Does Increasing Daylength Control Seasonal Changes In Clutch Sizes Of Northern Pintails (Ana Acuta)?, Gary Krapu, Glen Sergeant, Alison Perkins Jan 2002

Does Increasing Daylength Control Seasonal Changes In Clutch Sizes Of Northern Pintails (Ana Acuta)?, Gary Krapu, Glen Sergeant, Alison Perkins

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

We evaluated spatiotemporal variation in clutch sizes of Northern Pintails (pintails; Anas acuta) nesting in California (1985 to 1996), North Dakota (1982 to 1985), Saskatchewan (1982 to 1985) and Alaska (1991 to 1993) to determine whether seasonal declines in clutch size varied in ways that were consistent with a controlling influence of increasing day length. Pintails began nesting in mid-March in California, mid-April in North Dakota and Saskatchewan, and mid-May in Alaska. Observed durations of nesting were 70 ± 2.6 days (SE) in California, 60 ± 6.3 days in North Dakota, 66 ± 1.3 days in Saskatchewan, and 42 …

Cellular Tropisms And Co-Receptor Usage Of Hiv-1 Isolates From Vertically Infected Children With Neurological Abnormalities And Rapid Disease Progression, Micheline Mccarthy, Jun He, Denise Auger, Rebeca Geffin, Cecilia Hutto, Charles Wood, Gwendolyn Scott Jan 2002

Cellular Tropisms And Co-Receptor Usage Of Hiv-1 Isolates From Vertically Infected Children With Neurological Abnormalities And Rapid Disease Progression, Micheline Mccarthy, Jun He, Denise Auger, Rebeca Geffin, Cecilia Hutto, Charles Wood, Gwendolyn Scott

Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications

The longitudinal evolution of HIV-1 phenotypes was studied in a cohort of six vertically infected children with early onset and rapid progression of clinical disease. Among 30 viral isolates obtained from peripheral blood, tropisms for both human blood-derived cells (macrophages, T-lymphocytes), and for human neural (brain-derived) cells (microglia, astrocytes) were determined, as was chemokine co-receptor usage. All children harbored from birth macrophage-tropic isolates using the CCR5 co-receptor. Two children later developed T-cell tropic isolates with CXCR4 and CCR3 usage. While all six patients developed neurological abnormalities, only three produced neural cell tropic isolates, which used CCR5. However, early and persistent …

Introduction: Charlotte Perkins Gilman On The Symbolism And Sociology Of Clothing, Michael R. Hill, Mary Jo Deegan Jan 2002

Introduction: Charlotte Perkins Gilman On The Symbolism And Sociology Of Clothing, Michael R. Hill, Mary Jo Deegan

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

In The Dress of Women, Charlotte Perkins Gilman presents a nonfiction analysis of the symbolism and sociology of clothing. Originally published in Gilman's monthly journal, The Forerunner, in 1915, The Dress of Women was serialized, month by month, at the same time as Gilman's well-known novel, Herland, and a year prior to Gilman's companion work, With Her In Ourland: Sequel to Herland. The Dress of Women, published here for the first time in book form, is a lively, nonfiction guidebook to many of the gender issues presented in Gilman's Herland/Ourland saga and provides Gilman's intellectual, philosophical, and sociological insight into …

Model Risks And Surplus Management Under A Stochastic Interest Rate Process, Jennifer L. Wang, Rachel J. Huang Jan 2002

Model Risks And Surplus Management Under A Stochastic Interest Rate Process, Jennifer L. Wang, Rachel J. Huang

Journal of Actuarial Practice (1993–2006)

This paper uses simulations to explore the effects of incorrectly identifying the underlying interest rate process on assets, liabilities, and surplus levels. We show that mismodeling the interest rate (called model risk) could not only lead to a misstatement of the company's surplus, but could also cause a mismatch between the company's assets and liabilities. Our simulations demonstrate that three aspects of interest rates affect model risk: (i) volatility, (ii) level of long-term interest rate, and (iii) the speed at which the drift rate adjusts. We conclude that asset-liability managers should not ignore the impact of the model risks, regardless …

Land Use And Ceramic Distributions In Western Rough Cilicia, Turkey, Jennifer Ferrell Jan 2002

Land Use And Ceramic Distributions In Western Rough Cilicia, Turkey, Jennifer Ferrell

Nebraska Anthropologist

The Rough Cilicia Survey Project (RCSP) has been collecting data on the southern Mediterranean coast of Turkey (known as Rough Ci/icia) since 1996. This paper is a preliminary analysis of how the architectural and ceramic data collected by the survey team may be utilized. It is theorized here that the frequency of certain ceramic types may be linked to amount of architecture. However, this paper is not meant to be conclusive, but is rather a starting point for future studies of this data.

