A Four-Year Eddy-Permitting Assimilation Of Sea-Surface Temperature And Altimetric Data In The South Atlantic Ocean, Thierry Penduff, Pierre Brasseur, Charles-Emmanuel Testut, Bernard Barnier, Jacques Verron Jan 2002

A Four-Year Eddy-Permitting Assimilation Of Sea-Surface Temperature And Altimetric Data In The South Atlantic Ocean, Thierry Penduff, Pierre Brasseur, Charles-Emmanuel Testut, Bernard Barnier, Jacques Verron

Journal of Marine Research

Sea-surface temperature (SST) and sea-surface height (SSH) data are assimilated with a reduced-order sequential filter every 10 days over four years (1993-1996) in a 1/3-degree resolution South Atlantic primitive equation model. At every assimilation step, the misfit between observations and their model counterparts is evaluated and projected onto the dominant 10 multivariate, full-depth local modes of variability diagnosed from a free model run (without assimilation). Satellite observations are used to perform a sequential update of all model variables according to their "natural" correlations with the surface variables. In this paper, we perform a validation of both the mean state and …

South Dakota Stocker Cattle Prices, Matthew Diersen Jan 2002

South Dakota Stocker Cattle Prices, Matthew Diersen

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

Producers are concerned about the general price level of stocker cattle, weaned calves weighing about 550 pounds. Producers observe a wide range of reported prices for any given sale. Aggregating prices usually just compounds the problem as an even wider range may be observed across sales. For example, for the week ending November 1, 2001, the price range for 550-599 pound Medium and Large Frame #1 steers across various South Dakota sales was $87-100 per cwt. While knowledge of the price level is necessary for making marketing decisions, producers also desire relative prices to sort out sale-day and quality effects.

Performance Limits Of Labriform Propulsion And Correlates With Fin Shape And Motion, Jeffrey A. Walker, Mark W. Westneat Jan 2002

Performance Limits Of Labriform Propulsion And Correlates With Fin Shape And Motion, Jeffrey A. Walker, Mark W. Westneat

Biology

Labriform locomotion, which is powered by oscillating the paired pectoral fins, varies along a continuum from rowing the fins back and forth to flapping the fins up and down. It has generally been assumed (i) that flapping is more mechanically efficient than rowing, a hypothesis confirmed by a recent simulation experiment, and (ii) that flapping should be associated with wing-shaped fins while rowing should be associated with paddle-shaped fins, To determine whether these hypotheses and the results of the simulation experiment are consistent with natural variation, we compared the steady swimming performance (critical swimming speed) of four species of labrid …

Estimating Causal Parameters In Marginal Structural Models With Unmeasured Confounders Using Instrumental Variables, Tanya A. Henneman, Mark Johannes Van Der Laan, Alan E. Hubbard Jan 2002

Estimating Causal Parameters In Marginal Structural Models With Unmeasured Confounders Using Instrumental Variables, Tanya A. Henneman, Mark Johannes Van Der Laan, Alan E. Hubbard

U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series

For statisticians analyzing medical data, a significant problem in determining the causal effect of a treatment on a particular outcome of interest, is how to control for unmeasured confounders. Techniques using instrumental variables (IV) have been developed to estimate causal parameters in the presence of unmeasured confounders. In this paper we apply IV methods to both linear and non-linear marginal structural models. We study a specific class of generalized estimating equations that is appropriate to these data, and compare the performance of the resulting estimator to the standard IV method, a two-stage least squares procedure. Our results are applied to …

The Shape Of The Trade-Off Function Between Reproduction And Future Performance In Plantago Major And Plantago Rugelii, Edward G. Reekie, Sonya Budge, Jennifer L. Baltzer Jan 2002

The Shape Of The Trade-Off Function Between Reproduction And Future Performance In Plantago Major And Plantago Rugelii, Edward G. Reekie, Sonya Budge, Jennifer L. Baltzer

Biology Faculty Publications

There is a paucity of data describing the nature of the trade-off function between reproduction and future performance. Most studies implicitly assume it is a linear function such that allocation of resources to reproduction results in a proportional decline in future survival and reproduction. We reanalyse data from a field experiment with halfsib families of Plantago major L. that suggests this relationship is in fact curvilinear. Low levels of reproductive investment had relatively little impact on future performance and higher levels of investment had a larger impact. To explain this curvilinear pattern, we conducted an experiment to examine the effect …

Two Concepts Of Immortality: Reframing Public Debate On Stem-Cell Research, Frank Pasquale Jan 2002

Two Concepts Of Immortality: Reframing Public Debate On Stem-Cell Research, Frank Pasquale

Faculty Scholarship

Regenerative medicine seeks not only to cure disease, but also to arrest the aging process itself. So far, public attention to the new health care has focused on two of its methods: embryonic stem-cell research and therapeutic cloning. Since both processes manipulate embryos, they alarm those who believe life begins at conception. Such religious objections have dominated headlines on the topic, and were central to President George W. Bush's decision to restrict stem-cell research.

