Exploratory Research In Public Social Service Agencies: As Assessment Of Dissemination And Utilization, Teresa Dal Santo, Sheryl Goldberg, Pamela Choice, Michael J. Austin
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
The purpose of this study was to investigate how nine exploratory research studies were disseminated and utilized by social services agencies in four California counties. It is based on in-depth interviews with sixteen key social service agency staff members in four counties who were involved in the planning and implementation of the research projects. While reports were disseminated internally to agency management staff, the results revealed that fewer were shared with supervisory and line staff. All of the studies influenced agency thinking and, in some cases, specific agency decisionmaking processes. The key factors influencing the utilization of research included: (a) …

Not In My Social World: A Cultural Analysis Of Media Representations, Contested Spaces, And Sympathy For The Homeless, James A. Forte
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
The social constructionist approach offers conceptual tools that may augment social workers' persuasive powers and problem solving capacities. In this case study, I examine a newspaper campaign to cast the homeless in negative terms and justify the closing of a shelter. Findings are presented as seven themes used by competing claims-makers. Each constructs a different depiction of the homeless, of homelessness, and of preferred solutions. Linkages between community memberships and favored problem definitions are identified. I conclude with suggestions for how "intelligent social reconstruction" might help social workers function as sympathy brokers for the vulnerable. (Key words: homelessness, NIMBY, mass …

The political question doctrine is one of the controversial issues in Korea and U.S. The most important point is, however, that the current trend on political questions in Korea is in line with that of American judicial activism. In other words, both countries are trying to narrow the range of the doctrine. Nonetheless, the two are proceeding in sharply opposite directions. Fully matured, even excessively extended American judicial activism should return to the classical separation of powers doctrine. Public policy is one of the defenses that a court or a party may invoke in order to resist enforcement of an unjust foreign award or judgment. The purpose of this study is to analyze the status of the public policy as a defense to enforcement in the U.S and to examine its success rate. The thesis will contain suggestions to make public policy a more meaningful defense with respect to the enforcement of foreign judgments and its role in bringing about uniformity in the field of foreign judgments will be analyzed.

Arkansas Agricultural Experiment Station Research Series
Soybean cultivar performance tests are conducted each year in Arkansas by the University of Arkansas Division of Agriculture. The tests provide information to companies developing cultivars and/or marketing seed within the State, and aid the Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service in formulating cultivar recommendations for soybean producers. Corn and grain sorghum performance tests are conducted each year in Arkansas by the University of Arkansas Division of Agriculture. In Egypt, refugee status determination (RSD) by the United Nations refugee agency is frequently the single most important decision anyone will make affecting the life of an asylum-seeker. In 2001, the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) office in Cairo received the most individual RSD applications of all of the agency's offices worldwide. The Cairo office has taken some significant steps to improve the RSD process. At the same time, some important international standards of fair and effective RSD procedures have not been implemented. Simulation of waterflood performance is used to verify the characterization of flow-units in a heterogeneous reservoir. BOAST98 software was used for simulation of waterflood performance. Two adjacent five spot patterns in the Stringtown field in West Virginia were selected to be evaluated in this study.;The predicted permeability along with the porosity from Artificial Neural Network (A.N.N) was used for primary characterization purpose and identification of flow-units in the two five spots patterns.;Two alternate simulation models were developed. The use of system data to make predictions about the future system state commonly known as prognostics is a rapidly developing field. Prognostics seeks to build on current diagnostic equipment capabilities for its predictive capability. Many military systems including the Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) are planning to include on-board prognostics systems to enhance system supportability and affordability. Current research efforts supporting these developments tend to focus on developing a prognostic tool for one specific system component.
