A Design For A Chapel For Subiaco Abbey, Josh Siebert Jan 2002

A Design For A Chapel For Subiaco Abbey, Josh Siebert

Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal

The Benedictine Abbey is a product of medieval thought and society; for centuries its architecture signified the cosmology and spirituality not only of the order but also of a widely accepted Christian worldview. Through the design of a Meditation Chapel for the Benedictine Abbey of Subiaco at Paris, Arkansas, this project explored the cultural meaning and technical execution of contemporary sacred architecture. Nearly a millennium ago, the skin and bones of Gothic structure and stained glass represented a sacred ideal. In the contemporary context, however, this research probed the possibilities of using systems (interior and exterior), particularly the design of …

A Vision For Administering Schools : A Reflective Essay, Kevin Litterer Jan 2002

A Vision For Administering Schools : A Reflective Essay, Kevin Litterer

Graduate Research Papers

I have experienced many things in two years as a high school principal. I have been yelled at by parents and praised by others. I have mourned the death of a board president, a teacher, and a little girl in the seventh grade. I have hired teachers who are making a difference in the lives of children every time they walk into the classroom, and I have dealt with the stress that comes with terminating a teacher. I have had the opportunity to address the community in an effort to persuade them to vote "yes" on a bond issue and …

Actiononaias Ligamentina As A Biomonitor In The Green River: An Unique Approach For Analysis Of Environmental Impacts, Robert Kirkland

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Biomonitoring has become an important component in bioassessment programs. It is used to maintain high water quality standards, and determine contaminant levels and biological affects in areas that have been heavily disturbed. The objectives of this research were 1) to improve and apply certain modern biomonitoring techniques and 2) to locate possible contaminant sources affecting the flora and fauna of the Green River and of Mammoth Cave. Actinonaias ligamentina (Lamarck, 1819), a freshwater mussel, was used for interpretation of these impacts as well as refinement of biomonitoring techniques. The mussels were collected in the Lawler Bend region of the Green …

Acculturation Experience Of Africa Immigrants In The United States Of American, Judi Minage Ukiru

Theses Digitization Project

The conclusions extracted from this research project show that little research has been done on social issues presented by the African immigrant to America. Those charged with public welfare research and intervention must develop tools and strategies necessary to assess the needs of African immigrants, to facilitate their improved adjustment to their environment. African immigrants in the United States can benefit from similar research designs and resources accorded to the Latino and Asian populations.

This thesis will also seek to answer the question of extent to which Americans have become tolerant of other people's culture and what influence, if any, have transmitted from the Afro-Caribbean people to other North American societies. The religion and rituals of four Afro-Caribbean groups will be discussed in this study.

A Satisfaction Survey Of Relative Caretakers, Teri Lynn Elliott, Sandra. Medina Jan 2002

A Satisfaction Survey Of Relative Caretakers, Teri Lynn Elliott, Sandra. Medina

Theses Digitization Project

It is assumed that a parenting role by a grandparent or grandparents has been tied to life events, Such as divorce or the death of their own children. The parent was no longer in the picture and the grandparent stepped in to care for the children. Although this pattern has by no means disappeared, society is now seeing more and more cases of dysfunctional parents who are unable or unwilling to raise their own children who are therefore being raised by the grandparent. relative caregivers such as grandparents.

An Investigation Of Sex Roles And Locus Of Control That Influence Female Leadership Career Intentions, Kendall Teague Kerekes

Theses Digitization Project

This thesis attempted to uncover whether leadership career intentions and masculine sex-role orientation were mediated by internal locus of control. The intangible "glass ceiling" has continued to be a barrier for women in business. Research has repeatedly attempted to uncover the justification for sexual discrimination in the workforce, striving to find where the "weaknesses" of women in management ranks resided.

Mimosa 2002, Jacksonville State University Jan 2002

Mimosa 2002, Jacksonville State University

JSU Yearbooks

The JSU Yearbook Collection spans the years from 1926 to the present. The publication began in 1926 as the Teacola (some volumes spelled "Teacoala") and continued under this title through 1933. The yearbook appears to have ceased printing after that year; the student newspaper took the name Teacola (later changed to the Collegian and finally the Chanticleer) and began publication in 1934. The yearbook started up again in 1947 under the name Mimosa. The Library holds all volume years that were printed: 1926-1933, 1947-1950, 1952-present.

