There does not seem to be a widely held view among WTO members of the proper role and scope of TRIPS. One of the main reasons why TRIPS is controversial is because it allocates rights in innovation, some would say beyond the bounds of what a trade agreement should seek to do. The lines of the debate are often conceptualized in terms of 'developing' versus 'developed' country differences. Increasing evidence suggests that the biotechnology industry's interest in generating revenue and the public's desire to obtain the best healthcare may be at odds. The patenting of genetic information is at the core of this debate. Most, if not all, of the products of the biotech industry's research are patentable. Historically, patents have been justified on the grounds that they are needed to create an incentive for researchers and companies to invest time and money in projects that have uncertain outcomes. In light of the devastation and destruction caused by the September 11th attacks and the remaining imminent threat of more attacks in this country, this Note proposes legislation that would provide for removal of aliens who are merely associated with a known terrorist organization that has committed acts of terrorism in the United States. Part II outlines the Immigration and Naturalization Services (INS) legislation in effect at the time of the attacks and the rationale behind prohibiting deportation for mere association with a known terrorist organization. A Field Study Of The Northern Leopard Frog (Rana Pipiens) In The Potholes Reservoir Area, Washington, Heather Maranda Simmons

Northern Leopard Frogs (Rana pipiens) were studied in the Potholes Reservoir area in eastern Washington, which is a unique and dynamic system of ponds. The filling and drying cycles of the reservoir cause seasonal fluctuation on pond depth. My goal was to find frogs and document their use of these ponds. I conducted surveys of R. pipiens from April - September 2002.

I caught 178 R. pipiens adults and subadults throughout my field season, gathering weight and length data. I found two groups of egg masses in April, and noted their size, location and point of attachment. Findings were similar …

Synthesis And Electronic Structure Of New Aryl- And Alkyl-Substituted 1,3,4-Oxadiazole-2-Thione Derivatives, Feray Aydoğan, Zuhal Turgut, Nüket Öcal, Safi̇ye Sağ Erdem

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

New 5-alkyl and 3-(2,4-dimethylphenyl) substituted 1,3,4-oxadiazole-2-thione derivatives were synthesized by the ring closure reactions of various acylhydrazides with carbon disulphide. Mannich bases for some of these compounds were also synthesized by condensation with benzaldehyde and primary amines. All new compounds were characterized by spectral data. Most of them were tested for their antibacterial and antituberculostatic activity. Molecular orbital calculations at the HF/6-31G** level were also performed to determine the optimized geometrical structures. Results indicated electron delocalization over several atoms of the ring. An additional study on the tautomeric equilibrium between 1,3,4-oxadiazole-2-thione and its thiol form showed that the thione tautomer …

The Use Of Chloranilic Acid For The Spectrophotometric Determination Of Three Antihistamines, Kanakapura Basavaiah, V. S. Charan

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

Cyproheptadine hydrochloride (CPH), methdilazine hydrochloride (MDH) and promethazine theoclate (PMT) were determined in their pure state and in pharmaceutical formulations by a simple spectrophotometric method. The determination was based on the formation of a charge-transfer complex between chloranilic acid as a \pi-acceptor and the studied drugs as n-donors in an acetonitrile-chloroform mixture. The spectra, various experimental parameters, the stoichiometry and the stability of the complexes formed were investigated. The complexes formed were found to absorb at 520 nm. Beer's law is obeyed in the concentration ranges 25-125, 20-100 and 25-150 \mu g ml^{-1}, for CPH, MDH and PMT respectively. The …

Molecular Investigation Of Genetic Variability Among Borrelia Infecting Ticks In Florida Using Base Exision Sequence Scanning, Larry W. Martin

Lyme disease (LD), the most commonly reported arthropod-associated illness in the U.S., is a multi-system tick-borne illness caused by the spirochete Borrelia burgdorferi. In the eastern U.S. the agent is transmitted by the blacklegged tick, Ixodes scapuiaris, and primarily maintained in nature by rodent reservoirs. Although the majority of human cases has been concentrated in the northeastern U.S., hundreds have also been reported in southern states. Some of these cases represent exposures that occurred elsewhere in the country. However, many were from endemic exposures, from which numerous indigenous cases have been confirmed in the Southeast.
