Communicating Space And Time Perception And Ideology In Online Texts, Nava. Dushi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

This thesis emerges from the realization of the paradox that lies beneath online technology which promises to change the way we think, yet penetrates our lives by employing a systematic simulation of our most basic cognitive skills. In order to understand this paradox in terms of space and time, the research examines the ways in which time and space are communicated on two disparate Internet websites. The assembled data are analyzed using an interdisciplinary approach that leads to a textual analysis based in theories of semiotics. The study finds that the Internet is fundamentally framed in spatial terms. The space …

Communication Protocol For Wireless Sensor Networks, Edgar Herbert Jr Callaway Jan 2002

Communication Protocol For Wireless Sensor Networks, Edgar Herbert Jr Callaway

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Many wireless network applications, such as wireless computing on local area networks, employ data throughput as a primary performance metric. The data throughput on such networks has therefore been increasing in recent years. However, there are other potential wireless network applications, such as industrial monitoring and control, consumer home automation, and military remote sensing, that have relaxed throughput requirements, often measured in bits/day. Such networks have power consumption and cost as primary performance metrics, rather than data throughput, and have been called wireless sensor networks. This work describes a physical layer, a data link layer, and a network layer design …

Comparative Study Of Attribute Selection Techniques For Cbr-Based Software Quality Classification Models, Laurent Quoc Viet Nguyen Jan 2002

Comparative Study Of Attribute Selection Techniques For Cbr-Based Software Quality Classification Models, Laurent Quoc Viet Nguyen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

To achieve high reliability in software-based systems, software metrics-based quality classification models have been explored in the literature. However, the collection of software metrics may be a hard and long process, and some metrics may not be helpful or may be harmful to the classification models, deteriorating the models' accuracies. Hence, methodologies have been developed to select the most significant metrics in order to build accurate and efficient classification models. Case-Based Reasoning is the classification technique used in this thesis. Since it does not provide any metric selection mechanisms, some metric selection techniques were studied. In the context of CBR, …

Design Of An Adaptive Nonlinear Controller For An Autonomous Underwater Vehicle Equipped With A Vectored Thruster, Yannick. Morel

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

The tasks Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) are expected to perform are becoming more and more challenging. Thus, to be able to address such tasks, we implemented a high maneuverability propulsion system: a vectored thruster. The design of a vehicle equipped with such a propulsion system will be presented, from a mechanical, electronic and software point of view. The motion control of the resulting system is fairly complex, and no suitable controller is available in the literature. Accordingly, we will present the derivation of a novel tracking controller, whose adaptive properties will compensate for the lack of knowledge of the system's …

Design And Construction Of A High-Sensitivity Capacitance-Based Quartz Dilatometer, George Emerson Timmins Jan 2002

Design And Construction Of A High-Sensitivity Capacitance-Based Quartz Dilatometer, George Emerson Timmins

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

A high sensitivity capacitance dilatometer constructed solely of fused quartz was designed to study phase transitions of sub-millimeter sized samples from 4 to 300 K. The minimal thermal expansion contribution from quartz reduced the overall magnitude of the background by a factor of 10. As a consequence, the increased resolution of the data provided greater sensitivity than has been capable with metallic capacitance dilatometers. A one millimeter long single crystal of La1.67Sr0.33NiO 4 was analyzed from 80 to 300 K. Our highly reproducible measurements reveal phase transitions at similar temperatures to those observed with magnetization and specific heat measurement techniques.

Dsp Implementation Of Turbo Decoder Using The Modified-Log-Map Algorithm, Zeeshan Haneef Khan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

The design of any communication receiver needs to addresses the issues of operating under the lowest possible signal-to-noise ratio. Among various algorithms that facilitate this objective are those used for iterative decoding of two-dimensional systematic convolutional codes in applications such as spread spectrum communications and Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) detection. A main theme of any decoding schemes is to approach the Shannon limit in signal-to-noise ratio. All these decoding algorithms have various complexity levels and processing delay issues. Hence, the optimality depends on how they are used in the system. The technique used in various decoding algorithms is termed …

Development Of An Efficient General Purpose Cable Model And Simulation For Marine Applications, Branka. Radanovic Jan 2002

Development Of An Efficient General Purpose Cable Model And Simulation For Marine Applications, Branka. Radanovic