Impact Of Flower Harvesting On The Salt Marsh Plant Limonium Carolinianum, Jennifer L. Baltzer, Edward G. Reekie, Heather L. Hewlin, Philip D. Taylor, J. Sherman Boates Jan 2002

Impact Of Flower Harvesting On The Salt Marsh Plant Limonium Carolinianum, Jennifer L. Baltzer, Edward G. Reekie, Heather L. Hewlin, Philip D. Taylor, J. Sherman Boates

Biology Faculty Publications

Because of the potentially detrimental effects of seed production on adult survivorship and growth, moderate flower harvesting may have little negative impact on population growth of long-lived perennial plants such as Limonium carolinianum (Walter) Britton. We examined this by collecting data on survivorship, growth, and fecundity of an unharvested population over a period of 5 years and conducted a controlled experiment to examine the effect of harvesting on adult survivorship and growth over a 3-year period. Data were summarized in the form of a stage structured matrix population model with a stochastic element that incorporated year-to-year variation in transition probabilities. …

A Model For The Development Of The Rhizobial And Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Symbioses In Legumes And Its Use To Understand The Roles Of Ethylene In The Establishment Of These Two Symbioses, Frédérique C. Guinel, R.D. Geil Jan 2002

A Model For The Development Of The Rhizobial And Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Symbioses In Legumes And Its Use To Understand The Roles Of Ethylene In The Establishment Of These Two Symbioses, Frédérique C. Guinel, R.D. Geil

Biology Faculty Publications

We propose a model depicting the development of nodulation and arbuscular mycorrhizae. Both processes are dissected into many steps, using Pisum sativum L. nodulation mutants as a guideline. For nodulation, we distinguish two main developmental programs, one epidermal and one cortical. Whereas Nod factors alone affect the cortical program, bacteria are required to trigger the epidermal events. We propose that the two programs of the rhizobial symbiosis evolved separately and that, over time, they came to function together. The distinction between these two programs does not exist for arbuscular mycorrhizae development despite events occurring in both root tissues. Mutations that …

Physiological Responses To Acute Silver Exposure In The Freshwater Crayfish (Cambarus Diogenes Diogenes)—A Model Invertebrate?, Martin Grosell, Colin J. Brauner, Scott P. Kelly, James C. Mcgeer, Adalto Bianchini, Chris M. Wood Jan 2002

Physiological Responses To Acute Silver Exposure In The Freshwater Crayfish (Cambarus Diogenes Diogenes)—A Model Invertebrate?, Martin Grosell, Colin J. Brauner, Scott P. Kelly, James C. Mcgeer, Adalto Bianchini, Chris M. Wood

Biology Faculty Publications

Adult crayfish (Cambarus diogenes diogenes) exposed to 8.41 ± 0.17 μg silver/L (19.4% as Ag+) in moderately hard freshwater under flow-through conditions for 96 h exhibited ionoregulatory disturbance, elevated metabolic ammonia (Tamm) production and substantial silver accumulation in the gills, hemolymph, and hepatopancreas. The ionoregulatory disturbance included both a generally reduced unidirectional Na1 influx and an increased unidirectional Na+ efflux, leading to a substantial net loss of Na+ from the silver-exposed crayfish. The Na+ uptake in silver-exposed crayfish differed overall from controls, while the increased Na+ efflux recovered to control values 48 …

Essential Role Of The G-Domain In Targeting Of The Protein Import Receptor Attoc159 To The Chloroplast Outer Membrane, Jörg Bauer, Andreas Hiltbrunner, Petra Weibel, Pierre-Alexandre Vidi, Mayte Alvarez-Huerta, Matthew D. Smith, Danny J. Schnell, Felix Kessler Jan 2002

Essential Role Of The G-Domain In Targeting Of The Protein Import Receptor Attoc159 To The Chloroplast Outer Membrane, Jörg Bauer, Andreas Hiltbrunner, Petra Weibel, Pierre-Alexandre Vidi, Mayte Alvarez-Huerta, Matthew D. Smith, Danny J. Schnell, Felix Kessler

Biology Faculty Publications

Two homologous GTP-bindin proteins, atToc33 and atToc159, control access of cytosolic precursor proteins to the chloroplast, at Toc33 is a constitutive outer chloroplast membrane protein, whereas the precusor receptor atToc159 may be able to switch between a soluble and an integral membrane form. By transient expression of GFP fusion proteins, mutant analysis, and biochemical experimentation, we demonstrate that the GTP-binding domain regulates the targeting of cytosolic atToc159 to the chloroplast and mediates the switch between cytosolic and integral membrane forms. Mutant atToc159, unable to bind GTP, does not reinstate a green phenotype in an albino mutant (ppi2) lacking …

Anna Marie Smith On Welfare Reform And Sexual Regulation, Richard Blum Jan 2002

Anna Marie Smith On Welfare Reform And Sexual Regulation, Richard Blum

Center for LGBTQ Studies (CLAGS)

"Why is 'welfare reform' a queer issue?" That question was posed to a gathering of New York-based social services and LGBTQ advocates a couple of years ago at a meeting that launched the Queer Economic Justice Network (QEJN). Since then, QEJN has reached out to mainstream LGBTQ organizations to help them recognize the myriad ways that "welfare reform" has harmed poor queers.