Reliability Assessment Of Surface Archaeological Survey Results From Western Rough Cilicia, Turkey, Melissa Kruse Jan 2002

Reliability Assessment Of Surface Archaeological Survey Results From Western Rough Cilicia, Turkey, Melissa Kruse

Nebraska Anthropologist

Surface archaeological data provides a wealth of readily available and easily accessible information about past human behavior and settlement systems. It is important that survey results of suiface remains be recorded accurately and provide reliable information for interpretation of regional artifact distributions, density, and variations of the archeological record. A resurvey methodology was developed to assess the reliability of results of the Rough Cilicia Archaeological Survey along the coast of southern Turkey. Analysis employed statistical quantification and an overview of factors effecting reliability of surface survey results. The resulting duplicated documents of the same suiface record at different points in …

Shape-Based Change Detection And Information Mining In Remote Sensing, Jiang Li, Ram M. Narayanan Jan 2002

Shape-Based Change Detection And Information Mining In Remote Sensing, Jiang Li, Ram M. Narayanan

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

Change detection is an important application of remote sensing. This paper presents our approach to retrieve and represent interesting shapes in the remotely sensed imagery using supervised classification, edge detection, and polygonal approximation techniques, and to compare the shape similarity by a computationally efficient metric. The experiments were conducted on a time series of calibrated and registered Landsat MSS images, covering the scene of the lakes at the western Nebraska. The results show the effectiveness of the shape-based change detection approach, which is potentially useful for specific applications such as the study of the lake change response to short or …

Institutional Transformation And Change: Insights For Faculty Developers, Peter D. Eckel Jan 2002

Institutional Transformation And Change: Insights For Faculty Developers, Peter D. Eckel

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

This chapter presents a series of insights about the process of institutional change and how leaders might implement it. Since the majority of energy goes into what the institution should do, little attention in higher education is given to how institutions should go about change. Based upon six years of work with 24 diverse institutions working on a range of change agendas in two projects, this chapter presents some conceptualizations of change and offers some language to discuss the type of intended change that might be useful for faculty developers and other campus leaders. It identifies three key elements in …

A Brief History Of Educational Development: Implications For Teachers And Developers, Richard G. Tiberius Jan 2002

A Brief History Of Educational Development: Implications For Teachers And Developers, Richard G. Tiberius

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

An historical review of the practice of educational development identified four belief systems about teaching and learning that shape the practice. Each system is characterized by an assumption about the teacher’s role: content expert; performer, who makes learning happen; facilitator, who encourages learning through interaction; and helper, whose relationship with learners is a vehicle for learning. The good news is that even teachers who are limited to only one of these belief systems can be successful. On the other hand, developers must have an appreciation for more than one belief system if they are to be successful at helping teachers.

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

This chapter describes the results of a research study of University of California, Berkeley’s annual seminar for faculty teaching with Graduate Student Instructors (GSIs). It demonstrates that such a faculty development activity can have a significant impact not only on faculty mentoring of GSIs but also on faculty teaching, attitudes, and behaviors vis-à-vis teaching and learning in higher education. The chapter presents an overview of the seminar, a description of the format and methodology of the research project, and qualitative and quantitative outcomes.

Evaluating Teaching Workshops: Beyond The Satisfaction Survey, David G. Way, Virleen M. Carlson, Susan C. Piliero Jan 2002

Evaluating Teaching Workshops: Beyond The Satisfaction Survey, David G. Way, Virleen M. Carlson, Susan C. Piliero

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

Workshops are a prevalent approach to fostering instructional development for both teaching assistants (TAs) and faculty. Frequently we evaluate workshops by asking participants to fill out a satisfaction-oriented survey at the end. To what degree do such surveys evaluate adequately the workshop’s long-term effect on participants’ learning? The authors explicate earlier investigative work on transfer of training, and present the results of a follow-up survey to two groups of TA workshop participants designed to assess the degree to which conditions theoretically conducive to the transfer of training exist at their institution.

Operational Diversity: Saying What We Mean, Doing What We Say, Wayne Jacobson, Jim Borgford-Parnell, Katherine Frank, Michael Peck, Lois Reddick

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

Diversity issues, ranging from individual learning styles to institutional equity, are central to teaching and learning, but identifying and addressing these issues is a formidable task. At the Center for Instructional Development and Research (CIDR), our staff is gaining ground on this work through the Inclusive Practices Portfolio, a collaborative forum for documenting, sharing, and supporting our individual and organizational diversity initiatives. The process of developing the center’s portfolio and the portfolio itself are mechanisms for change within the center and a model far change at our institution and beyond.

