Creation Of A Bacterial Mutagenicity Assay Highly Sensitive To Dialkylnitrosamines, Matthew Troy Cooper Jan 2002

Creation Of A Bacterial Mutagenicity Assay Highly Sensitive To Dialkylnitrosamines, Matthew Troy Cooper

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Although dialkylnitrosamines are environmentally significant carcinogens, the use of short-term bioassays to assess the mutagenic potential of these compounds remains problematic. The Ames test, a mutagenicity assay based on the reversion of Salmonella typhimurium histidine auxotrophs, is the most widely used bioassay in genetic toxicology, but the traditional Ames tester strains are largely insensitive to dialkylnitrosamine mutagenicity. I have constructed several mutagenicity tester strains that co-express combinations of full-length human cytochrome P450 2E1, rat cytochrome P450 reductase, and human cytochrome b5 in S. typhimurium lacking ogt and ada methyltransferases (YG7104ER, ogt-; and YG7108ER, ogt-, ada-). These new strains are susceptible …

Solvent-Resistant Nanofiltration Membranes: Separation Studies And Modeling, Dharmesh S. Bhanushali Jan 2002

Solvent-Resistant Nanofiltration Membranes: Separation Studies And Modeling, Dharmesh S. Bhanushali

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

The primary focus of the research is to extend the principles of Nanofiltration(NF) to non-aqueous systems using solvent-resistant NF membranes. Several differentlevels of interaction are introduced when organic solvents are used with polymericmembranes and thus quantification of polymer-solvent interactions is critical. Puresolvent permeation studies were conducted to understand the mechanism of solventtransport through polymeric membranes. Different membrane materials (hydrophilic andhydrophobic) as well as different solvents (polar and non-polar) were used for the study. For example, hexane flux at 13 bar through a hydrophobic silicone based NF membranewas ~ 0.6 x 10-4 cm3/cm2. s. and that through a hydrophilic aromatic polyamide based …

Simulation Study Of Multilane Selectivity Bank In Automotive Industry, Sachin G. Nagane Jan 2002

Simulation Study Of Multilane Selectivity Bank In Automotive Industry, Sachin G. Nagane

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

This study deals with a very common problem encountered in many automotive industries. Automotive companies try to level the production of different models over time based on the demands for these models in the market. In order to achieve this, they introduce a leveled stream of cars in the beginning of the production line. But because of many reasons this leveled stream gets disturbed in its course. In order to re-level the stream, buffers are used between the shops. One such buffer is called as selectivity bank and it sits between paint shop and assembly shop. This buffer receives a …

Pigs In Space: Ghosts, Gender And Sexuality In A Debate About Regulating Industrial Hog Farms In Kentucky, Mary E. Curran Jan 2002

Pigs In Space: Ghosts, Gender And Sexuality In A Debate About Regulating Industrial Hog Farms In Kentucky, Mary E. Curran

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

In 1997, Governor Paul Patton of Kentucky asked the state Cabinet of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection to develop administrative regulations for industrial hog farms in the state. The regulatory process has been contentious. From 1997 through 1998, the Cabinet held five public hearings to elicit comments on the proposed regulations. This study is designed to answer two questions. First, how, within parameters of participation established by the Kentucky Cabinet of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection, have participants in the debate deployed notions of risk to privilege certain gendered and sexualized farming identities, farming practices, and notions of rurality? Second, …

When Lawyers And Law Firms Invest In Their Corporate Clients’ Stock, Donald C. Langevoort Jan 2002

When Lawyers And Law Firms Invest In Their Corporate Clients’ Stock, Donald C. Langevoort

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

I will state my conclusion at the outset. I am not convinced that lawyers' investments in clients in lieu of fees are problematic enough from a conflicts standpoint that the rules of professional responsibility should treat them as presumptively inconsistent with the lawyer's fiduciary responsibility. Lawyers' investments in their clients do raise interesting and unsettling issues, but these issues are not qualitatively different from issues raised by many other norms or practices within the legal profession that also threaten lawyerly objectivity. Indeed, in contrast to some other practices, these fee arrangements can, in some respects, enhance objectivity, or at least …

A Tribute To Paul Szasz, Edith Brown Weiss

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

Throughout the world, Paul Szasz has garnered everyone's respect for his intellect, his uncompromising integrity, his innate sense of fairness, and his dedication. Paul treated everyone the same, whatever the nationality. He passionately believed in international law. Even in the last 20 months when he was ill, he continued to live and breathe the life of international law, flying repeatedly to Geneva, to Rio, to The Hague, to California, and elsewhere to advise on international negotiations for a framework convention to control tobacco or to present a paper. Paul was an inspiration to people around the world, young and old. …

A Goldilocks Account Of Judicial Review?, Mark V. Tushnet Jan 2002

A Goldilocks Account Of Judicial Review?, Mark V. Tushnet

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

According to Professor Christopher Eisgruber, judicial review of the sort embedded in United States constitutional practice is a practical mechanism for implementing the Constitution's commitment to self-government. "The justices ... make a distinctive contribution to representative democracy" because they are "better positioned [than elected officials] to represent the people's convictions about what is right." Judges can articulate "a conception of justice with which Americans in general [can] plausibly identify themselves. "

