Precision Measurement Of Energy And Position Resolutions Of The Btev Electromagnetic Calorimeter Prototype, Raymond Mountain, K. Khroustalev, V.A. Batarin, T. Brennan

Physics - All Scholarship

The energy dependence of the energy and position resolutions of the electromagnetic calorimeter prototype made of lead tungstate crystals produced in Bogoroditsk (Russia) and Shanghai (China) is presented. These measurementswere carried out at the Protvino accelerator using a 1 to 45 GeV electron beam. The crystals were coupled to photomultiplier tubes. The dependence of energy and position resolutions on different factors as well as the measured electromagnetic shower lateral profile are presented.

Segmented Roll For Casting Metal Strip, James R. Sauer, Ronald J. O'Malley, Robert S. Williams Nov 2002

Segmented Roll For Casting Metal Strip, James R. Sauer, Ronald J. O'Malley, Robert S. Williams

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Casting molten metal using a segmented roll for casting continuous metal strip. A strip caster (10) for producing a continuous strip (18) includes a tundish for containing a melt and a pair of horizontally disposed water cooled composite casting rolls (84). The casting rolls are juxtaposed relative to one another for forming a pouring basin (16) for receiving molten metal. The composite rolls are formed from a plurality of annular segments (45). Each segment preferably includes at least a pair of coolant openings (34) and means for aligning the coolant openings, such as a pair of alignment openings (26). The …

N-Thiolated β-Lactam Antibiotics, Edward Turos, Edward T. Carpenter, Timothy Long, Daniel V. Lim, Sonja S. Dickey

USF Patents

Substituted monocyclic β-lactam compounds that are N-1-thiolated monolactams, and which exhibit wide-ranging antibacterial activities, having a single 4-membered azetidinone ring in which: the N-1 nitrogen atom of the azetidinone ring is bonded to sulfur but is not sulfonated, of the formula: wherein R1-5 are independently hydrogen, alkyl, heteroalkyl, aryl, heteroaryl, alkenyl, or alkynyl; X is H, C, or O; and n=0-3. Chemical synthesis of these compounds by a [2+2]-imine-acid chloride cycloaddition, and methods for subsequent derivatization, are also disclosed. The compounds and compositions disclosed herein are useful as antibacterial and antibiotic agents.

Continuously Variable, Wavelength-Independent Polarization Rotator, Florencio Hernandez, David Hagan Nov 2002

Continuously Variable, Wavelength-Independent Polarization Rotator, Florencio Hernandez, David Hagan

UCF Patents

A useful optical device to provide continuously variable rotation of polarization of linearly polarized light in a wavelength-independent manner. This device features a cell of twisted nematic liquid crystal sandwiched between an input window and a rotatable output window, both with surfaces prepared so as to orient the nematic liquid crystal molecules. This optical device has different applications such as: variable-angle polarization rotator; using broad band polarizers as an energy attenuator; working in both cases as a wavelength independent and temporal pulse width independent device. The low cost, the very wide field of view, the wavelength and pulse width independence, …

For Lima Has Taken The White Veil., Mark Hayden Foster Nov 2002

For Lima Has Taken The White Veil., Mark Hayden Foster

Theses and Dissertations

This creative dissertation is a multifaceted meditation on technological civilization circa 2000, from the imagined perspective o f an archaeologist/linguist writing some eight hundred years in the future, as well as his grandson writing two generations later. The Andes-born protagonist looks back on a career during which he has led efforts to reconstruct the English language and the cultural ambience o f a dimly remembered and heavily mythologized “Dosmil” (a contraction of Spanish “Dos Mil” for the year 2000), beginning with excavation of newspaper and magazine fragments found in the one-time English speaking country o f Belize. In a world …

Antioxidant Defense In Exercised Skeletal Muscle Of The Aging -Delayed Ames Dwarf Mouse., Mark Andrew Romanick Nov 2002

Antioxidant Defense In Exercised Skeletal Muscle Of The Aging -Delayed Ames Dwarf Mouse., Mark Andrew Romanick

Theses and Dissertations

The Free Radical Theory of Aging is considered to offer a viable explanation for the phenomenon of the aging process. The rate of aging according to this concept depends on an organism’s ability to control oxidative stress within its cellular environment. The experiments in this study center around the Ames dwarf mouse, a mammalian model of aging that has demonstrated both extended life span and heightened antioxidant defense, and skeletal muscle, a tissue whose function is significantly affected under the influence of aging. Hindlimb skeletal muscle from dwarf and wild type mice at different ages was tested for its antioxidant …