Teaching Through Discussion As The Exercise Of Disciplinary Power, Stephen D. Brookfield Jan 2002

Teaching Through Discussion As The Exercise Of Disciplinary Power, Stephen D. Brookfield

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

The French philosopher Michel Foucault spent much of his lifetime analyzing the way in which power flows through all human interactions, including those of discussion groups within higher education. His analysis of disciplinary power and surveillance is directly applicable to the practice of discussion-based teaching.

Immobilization Of Pseudomonas Cepacia Lipase By Sol-Gel Entrapment And Its Application In The Hydrolysis Of Soybean Oil, Hossein Noureddini, X Gao, S Joshi, P R. Wagner Jan 2002

Immobilization Of Pseudomonas Cepacia Lipase By Sol-Gel Entrapment And Its Application In The Hydrolysis Of Soybean Oil, Hossein Noureddini, X Gao, S Joshi, P R. Wagner

Papers in Biomaterials

The immobilization of Lipase PS from Pseudomonas cepacia by entrapment within a chemically inert hydrophobic sol-gel support was studied. The gel-entrapped lipase was prepared by the hydrolysis of tetramethoxysilane (TMOS) with methyltrimeth-oxysilane (MTMS), isobutyltrimethoxysilane (iso-BTMS), and n-butyltrimethoxysilane. The immobilized lipase was subsequently used in the hydrolysis of soybean oil to determine its activity, recyclability, and thermostability. The biocatalyst so prepared was equal to or better than the free enzyme in its hydrolytic activity. The catalytic activity of the entrapped lipase strongly depended on the type of precursor that was used in its preparation. The lipase entrapped within TMOS/iso-BTMS showed the …

Inventions, Industry Standards, And Intellectual Property, Mark R. Patterson Jan 2002

Inventions, Industry Standards, And Intellectual Property, Mark R. Patterson

Faculty Scholarship

When an industry standard incorporates a patented invention, the demand for products that comply with the standard has two components. Some of the demand may be for the inherent technical advantages of the invention; the patentee is generally entitled to revenues attributable to this demand. But some of the demand is for the benefits of standardization, such as interoperability, and the patentee is not entitled to revenues attributable to this demand. From this point, the article draws two conclusions. First, the amounts to which a patentee is entitled, either in litigation or in licensing negotiations, should be calculated by determining …

United States Human Rights Policy In The 21st Century In An Age Of Multilateralism Respondent, Catherine Powell Jan 2002

United States Human Rights Policy In The 21st Century In An Age Of Multilateralism Respondent, Catherine Powell

Faculty Scholarship

Professor Harold Koh's thoughtful article, A United States Human Rights Policy for the 21st Century, 46 ST. Louis U. L.J. 293 (2002), ends with the observation that "globalization has both sinister and constructive faces."' Indeed, we live in a world that is increasingly interdependent. Even some of those opposed to the project of globalization ironically depend on the tools of globalization to undermine it. Consider the terrorists who hijacked airplanes on September 11, 2001 and flew them into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, killing thousands of innocent civilians from many different nations. The terrorists used the Internet and …

Consider two remarkable places: Harlem, New York and Old Havana, Cuba. These are two different neighborhoods, cities, countries, political systems, economies, and cultures. Yet these two neighborhoods are bound together by a common phenomenon unlimited by geography or differences in political and economic systems. The global prosperity of the last two decades has created historic opportunities to usher in development and revitalization efforts in neglected urban areas across the world! Governments, along with the private sector, have moved capital back to cities or neighborhoods that became endangered from years of disinvestment, lack of economic opportunities, and inadequate access to essential …

A 1500-Year Record Of Climatic And Environmental Change In Elk Lake, Clearwater County, Minnesota Ii: Geochemistry, Mineralogy, And Stable Isotopes, Walter E. Dean Jan 2002

A 1500-Year Record Of Climatic And Environmental Change In Elk Lake, Clearwater County, Minnesota Ii: Geochemistry, Mineralogy, And Stable Isotopes, Walter E. Dean