I will focus here on two themes in Professor Eisgruber's argument. The first theme can be found in many works of constitutional theory - the construction of a strong …

The essay is based on a survey of organizational change management practices in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Singapore which was conducted by the authors between 1999 - 2001 in collaboration with the Singapore Chinese Chamber of Commerce & Industry (SCCCI). The study was aimed at examining the adaptability and change readiness of Singapore’s SMEs and their owners vis-à-vis the rapidly changing external business environment, as exemplified by the process of economic globalization, intense competition, technology development and the Asian crisis. A total of 101 companies responded to the survey which revealed some surprising facts about the adaptability and …

Subsidence Hazards In Different Types Of Karst: Evolutionary And Speleogenetic Approach, Alexander Klimchouk Jan 2002

Subsidence Hazards In Different Types Of Karst: Evolutionary And Speleogenetic Approach, Alexander Klimchouk

International Journal of Speleology

The typology of karst, based on distinguishing the successive stages of general hydrogeological evolution, between which major boundary conditions and the overall circulation pattern change considerably, gives a natural clue, properly to classify and tie together karst breakdown settings, speleogenetic styles and breakdown development mechanisms. Subsidence hazards vary substantially between the different karst types so that classifying individual karst according to typology can provide an integrated general assessment. This provides a useful basis for selection and realization of region- and site-specific assessment schemes and management strategies. Intrastratal karst types, subjacent karst in particular, are most potent in generating subsidence problems. …

The Engineering Classification Of Karst With Respect To The Role And Influence Of Caves, Tony Waltham Jan 2002

The Engineering Classification Of Karst With Respect To The Role And Influence Of Caves, Tony Waltham

International Journal of Speleology

The engineering classification of karst defines various complexities of ground conditions, in terms of the hazards that they provide to potential construction. Karst is divided into five classes (from immature to extreme). The three key parameters within the classification are caves (size and extent), sinkholes (abundance and collapse frequency) and rockhead (profile and relief). As one component of karst, caves are a hazard to foundation integrity, though natural surface collapses over caves are extremely rare. A cave roof is normally stable under engineering loading where the roof thickness is greater than 70% of the cave width. Construction can proceed over …

Karst Breakdown Mechanisms From Observations In The Gypsum Caves Of The Western Ukraine: Implications For Subsidence Hazard Assessment, Alexander Klimchouk, Vjacheslav Andrejchuk Jan 2002

Karst Breakdown Mechanisms From Observations In The Gypsum Caves Of The Western Ukraine: Implications For Subsidence Hazard Assessment, Alexander Klimchouk, Vjacheslav Andrejchuk

International Journal of Speleology

The term karst breakdown is employed in this paper to denote the totality of processes and phenomena of gravitational and/or hydrodynamic destruction of the ceiling of a karst cavity and of the overlying sediments. It refers not only to the existence of a surface subsidence (collapse) feature but, first of all, to the “internal” (hidden in the subsurface) structures that precede development of a surface form. This study reports and discusses the results of direct mapping and examination of breakdown structures in the gypsum karst of the Western Ukraine, at the level of their origin, i.e. in caves. The accessibility …

Stability Appraisal Of The Medvedova Konta Pothole, Jože Kortnik Jan 2002

Stability Appraisal Of The Medvedova Konta Pothole, Jože Kortnik

International Journal of Speleology

Until 1956 the underground details of areas around Pokljuka were practically unknown due to the area’s non-karstic outward appearance. However, the presence of karst phenomena on this Alpine plain is undoubtedly indicated, primarily by the absence of a surface drainage network. A mathematical model was made of the Medvedova konta pothole, in which two different sets of material properties were used, corresponding to the Triassic limestone that forms the bedrock under the greater part of Pokljuka. The model simulates the gradual thinning of the ceiling of the underground hall, from the surface downwards, until its collapse. The paper presents a …

Karstology And The Opening Of Caves During Motorway Construction In The Karst Region Of Slovenia, Martin Knez, Tadej Slabe Jan 2002

Karstology And The Opening Of Caves During Motorway Construction In The Karst Region Of Slovenia, Martin Knez, Tadej Slabe

International Journal of Speleology

The nature of karst makes constructing a roadway across karst areas a complex task, which is why karstologists take part in motorway construction across Slovenia’s karst. Working with planners, karstologists select the best route on the basis of preliminary research. Then they carry out regular karstological monitoring of the construction, to study newly discovered karst phenomena, mostly caves, and also help builders overcome the challenges of karst in a way that will preserve nature as much as possible. During the recent construction of a section of motorway, more than three hundred caves were encountered within a sixty-kilometre stretch of road. …

Subsidence Hazards As A Consequence Of Dam, Reservoir And Tunnel Construction, Petar Milanovic Jan 2002

Subsidence Hazards As A Consequence Of Dam, Reservoir And Tunnel Construction, Petar Milanovic

