Mobile Unity Schemas For Agent Coordination, Gruia-Catalin Roman, Jamie Payton Nov 2002

Mobile Unity Schemas For Agent Coordination, Gruia-Catalin Roman, Jamie Payton

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

Mobile UNITY refers to a notation system and proof logic initially designed to accommodate the special needs of the emerging field of mobile computing. The model allows one to define units of computation and mobility and the formal rules for coordination among them in a highly decoupled manner. In this paper, we reexamine the expressive power of the Mobile UNITY coordination constructs from a new perspective rooted in the notion that disciplined usage of a powerful formal model must rely on formally defined schemas. Several coordination schemas are introduced and formalized. They examine the relationship between Mobile UNITY and other …

A Long-Term Hydrologically-Based Data Set Of Land Surface Fluxes And States For The Conterminous United States, Edwin P. Maurer, A. W. Wood, J. C. Adam, Dennis P. Lettenmaier, B. Nijssen Nov 2002

A Long-Term Hydrologically-Based Data Set Of Land Surface Fluxes And States For The Conterminous United States, Edwin P. Maurer, A. W. Wood, J. C. Adam, Dennis P. Lettenmaier, B. Nijssen

Civil, Environmental and Sustainable Engineering

A frequently encountered difficulty in assessing model-predicted land–atmosphere exchanges of moisture and energy is the absence of comprehensive observations to which model predictions can be compared at the spatial and temporal resolutions at which the models operate. Various methods have been used to evaluate the land surface schemes in coupled models, including comparisons of model-predicted evapotranspiration with values derived from atmospheric water balances, comparison of model-predicted energy and radiative fluxes with tower measurements during periods of intensive observations, comparison of model-predicted runoff with observed streamflow, and comparison of model predictions of soil moisture with spatial averages of point observations. While …

Fermat, Schubert, Einstein, And Behrens-Fisher: The Probable Difference Between Two Means When Σ12≠ Σ22, Shlomo S. Sawilowsky

Theoretical and Behavioral Foundations of Education Faculty Publications

The history of the Behrens-Fisher problem and some approximate solutions are reviewed. In outlining relevant statistical hypotheses on the probable difference between two means, the importance of the Behrens- Fisher problem from a theoretical perspective is acknowledged, but it is concluded that this problem is irrelevant for applied research in psychology, education, and related disciplines. The focus is better placed on “shift in location” and, more importantly, “shift in location and change in scale” treatment alternatives.

Comprehensive Subgrade Deflection Acceptance Criteria - Executive Summary, James Crovetti Nov 2002

Comprehensive Subgrade Deflection Acceptance Criteria - Executive Summary, James Crovetti

Transportation Research Center: Subgrade Deflection Studies

This executive summary presents a summary of the findings of all study phases conducted to develop recommendations for the development of specifications for subgrade acceptance based on measured deflections. The rolling wheel deflectomter (RWD), portable truck-mounted deflection measurement systems, and dynamic cone penetrometer (DCP) were utilized on numerous subgrade construction projects between the 1998 and 2001 construction seasons. Comparative nuclear density and soil stiffness gauge readings were also obtained at selected locations on many of the included construction projects.

The research findings indicate that deflection test results may be appropriate for identifying areas of poor in-place stability within constructed subgrades. …

Designing Interdisciplinary Approaches To Problem Solving Into Computer Languages, Daniel E. Cooke, Vladik Kreinovich, Joseph E. Urban Nov 2002

Designing Interdisciplinary Approaches To Problem Solving Into Computer Languages, Daniel E. Cooke, Vladik Kreinovich, Joseph E. Urban

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Many interdisciplinary design efforts require the involvement of computer scientists because of the complexity of the problem solving tools available for the projects. This paper demonstrates how appropriate language design can place high level languages in the hands of scientists and engineers, thus providing a more automated approach to problem solving that may reduce the amount of computer scientist involvement. The language SequenceL serves as an example of this approach.