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Most of the sediment components that have accumulated in Elk Lake, Clearwater County, northwestern Minnesota, over the past 1500 years are authigenic or biogenic (CaCO3, biogenic SiO2, organic matter, iron and manganese oxyhydroxides, and iron phosphate) and are delivered to the sediment–water interface on a seasonal schedule where they are preserved as distinct annual laminae (varves). The annual biogeochemical cycles of these components are causally linked through the ‘carbon pump’, and are recapitulated in longer-term cycles, most prominently with a periodicity of about 400 years. Organic carbon is fixed in the epilimnion by photosynthetic removal of …

Early Holocene Change In Atmospheric Circulation In The Northern Great Plains: An Upstreamview Of The 8.2 Ka Cold Event, Walter E. Dean, Richard M. Forester, J. Platt Bradbury Jan 2002

Early Holocene Change In Atmospheric Circulation In The Northern Great Plains: An Upstreamview Of The 8.2 Ka Cold Event, Walter E. Dean, Richard M. Forester, J. Platt Bradbury

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Elk Lake, in northwestern Minnesota, contains numerous proxy records of climatic and environmental change contained in varved sediments with annual resolution for the last 10,000 years. These proxies show that about 8200 calendar years ago (8.2 cal. ka; 7300 radiocarbon years) Elk Lake went froma well-stratified lake that was wind-protected in a boreal forest to a well-mixed lake in open prairie savanna receiving northwesterly wind-blown dust, probably from the dry floor of Lake Agassiz. This change in climate marks the initiation of the widely recognized mid-Holocene “altithermal” in central North America. The coincidence of this change with the so-called 8.2 …

Determination Of Melanterite-Rozenite And Chalcanthite-Bonattite Equilibria By Humidity Measurements At 0.1 Mpa, I-Ming Chou, R.R. Seal Ii, B.S. Hemingway Jan 2002

Determination Of Melanterite-Rozenite And Chalcanthite-Bonattite Equilibria By Humidity Measurements At 0.1 Mpa, I-Ming Chou, R.R. Seal Ii, B.S. Hemingway

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Melanterite (FeSO4•7H2O)-rozenite (FeSO4•4H2O) and chalcanthite (CuSO4•5H2O)-bonattite (CuSO4•3H2O) equilibria were determined by humidity measurements at 0.1 MPa. Two methods were used; one is the gas-flow-cell method (between 21 and 98 °C), and the other is the humidity buffer method (between 21 and 70 °C). The first method has a larger temperature uncertainty even though it is more efficient. With the aid of humidity buffers, which correspond to a series of saturated binary salt solutions, the second method yields reliable results as demonstrated by very tight …

Reconstruction Of Hydrological Changes And Response To Effective Moisture Variations From North-Central Usa Lake Sediments, Antje Schwalb, Walter E. Dean Jan 2002

Reconstruction Of Hydrological Changes And Response To Effective Moisture Variations From North-Central Usa Lake Sediments, Antje Schwalb, Walter E. Dean

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Ratios of the stable isotopes of oxygen and carbon in benthic ostracodes and marl from cores taken from two lakes in north-central Minnesota reflect Holocene hydrological and vegetation changes. Oxygen isotopes show that Williams and Shingobee Lakes, located in the same watershed but with different positions along a hydrologic gradient, were connected before 9.8 ka as part of a larger lake, Lake Willobee. From 9.8–7.7 ka, the level of Lake Willobee fell as a result of glacial retreat and increasing evaporation, leaving small separated basins. Further decreases in lake level after 7.7 ka due to increasing aridity triggered the inflow …

Availability Of Food Resources, Distribution Of Invasive Species, And Conservation Of A Hawaiian Bird Along A Gradient Of Elevation, Paul C. Banko, Peter T. Oboyski, John W. Slotterback, Steven J. Dougill, Daniel M. Goltz, Luanne Johnson, Megan E. Laut Jan 2002

Availability Of Food Resources, Distribution Of Invasive Species, And Conservation Of A Hawaiian Bird Along A Gradient Of Elevation, Paul C. Banko, Peter T. Oboyski, John W. Slotterback, Steven J. Dougill, Daniel M. Goltz, Luanne Johnson, Megan E. Laut

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Aim

We evaluated how an elevation gradient affects: (1) the availability of food required by a specialist seed-eater, Loxioides bailleui Oustalet (Drepanidinae), or palila, and hence the distribution of this endangered Hawaiian bird, and (2) the distribution of alien threats to Loxioides populations, their primary foods, and their dry-forest habitat, and hence strategies for their conservation.

Location

We worked throughout the subalpine forest that encircles Mauna Kea Volcano, Hawai‘i Island, but we focused our studies mainly on the western slope between 2000 and 3000 m elevation, where the gradient of elevation was greatest and palila were most abundant.

Methods

We …