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

This work develops, a general numerical model and efficient integration routine to calculate the response of the underwater cable that connects the Lockheed Martin remote minehunting vehicle to its variable depth sensor. The general model is developed from continuous cable equations that are discretized using a finite element method with linear elements. The resulting discrete system of equations is nonlinear and stiff. Thus, we chose the implicit Generalized-alpha method to integrate these equations because it possess numerical dissipation. This integration routine is coded into a C++ based numerical simulation and the results and efficiency were compared with the results and …

Dynamic Routing In Grid-Connected Networks, Zhen. Jiang Jan 2002

Dynamic Routing In Grid-Connected Networks, Zhen. Jiang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

This dissertation describes the effect of collection and distribution of fault information on routing capacity in grid-connected networks with faults occurring during the routing process. The grid-connected network, such as hypercubes, 2-D meshes, and 3-D meshes, is one of the simplest and least expensive structures to build a system using hundreds and even thousands of processors. In such a system, efficient communication among the processors is critical to performance. Hence, the routing of messages is an important issue that needs to be addressed. As the number of nodes in the networks increases, the chance of failure also increases. The complex …

Energy-Efficient Protocols For Wireless Sensor Networks, Kemei. Du Jan 2002

Energy-Efficient Protocols For Wireless Sensor Networks, Kemei. Du

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

This thesis describes energy-conserving techniques in wireless sensor networks. In wireless sensor networks the sensor nodes gather information and send the information to a base station periodically. Some important messages need be broadcast to all nodes. Due to the limited battery capacity in sensor nodes, energy efficiency is becoming a major challenging problem in these power-constrained networks. Chain-based protocols construct a transmission chain connecting all nodes to save energy dissipation of data transmission. We propose a multiple-chain scheme for all-to-all broadcasting. Furthermore, we develop an energy-efficient chain-construction algorithm which uses a sequence of insertions to minimize the energy consumption along …

Empirical Study Of Resource-Based Selection Of Rule-Based Software Quality Classification Models, Angela. Herzberg Jan 2002

Empirical Study Of Resource-Based Selection Of Rule-Based Software Quality Classification Models, Angela. Herzberg

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Software managers are under pressure to deliver reliable and high quality software, within a limited time and budget. To achieve this goal, they can be aided by different modeling techniques that allow them to predict the quality of software, so that the improvement efforts can be directed to software modules that are more likely to be fault-prone. Also, different projects have different resource availability constraints, and being able to select a model that is suitable for a specific resource constraint allows software managers to direct enhancement techniques more effectively and efficiently. In our study, we use Rule-Based Modeling ( RBM) …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Anyone who is a participant in today's workforce can attest to the fact that change is a constant and that workplace changes are often brought about by new or upgraded technology, which often means that a worker may become accustomed to a particular system, only to discover that it will soon be replaced with a new one. Today's technology is often packaged in the form of an enterprise resource planning (ERP) system that revolutionizes the company's processes and brings about massive changes in the production of goods and services. These systems promise both the integration of different departments of a …

Building The Beaver And Lake Erie Canal: The Politics Of Public Improvements In Pennsylvania, 1783-1845., William David Mccarthy Jan 2002

Building The Beaver And Lake Erie Canal: The Politics Of Public Improvements In Pennsylvania, 1783-1845., William David Mccarthy

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Patterns of commerce and settlement in colonial America were shaped by watercourses and portages. Road building skills were primitive and boating represented the most effective means of moving bulk freight and passengers. Traders and frontiersmen leading the advance of European settlement into the Appalachian Mountains therefore adopted the shortest crossings between watersheds. Natural conditions in Pennsylvania did not promote an orderly advance westward and produced isolated clusters of settlement around Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, with small and widespread settlements in Northwest Pennsylvania. State leaders were hard pressed to define the limits of Pennsylvania until the end of the eighteenth century, and …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Edge punchout has been long recognized as the prevailing mode of structural failure in Continuously Reinforced Concrete Pavements (CRCP) and yet, has remained relatively unexplored and unexplained. The existing design and evaluation procedures for CRCP employ American Association of State Highway Transportation Officials (AASHTO) equations for the jointed concrete pavements and the Equivalent Single Axle Load (ESAL) approach that will neither predict nor address edge punchouts. A comprehensive procedure for prediction of CRCP structural deterioration based on fundamental mechanical principles was developed in this study. This procedure directly considers the key design factors and site conditions affecting formation of edge …
