Convergent Demographic Effects Of Insect Attack On Related Thistles In Coastal Vs. Continental Dunes, John L. Maron, Julie K. Combs, Svata M. Louda
School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
Insect herbivory is common, but the conditions under which it reduces the fitness and population size of plants remain poorly understood. We quantified populationlevel impacts of floral herbivory by specialized insects on cobweb thistle (Cirsium occidentale var. occidentale) in a California coastal dune ecosystem, and then compared these demographic effects to those published for Platte thistle (Cirsium canescens) in similarly designed exclusion experiments in the continental sand dune ecosystem in the Great Plains. As a separate test of the strength of the seed-to-seedling linkage, we quantified seedling establishment rates in seed addition plots and compared these …
Contrasting Patterns Of Divergence In Quantitative Traits And Neutral Dna Markers: Analysis Of Clinal Variation, Jay F. Storz
Contrasting Patterns Of Divergence In Quantitative Traits And Neutral Dna Markers: Analysis Of Clinal Variation, Jay F. Storz
Jay F. Storz Publications
Clinal variation in quantitative traits is often attributed to the effects of spatially varying selection. However, identical patterns can be produced by the interplay between purely stochastic processes (i.e. drift in combination with spatially restricted gene flow). One means of distinguishing between adaptive and nonadaptive causes of geographical variation is to compare relative levels of between population divergence in quantitative traits and neutral DNA markers. Such comparisons can be used to test whether levels of trait divergence attributable to additive genetic effects (as measured by QST) exceed null expectations based on the level of divergence at neutral marker …
Integrating Visualization Into The Modeling Of Business Simulations, Victor Perotti, Tom F. Pray
Integrating Visualization Into The Modeling Of Business Simulations, Victor Perotti, Tom F. Pray
Articles
This article demonstrates the advantages of using visualization as part of the modeling process. Several examples are given to show how visualization can help developers to more completely understand the range of behaviors for their algorithms. Specifically, the Cobb Douglas function and Gold Pray demand system are examined using a tool that combines mathematical modeling with visualization capabilities.

Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The objective of this thesis was to apply what was learned from Six Sigma while working for General Electric, towards real applications to improve processes. Two manufacturing problems were targeted. One of the issues dealt with variation, in an assembly process, which caused a large amount of missed opportunities. The other issue was based on defects caused by a reflector coating process that was creating haze and affecting lumens generated by the lamp. While analyzing the missed opportunity issue, a DMAIC approach was followed, measuring the collected data and analyzing the variation and mean of the processes by the use …

Satisfaction Of Orthognathic Surgical Patients In A Malaysian Population, K.K. Siow, S.T. Ong, C.B. Lian, Wei Cheong Ngeow
Research Publications (2000 to 2005)
Thirty-one patients treated at the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Malaya, were assessed for their satisfaction following orthognathic surgery. The female to male ratio was 22:9 with an age range of 17 to 36. Almost all patients (97) listed appearance as one of their rationales for surgery. More males (78) than females (59) wanted functional improvement, while more females (91) than males (33) hoped for improvement in self-confidence. All patients reported esthetic improvement while 68 each reported improvement in mastication and self-confidence. Slightly more than half (52) chose esthetic improvement as the single most important factor resulting in satisfaction. Almost …

“Private” Crime In Public Housing: Violent Victimization, Fear Of Crime And Social Isolation Among Women Public Housing Residents, Claire M. Renzetti, Shana L. Maier
CRVAW Faculty Journal Articles
Although public housing is typically associated with high crime rates, little research has been done on fear of crime or violent victimization experiences among public housing residents. Moreover, there are few studies that look specifically at women’s fear of crime or violent victimization experiences in public housing, despite the fact that women constitute the majority of public housing residents. These issues were examined in the present study through interviews with female public housing residents in Camden, New Jersey (NJ). The interviews reveal high rates of violent victimization, especially at the hands of intimates and acquaintances. Fear of crime is also …

Nebraska's Sandhill Crane Population, Past, Present, And Future, Paul A. Johnsgard
Nebraska Bird Review
Although the spring concentrations of Sandhill Cranes in Nebraska's Platte Valley are now an avian phenomenon known nationwide, a general appreciation and inventory of this unique concentration of birds has only been attempted in the last few decades. I am often asked how long this largest of all crane concentrations has been occurring in the Platte Valley, and why it has developed only there. Here I will try to summarize the little-known history of this marvelous assemblage, but not dwell on the ecological reasons for it. The latter are now generally well understood to revolve around abundant spring food supplies …

A New Species Of The Beetle Genus Brachypsectra From The Dominican Republic, With Fossil Connections (Coleoptera: Brachypsectridae), Robert E. Woodruff
Insecta Mundi
With the description of Brachypsectra vivafosile n. sp., from the Cabo Rojo desert area of Hispaniola, the beetle family Brachypsectridae now contains 4 described species. The family was originally known from the Dominican Republic by Miocene amber fossils of larvae. Genitalia are illustrated for the first time for the family. Relationships of the family within the Elateroidea are briefly discussed.

Parajulid Milliped Studies V. The Genera Pseudojulus Bollman And Arvechambus Causey (Parajulinae: Aniulini), Rowland M. Shelley
Insecta Mundi
The parajulid milliped genus Pseudojulus Bollman comprises four species: P. obtectus (Bollman), P. paynei (Hoffman), n. comb., and P. carolinensis and P. coastalis, new species; Arvechambus Causey comprises two species, A. hummi and A. weeinsi, both by Causey. Georgiulus Hoffman is placed in synonymy under Pseudojulus; G. hubrichti Hoffman is placed under P.paynei; and A. australis Causey is placed under A. hummi . The genera are sympatric in north Florida and southern Georgia, but Pseudojulus extends northward to coastal South Carolina and south central North Carolina, and westward to Alabama west of Mobile Bay. Both genera belong …
