering and corporate gladiatorism are being embraced in toto by the Indian intellectual elite, without pausing to reflect on their own tradition and …

Whither Business Ethics Teaching In India?, R C Sekhar
IIMB Management Review
In his effort to analyse the state of business ethics teaching in India, R C Sekhar, Professor Emeritus, T A Pai Management Institute and author of Ethical Choices in Businesses, begins by identifying the six different segments of stakeholders involved and their differing expectations. While conceding that it is a ‘desirable but daunting task’ to establish congruence of interest between teachers, students, Indian employers, global employers, Indian society and global society, he takes the pragmatic first step of devising a strategy of teaching ethics, which would consider the interests of teachers and students. From the salient trends in Indian teaching and …

Approaches To The Teaching Of Ethics : In Conversation With S K Chakraborty And R C Sekhar, C Manohar Reddy
IIMB Management Review
Prof S K Chakraborty of IIM Calcutta and Prof R C Sekhar of the T A Pai Management Institute, Manipal took time off from the National Workshop on Teaching Business Ethics at IIMB, to discuss their perspectives on the philosophy and methodology of teaching ethics, and on human values with Prof C Manohar Reddy and Prof Mira Bakhru of IIMB. The discussion raised several issues regarding ethics education. Can ethics be taught at all to adults? What is the proof of the efficacy of ethics education? Do the participants behave more ethically after attending ethics courses? How does the ‘individual …
U.S. East Coast Trough Indices At 500 Hpa And New England Winter Climate Variability, James A. Bradbury, Barry D. Keim, Cameron P. Wake
U.S. East Coast Trough Indices At 500 Hpa And New England Winter Climate Variability, James A. Bradbury, Barry D. Keim, Cameron P. Wake
Earth Sciences
Using monthly gridded 500-hPa data, two synoptic indices are defined to better understand the principle mechanisms controlling intraseasonal to multiannual winter climate variability in NewEngland (NE). The “trough axis index” (TAI) is created to quantify the mean longitudinal position of the common East Coast pressure trough, and the “trough intensity index” (TII) is calculated to estimate the relative amplitude of this trough at 42.5°N. The TAI and TII are then compared with records for NE regional winter precipitation, temperature, and snowfall with the goal of understanding physical mechanisms linking NE winter climate with regional sea surface temperatures (SST), the North …

Rotational Lift: Something Different Or More Of The Same?, Jeffrey A. Walker Phd
Rotational Lift: Something Different Or More Of The Same?, Jeffrey A. Walker Phd
Faculty Publications
This paper addresses the question, do the rotational forces in the hovering fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster reflect something different (the Magnus effect) or more of the same (circulatory-and-attached-vortex force)? The results of an unsteady blade-element model using empirically derived force coefficients from translating (root-oscillating) wings are compared with recent results derived from both the measured forces on a dynamically scaled Drosophila wing and the computational fluid dynamic (CFD)-modeled forces on a virtual Drosophila wing. The behavior of the forces in all three models during wing rotation supports the hypothesis that rotational lift is not a novel aerodynamic mechanism but is …

Lake Tahoe Bottom Characteristics Extracted From Shoals Lidar Waveform Data And Compared To Backscatter Data From A Multibeam Echo Sounder, G. Elston, James V. Gardner
Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping
The waveforms recorded by airborne lidar bathymetry (ALB) systems are currently processed only for depth information. In addition to bathymetry, multibeam echo sounder (MBES) systems provide backscatter data in which regions of different acoustic properties are distinguishable. These regions can often be correlated to different bottom types. Initial attempts to extract equivalent data from the ALB waveforms have confirmed the expectation that such information is encoded in those waveforms. Water clarity, bathymetry, and bottom type control the detailed shapes of ALB waveforms in different ways. Specific features of a bottom-reflected signal can be identified, for example its rise-time and amplitude, …

Septal Defect: What Are The Risk Factors For Its Failure? Running Title: Left Atrioventricular Valve Function., Mohamed-Adel Elgamal, Daniel Turner
Mansoura Medical Journal
Objective : To assess the function of the left atrioventricular valve (LAW) following surgical repair of complete atrioventricular septal defect (CAVSD) and find out the possible risk factors for development of left atrioventricular valve regurgitation (LAVVR). Methods : Over a ten-year period, 105 patients with the diagnosis of CAVSD underwent surgical repair using the two-patch technique at our institution. According to our inclusion criteria, only 97 patients were included in this study. Patients were evaluated preoperatively by full history taking, physical examination and 2-D echo-Doppler evaluation. Intraopera-tive transesophageal ecnocardiogra-phy was performed in all patients. Results : The included 51 boys …

Physics
The Cryogenic Dark Matter Search (CDMS) employs low-temperature Ge and Si detectors to search for weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) via their elastic-scattering interactions with nuclei while discriminating against interactions of background particles. For recoil energies above 10 keV, events due to background photons are rejected with >99.9% efficiency, and surface events are rejected with >95% efficiency. The estimate of the background due to neutrons is based primarily on the observation of multiple-scatter events that should all be neutrons. Data selection is determined primarily by examining calibration data and vetoed events. Resulting efficiencies should be accurate to ∼10%. Results of …

“Private” Crime In Public Housing: Violent Victimization, Fear Of Crime And Social Isolation Among Women Public Housing Residents, Claire M. Renzetti, Shana L. Maier
CRVAW Faculty Journal Articles
Although public housing is typically associated with high crime rates, little research has been done on fear of crime or violent victimization experiences among public housing residents. Moreover, there are few studies that look specifically at women’s fear of crime or violent victimization experiences in public housing, despite the fact that women constitute the majority of public housing residents. These issues were examined in the present study through interviews with female public housing residents in Camden, New Jersey (NJ). The interviews reveal high rates of violent victimization, especially at the hands of intimates and acquaintances. Fear of crime is also …