Although they are now politically potent, the present religious objections to regenerative medicine will soon become irrelevant. Scientists are fast developing new ways of culturing the …

Brain-Based Learning: Implications For The Elementary Classroom, Brenda Van Roekel Jan 2002

Brain-Based Learning: Implications For The Elementary Classroom, Brenda Van Roekel

Master of Education Program Theses

Recent developments in neuroscience have enabled scientists to understand and image brain activity. Brain researchers are now more able than ever before to understand how the brain works, what affects the brain, and what implications these discoveries have for education. Based upon these discoveries new methods of teaching have been devised using the term, brain-based strategies or brain-based learning. This thesis examines some of the brain-based strategies embraced by leaders in this field. It will pay particular attention to the enriched environment, the effect of emotion on learning, and the concept of sensitive or critical periods. It will examine research …

Electrophoretic Aspects Of Blood Serum Proteins Of The Genus Apodemus In The Black Sea Region, Reyhan Çolak Jan 2002

Electrophoretic Aspects Of Blood Serum Proteins Of The Genus Apodemus In The Black Sea Region, Reyhan Çolak

Turkish Journal of Biology

Globulin and albumin proteins of Apodemus populations in the Black Sea region were examined using SDS-PAGE (sodium dodecyl sulphate - polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis). There were 7-11 bands in the globulin region and 1-3 bands in the prealbumin zone. It was determined that there were variations in both the globulin region and the prealbumin zone in populations of this genus. A band was observed in the postalbumin zone with different electrophoretic mobilities including slow and fast. This different mobility in the postalbumin zone separated Apodemus specimens into two different populations in sympatry. These findings showed that at least two populations of …

Partial Purification Of Intestinal Triglyceride Lipase From Cyprinion Macrostomus Heckel, 1843 And Effect Of Ph On Enzyme Activity, Naci̇ Değerli̇, M. Ali̇ Akpinar Jan 2002

Partial Purification Of Intestinal Triglyceride Lipase From Cyprinion Macrostomus Heckel, 1843 And Effect Of Ph On Enzyme Activity, Naci̇ Değerli̇, M. Ali̇ Akpinar

Turkish Journal of Biology

Intestinal triglyceride lipase (TG) of Cyprinion macrostomus after precipitation with 30% polyethylene glycol (PEG), was partially purified by hydrophobic interaction chromatography on phenyl sepharose CL-4B, and the effect of pH on this enzyme activity was determined titrimetrically. Intestinal tissue homogenates were precipitated using 30% PEG-8000, and then applied onto a phenyl sepharose CL-4B column for hy-drophobic interaction chromatography. The lipase that bound to this hydrophobic resin and was partially purified by this single step application was then eluted from this resin with taurocholic acid and Triton X-100 elution. This purified enzyme effectively hydrolysed natural olive oil substrate under the experimental …

Hydroxyurea Induces P53 Accumulation And Apoptosis In Human Cervical Carcinoma Cells, Hakan Akça, Osman Ni̇dai̇ Özeş Jan 2002

Hydroxyurea Induces P53 Accumulation And Apoptosis In Human Cervical Carcinoma Cells, Hakan Akça, Osman Ni̇dai̇ Özeş

Turkish Journal of Biology

Cervical carcinoma is one type of cancer with a high mortality rate in women. In this research, we investigated the cytotoxic, antiproliferative and apoptosis-inducing effects of hydroxyurea on a human cervical carcinoma cell line, HeLa. We found that hydroxyurea has cytotoxic and antiproliferative effects on HeLa cells in a dose-dependent manner. We also found that hydroxyurea can increase cellular levels of p53 and p21, and induce DNA fragmentation in a dose-dependent manner. We concluded that the observed antiproliferative, cytotoxic and apoptosis inducing activities of hydroxyurea might be mediated by the induction of p53 and its transcriptional target, p21.