International Journal of Speleology

Considering all man-made structures in karst areas, dams, reservoirs and tunnels are the most vulnerable in relation to induced subsidence and caverns. Reservoirs that are located entirely or partially on karstified rocks covered with unconsolidated sediments are especially subsidence-prone. As a consequence of induced subsidence a number of reservoirs in karst areas failed and were never fully filled. Such subsidence formation is very damaging because the development is unpredictable and practically instantaneous. Reservoirs in karst areas may fail to fill despite an extensive site investigation programs and sealing treatment. Every problem is unique and past experiences are never repeated. This …

Karst Subsidence In South-Central Apulia, Southern Italy, Marco Delle Rose, Mario Parise Jan 2002

Karst Subsidence In South-Central Apulia, Southern Italy, Marco Delle Rose, Mario Parise

International Journal of Speleology

Subsidence in the karst of Apulia (Southern Italy), one of the classical karst areas of Italy, is described in this paper. The carbonate rocks that make up the geological structure of the Apulia region are affected by subsidence, which is of different type and intensity depending upon geological, topographical, and hydrogeological conditions. In particular, we discriminate between inland subsidence and coastal subsidence. Inland subsidence is generally restricted to the presence of individual cavities, either empty or partly or totally filled with deposits produced by dissolution of soluble rocks underground. Locally, such subsidence can cause severe effects on anthropogenic structures above. …

Improving Farm Management Decisions By Analyzing Site-Specific Economic Data Developed From Yield Maps, Laura A. Powers Jan 2002

Improving Farm Management Decisions By Analyzing Site-Specific Economic Data Developed From Yield Maps, Laura A. Powers

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

This thesis examines the use of precision agriculture data, specifically yield maps, for makingsite-specific economic decisions for improved farm management. The adoption of precisionagriculture on farms has allowed producers to collect a greater quantity and more specificinformation about production than ever before. With such information, site-specific decisions canbe made. Incorporating economic data with yield map data, two primary decision examples aredeveloped: defining areas of production and nonproduction and managing temporal risk spatiallyacross a field. Included with the production/ nonproduction decision are the effects that landtenure arrangements and risk aversion levels have on the decision. The risk maps are developedusing break-even …

An Analysis Of Camera Calibration For Voxel Coloring Including The Effect Of Calibration On Voxelization Errors, Elwood Talmadge Jr. Waddell Jan 2002

An Analysis Of Camera Calibration For Voxel Coloring Including The Effect Of Calibration On Voxelization Errors, Elwood Talmadge Jr. Waddell

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

This thesis characterizes the problem of relative camera calibration in the context of three-dimensional volumetric reconstruction. The general effects of camera calibration errors on different parameters of the projection matrix are well understood. In addition, calibration error and Euclidean world errors for a single camera can be related via the inverse perspective projection. However, there has been little analysis of camera calibration for a large number of views and how those errors directly influence the accuracy of recovered three-dimensional models. A specific analysis of how camera calibration error is propagated to reconstruction errors using traditional voxel coloring algorithms is discussed. …

A "Good Angry Man": Harry Caudill, The Formative Years, 1922-1960, Tylina Jo Mullins Jan 2002

A "Good Angry Man": Harry Caudill, The Formative Years, 1922-1960, Tylina Jo Mullins

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

After the publication of Night Comes to the Cumberland: A Biography of a Depressed Area, Harry Caudill became a spokesperson for Appalachia. Throughout the 1960s, Caudill continued to challenge the corrupt political system of the Cumberland Valley. His indictment of the coal industry as a leading factor in the continual depression of the area led scholars and reformers to a better understanding of the interrelated dynamics affecting the region. Even though with the passage of time, scholars have rejected many of Caudills ideas concerning the mountain people, few doubt that he led the challenge against the political, economic, and social …

A Method For Identifying Gluon Jets With High Purity In 3-Jet Hadronic Z Decays, Ayda Beddall Jan 2002

A Method For Identifying Gluon Jets With High Purity In 3-Jet Hadronic Z Decays, Ayda Beddall

Turkish Journal of Physics

A method for identifying gluon jets with very high purity is presented and the performance evaluated. Quark and gluon jets from Monte Carlo simulated Hadronic Z decays are identified by energy ordered jets and applying heavy flavour tagging. It is shown that quark and gluon jets can be identified with a purity of about 98%.

Micro-Crystallographic, Optical And Transport Studies Of Cd_{0.7} Zn_{0.3} Se : Sb Thin Films, D. S. Sutrave, G. S. Shahane, V. B. Patil, L. P. Deshmukh, B. D. Sarwade

Turkish Journal of Physics

Cd_{1-x}Zn_{x}Se thin film structures doped with various concentrations of trivalent antimony were chemically deposited onto glass-substrates. These structures were then characterised through the XRD, SEM, optical and electrical characterization techniques. The X-ray diffractograms of both as-prepared and Sb-doped samples were obtained and analysed. The analysis revealed that the samples are microcrystalline over the whole range of the doping concentration (0 to 2 mol %). It is striking that the intensities of hexagonal and cubic reflections of CdSe went on increasing with doping concentration upto 0.1 mol % and decreased with further increase in Sb^{3+} content in the film whereas peak …
