Indo-Caribbean 'Local-Classical Music': A Unique Variant Of Hindustani Music, Peter L. Manuel
Indo-Caribbean 'Local-Classical Music': A Unique Variant Of Hindustani Music, Peter L. Manuel
Publications and Research
As cosmopolitan South Asians are well aware, several Indian performing arts, from Bharatanatyam to Bhangra, have come to flourish outside of India, especially as cultivated by non-resident Indians and Pakistanis. Most of these art forms, like Bharatanatyam, either adhere closely to models thriving in India itself, or else - like the British-based Bhangra - although differing from counterparts in India, are nevertheless familiar to interested urbanites in South Asia, who can buy recordings and cultivate an interest in them if they desire. Among the ethnic Indian populations of the Caribbean, a unique sort of Indian music has come to evolve …
Rediscovering Frédéric Chopin's "Trois Nouvelles Études", Qiao-Shuang Xian
Rediscovering Frédéric Chopin's "Trois Nouvelles Études", Qiao-Shuang Xian
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Frédéric Chopin’s Trois Nouvelles Études (Three New Études) were composed in 1839 at the request of François Fétis and Ignaz Moshceles for inclusion in a new and elaborate piano teaching method. While these new studies are less dramatic and brilliant than Chopin’s two previous sets of Études, op. 10 and 25, they are no less concerned with expressive musical qualities and they are of equal artistic merit to any of Chopin’s earlier Études. The monograph’s five chapters deal with specific aspects of these works. Chapter One traces the historical background of the Three Nouvelles Études. Chapter Two is devoted to …

The Symphony In America: Maurice Abravanel, And The Utah Symphony Orchestra: The Battle For Classical Music, Alex D. Smith
The Symphony In America: Maurice Abravanel, And The Utah Symphony Orchestra: The Battle For Classical Music, Alex D. Smith
Theses and Dissertations
Between 1947 and 1979 the Utah Symphony Orchestra was transformed from an obscure, part-time, amateur orchestra into one of the major symphony orchestras in America. By 1947 the orchestra, which had begun as a Works Progress Administration organization, was barely hanging on. The symphony struggled to remain financially solvent, performing only a few concerts per year. Thirty-two years later the Utah Symphony Orchestra was one of the most prestigious musical ensembles in the country— receiving rave reviews from critics around the world, touring extensively, and with more than a hundred albums to its credit. The remarkable growth of the Utah …
Ethnography And The Idealized Accounts Of Science In Law, David S. Caudill
Ethnography And The Idealized Accounts Of Science In Law, David S. Caudill
San Diego Law Review
n Part I, I confirm the idealizations of science in law and their implications for legal scholarship and practice. In Part II, I describe the ethnographic method used by science studies scholars, with reference to my own ethnographic analysis of interviews with three neuroscientists. I conclude Part II by identifying various social aspects of science that comprise a complex picture of scientific activity. In Part ill, I discuss the implications of ethnomethodology for trial practice, including deposition analysis, Daubert-type hearings, cross-examination techniques, and drafting jury instructions. Part IV addresses anticipated criticisms of my arguments.