Analysis Of The Effects Of Hyperosmotic Stress On The Derepression Of Invertase Activities And The Growth Of Different Baker's Yeast Strains, Sezai̇ Türkel, Tülay Turgut Jan 2002

Analysis Of The Effects Of Hyperosmotic Stress On The Derepression Of Invertase Activities And The Growth Of Different Baker's Yeast Strains, Sezai̇ Türkel, Tülay Turgut

Turkish Journal of Biology

The growth of baker's yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae in medium containing sucrose requires a high level of extracellular invertase enzyme activity. However, the expression of invertase is under the strict control of glucose repression in S. cerevisiae. In addition, invertase enzyme activity is also affected by physiological stress conditions that baker's yeast is exposed to during the various stages of industrial level production and downstream processing. We analyzed the effect of hyperosmotic stress on the derepression of invertase activities of a haploid laboratory yeast strain and three different industrial baker's yeast strains. Our results indicated that hyperosmotic stress interferes with the …

Effect Of Experimental Diabetes Mellitus On Plasma Lactate Dehydrogenase And Glutamic Oxaloacetic Transaminase Levels In Rabbits, İsmai̇l Çeli̇k, Eşref Yeği̇n, Fehmi̇ Odabaşoğlu

Turkish Journal of Biology

Hyperglycemia was induced in 20 male, white, New Zealand rabbits (2-3 kg) (Oryctolagus cuniculus huxley) by alloxan (100 mg/kg body weight, I.V.) and maintained for 16 weeks without insulin treatment. Blood samples were taken from both diabetic and non-diabetic rabbits at the same time for measurement of plasma enzymes. Levels of glutamic oxalacetic transaminase (GOT) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) were determined after treatment. The levels of LDH and GOT were 155.6 ± 41.9 U/L and 47.0 ± 20.4 U/L in the control group respectively. These parameters were 286.9 ± 142.9 U/L and 93.9 ± 62.5 U/L in the diabetic group …

Protoplast Fusion In Sugar Beet (Beta Vulgaris L.), Songül Gürel, Ekrem Gürel, Zeki̇ Kaya Jan 2002

Protoplast Fusion In Sugar Beet (Beta Vulgaris L.), Songül Gürel, Ekrem Gürel, Zeki̇ Kaya

Turkish Journal of Biology

In this study, attempts were made to fuse the suspension-derived protoplasts of a sugar beet breeding line (ÇBM315) with the mesophyll-derived protoplasts of three breeding lines (M114, ELK345 and M1017), which were obtained from our previous experiments. Combinations of three different PEG concentrations (20%, 25% or 30%) and three different treatment durations (15, 20 or 25 min) were tested. The fusion efficiency was determined by measuring the viability, heterokaryon frequency and plating efficiency (PE) of the fused protoplasts after four weeks of culture. In general, 25% PEG combined with 20 min treatment duration produced the highest fusion frequency, but the …

Accumulation Of Poly-\Beta-Hydroxybutyrate In Streptomyces Species During Growth With Different Nitrogen Sources, Aysel Uğur, Nuretti̇n Şahi̇n, Yavuz Beyatli

Turkish Journal of Biology

The accumulation of poly-\beta-hydroxybutyric acid (PHB) in 27 Streptomyces isolates with different taxonomical properties was investigated. The amount of synthesized PHB was determined as crotonic acid by spectrophotometry. Eighty percent of the tested isolates accumulated PHB between 0.3 and 7.6% of dry mycelial weight. PHB was produced by a selectant of Streptomyces isolates in media containing different nitrogen sources (KNO_3, glycine, peptone, proteose peptone, L-asparagine, tryptone and malt extract), each combined with 2 g/l glucose as the carbon source. The most effective PHB production was observed on glycine/glucose medium with a 7.6% dry mycelial weight. Nitrogen limiting conditions were inhibitory …

Embryo Culture In Barley (Hordeum Vulgare L.), Betül Bürün, Esi̇n Çoban Poyrazoğlu

Turkish Journal of Biology

The effects of medium and sterilization on the mature embryo culture of barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) were studied. Among the different media used, the highest plantlet development from embryos was obtained in Randolph and Cox medium (92.1%), followed by Murashige and Skoog (MS) (91.3%), half-strength MS (1/2 MS) (87.7%) and B5 (85.7%). Among the sterilization methods studied, sodium hypochlorite sterilization followed by treatment of antibiotic solution and sterilization HgCl_2 application was found to be more effective than the other methods. However, no statistically significant negative effect of HgCl_2 on the plantlet development from embryos was observed.

Purification And Determination Of The Molecular Structure Of Hemolymph Lectin Of Agrotis Segetum (Denis And Schiff.), Nursel Gül, Cevat Ayvali

Turkish Journal of Biology

A soluble lectin was purified from the hemolymph of Agrotis segetum by two methods, via affinity chromatography on a Sepharose-4B column and gel filtration on a Superdex-200 column. Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate-Polyacrylamide Gel Electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) showed a single protein band with a molecular weight of 69,000 in both the presence and absence of 2-Mercaptoethanol. Alternatively, the molecular weight of this lectin was estimated to be 69,000 by gel filtration on Superdex-200. Electron microscopic observation of the purified lectin was reticular in structure and consisted of tandem aligned spherical basic units.
