Standing To Raise A Conflict Of Interest, Ivy Johnson Nov 2002

Standing To Raise A Conflict Of Interest, Ivy Johnson

Northern Illinois University Law Review

Lawyers often seek disqualification of the opposing counsel based upon their conflicts of interest as a strategic measure to delay litigation and increase costs for the other side. For many years, courts presumed that parties unaffected by the conflict of interest had standing because of the lawyer's professional obligations to report violations of ethics rules. Recently, the United States Supreme Court has cast doubt on the standing of such parties. This article first gives a brief introduction to conflict of interest rules and standing, followed by an in-depth analysis of the state of the law. Ms. Johnson concludes with an …

A History Of The Latter-Day Saints In The Columbia Basin Of Central Washington 1850-1972, Rick B. Jorgensen

Theses and Dissertations

The Columbia Basin of Central Washington has a relatively recent Latter-day Saint history among the regions of the western states. Most of the sparsely populated rural areas in the west that have large concentrations of Latter-day Saints were originally established as "Mormon" settlements. The basin referred to lies between the Snake and Columbia Rivers and now has thousands of Latter-day Saints who have chosen to inhabit the historically barren land and call it their home. A brief visit or casual observance of the area leads many to question what were the major factors and characteristics leading to the twentieth century …

Aisimam - An Artificial Immune System Based Intelligent Multiangent Model, Srividhya Sathyanath

Theses

The goal of this thesis is to develop a biological model for multiagent systems. This thesis explores artificial immune systems, a novel evolutionary paradigm based on the immunological principles. Artificial Immune systems (AIS) are found to be powerful to solve complex computational tasks. The main focus of the thesis is to develop a generic mathematical model that uses the principles of the human immune system in multiagent systems (MAS). The components and properties of the human immune system are studied. On understanding the concepts of A/5, a literature survey of multiagent systems is performed to understand and compare the multiagent …

The Law Of Last Resort, Barry E. Adler Nov 2002

The Law Of Last Resort, Barry E. Adler

Vanderbilt Law Review

A financially distressed individual or corporation employs the bankruptcy process only as a last resort. The study of bankruptcy law, however, need not, and should not, be an afterthought. The traditional bodies of law that compose private ordering are the laws of property, contract, and tort. Property law establishes private entitlements that can be specifically enforced against the world. Contract law permits individuals to exchange obligations and thus invest one another with entitlements. Tort law creates its own set of entitlements and imposes liability for unwanted interference with those or other entitlements. These bodies of law are often presented as …

Creating and maintaining up-to-date sharable Geographic Information SystemsTransportation (GIS-T) data is challenging. Many states are working on Transportation Framework efforts to build a complete, consistent, and current transportation data layer in conjunction with the NSDI and Geospatial One-Stop efforts. This paper summarizes an effort that systematically re-examined transportation data sharing issues as part of the development of a Transportation Framework for the State of Washington. Business needs were assessed in terms of spatial and temporal accuracy needs of stakeholders and users of a state-wide Transportation Framework. A conceptual model was developed for a Transportation Framework with emphasis on data flows …

Internalizing Outsider Trading, Ian Ayres, Stephen Choi Nov 2002

Internalizing Outsider Trading, Ian Ayres, Stephen Choi

Michigan Law Review

Investing in the United States has become a hobby for many. Individual ownership of equity, moreover, has increased over the past decade due in part to the introduction of internet-based trading. While providing the possibility for greater returns compared with bank savings accounts, among other investment alternatives, the public capital markets also pose greater risks for investors. Many individual investors lack both the resources and the incentive to analyze the value of any particular security in the market. Such investors thus trade at a systematic disadvantage relative to more informed parties. In response, regulators have asserted that certain informational disparities …

Copyright And Time: A Proposal, Joseph P. Liu Nov 2002

Copyright And Time: A Proposal, Joseph P. Liu

Michigan Law Review

This Article makes a very specific and concrete proposal: it argues that courts should adjust the scope of copyright protection to account for the passage of time by expressly considering time as a factor in fair use analysis. More specifically, this Article argues that the older a copyrighted work is, the greater the scope of fair use should be - that is, the greater the ability of others to re-use, critique, transform, and adapt the copyrighted work without permission of the copyright owner. Conversely, the newer the work, the narrower the scope of fair use. Or, even more concretely, this …

Hybrid Two-Dimensional Finite Element Model Of Tires, Yong Joe Kim, J Stuart Bolton Nov 2002

Hybrid Two-Dimensional Finite Element Model Of Tires, Yong Joe Kim, J Stuart Bolton

Publications of the Ray W. Herrick Laboratories

It has been shown that the vibrational response of a tire can be represented by a set of decaying waves, each associated with a particular cross-sectional mode shape in the region near the contact patch. Thus, it can be concluded that tires can be effectively modeled as lossy waveguides. It has also been shown that the sound radiation from tires is mainly from the region close to the contact patch. In consequence, it may be computationally efficient to analyze tire vibration and sound radiation in the region close to the contact patch by using a hybrid finite element model in …

Exploiting The Synergy Between Peer-To-Peer And Mobile Ad Hoc Networks, Y. Charlie Hu, Saumitra M. Das, Himabindu Pucha Nov 2002

Exploiting The Synergy Between Peer-To-Peer And Mobile Ad Hoc Networks, Y. Charlie Hu, Saumitra M. Das, Himabindu Pucha

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

We argue that there exists a synergy between peer-to-peer (p2p) overlay networks for the Internet and mobile ad hoc networks (MANET) connecting mobile nodes communicating with each other via multi-hop wireless links { both share the key characteristics of self- organization and decentralization, and both need to solve the same fundamental problem, that is, how to provide connectivity in a completely decentralized environment. We propose Dynamic P2P Source Routing (DPSR), a new routing protocol for MANETs that exploits the synergy between P2P and MANET for increased scalability. By integrating DSR and a topology-aware structured P2P overlay routing protocol, DPSR limits …

Knowledge Discovery From Texts: A Concept Frame Graph Approach, Kanagasabai Rajaraman, Ah-Hwee Tan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We address the text content mining problem through a concept based framework by constructing a conceptual knowledge base and discovering knowledge therefrom. Defining a novel representation called the Concept Frame Graph (CFG), we propose a learning algorithm for constructing a CFG knowledge base from text documents. An interactive concept map visualization technique is presented for user-guided knowledge discovery from the knowledge base. Through experimental studies on real life documents, we observe that the proposed approach is promising for mining deeper knowledge.
