Impacts Of Extension Education On Improving Residential Stormwater Quality: Monitoring Results, Michael E. Dietz, John C. Clausen, Glenn S. Warner, Karen K. Filchak
Journal of Extension
The project reported in this article evaluated whether stormwater quality could be improved by educating homeowners and implementing best management practices in a suburban neighborhood. Nitrogen, phosphorus, and bacteria levels from two watersheds were compared using the paired watershed approach. Resident surveys, property site assessments, soil tests, and water quality and quantity monitoring were conducted. A x2-analysis of survey data indicated no significant changes in measured behavior. Significant (p=0.01) reductions in NO3-N and fecal coliform bacteria concentrations occurred; however, total nitrogen concentrations did not change significantly.

Insect herbivory is common, but the conditions under which it reduces the fitness and population size of plants remain poorly understood. We quantified population-level impacts of floral herbivory by specialized insects on cobweb thistle (Cirsium occidentale var. occidentale) in a California coastal dune ecosystem, and then compared these demographic effects to those published for Platte thistle (Cirsium canescens) in similarly designed exclusion experiments in the continental sand dune ecosystem in the Great Plains. As a separate test of the strength of the seed-to-seedling linkage, we quantified seedling establishment rates in seed addition plots and compared these …

The NCRP has recently defined RBE values and a new quantity (Gy-Eq) for use in estimation of deterministic effects in space shielding and operations. The NCRP's RBE for neutrons is left ambiguous and not fully defined. In the present report we will suggest a complete definition of neutron RBE consistent with the NCRP recommendations and evaluate attenuation properties of deterministic effects (Gy-Eq) in comparison with other dosimetric quantities.

Using Culturally And Linguistically Appropriate Assessments To Ensure That American Indian And Alaska Native Students Recieve The Special Education Programs And Services They Need, John W. Tippeconnic Iii, Susan C. Faircloth
Disabilities
The American Indian and Alaska Native Education Research Agenda (Research Agenda Working Group, Strang & von Glatz, 2001) represents the most recent formal call for research leading to improved assessments for American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) students with special learning needs. Similar calls were recorded at hearings and published in commissioned papers in the early 1990s (Cahape, 1993; Johnson, 1991). The disproportionate number of AI/AN students receiving special education services and identified as limited English proficient (LEP) indicates an ongoing need for the research. This Digest briefly reviews the legislation and literature pertaining to the influence of language and …

Census As A Techology Of Empire, David W. Darrow
Census As A Techology Of Empire, David W. Darrow
History Faculty Publications
A census is an example of the social construction of knowledge and the politics of measurement. Measuring people assumes a political significance because it entails converting heterogeneous populations into numbers—stable pieces of knowledge that can be easily combined and manipulated. In constructing such numerical representations, census officials claim to be creating an objective portrait of the population. Censuses, however, also contribute to something less tangible by playing a key role in the creation of what Benedict Anderson has termed an “imagined community.” General censuses provide states with a unique opportunity to unify space and populations with a single instrument. Furthermore, …

Journal of Medical Education
Strategies In The Development Of Customised Multimedia Learning Resources In The Teaching Of Physiology, Mohd Afandi Muhamad
Strategies In The Development Of Customised Multimedia Learning Resources In The Teaching Of Physiology, Mohd Afandi Muhamad
Journal of Medical Education
Simulation of physiological processes has often been used in teaching concepts on physiological mechanisms of action. For example, the simulation of action potential generation by numerical solutions of the Hodgkin-Huxley membrane equations has often been used to describe the processes of impulse generation. Based on a set of phenomenological equations, the model accurately realised the impulse trajectory of the squid giant axon. However, though highly realistic, numerical integration of stiff differential equations are often unwieldy, processor-intensive and not patricularly suitable for the purpose of teaching basic concepts. Development of simulations based on manipulation of graphical objects (sprites) or animation are …

Problem-Based Learning In Physiology:A Survey Of Department Heads In Medical Schools In Taiwan, Ying-Tung Lau
Journal of Medical Education
The amount of knowledge in the basic sciences has grown so much in recent years that the increase of course hours to cover them is near the limit. Problem-based learning (PBL) has been discussed, promoted, and implemented as an alternative or supplemental curriculum by several medical schools in Taiwan. Most medical schools have already adapted curriculum reform with varying amounts of small group-centered case discussions in addition to the traditional lecture-centered classroom teaching in the basic sciences including physiology. To assess the current situation of physiology teaching, we have surveyed the department heads with a questionnaire concerning the present implementation …
