Two Splice Variants Of Nopp140 In Drosophila Melanogaster, John M. Waggener, Patrick J. Dimario Feb 2002

Two Splice Variants Of Nopp140 In Drosophila Melanogaster, John M. Waggener, Patrick J. Dimario

Faculty Publications

The Nopp140 gene of Drosophila maps within 79A5 of chromosome 3. Alternative splicing yields two variants. DmNopp140 (654 residues) is the sequence homolog of vertebrate Nopp140. Its carboxy terminus is 64% identical to that of the prototypical rat Noppl40. DmNopp140-RGG (688 residues) is identical to DmNopp140 throughout its first 551 residues, but its carboxy terminus contains a glycine/arginine-rich domain that is often found in RNA-binding proteins such as vertebrate nucleolin. Both Drosophila variants localize to nucleoli in Drosophila Schneider II cells and Xenopus oocytes, specifically within the dense fibrillar components. In HeLa cells, DmNopp140-RGG localizes to intact nucleoli, whereas DmNopp140 …

Comparison Of Models For Estimation Of Genetic Parameters For Mature Weight Of Hereford Cattle, J. M. Rumph, R. M. Koch, K. E. Gregory, L. V. Cundiff, L. Dale Van Vleck Feb 2002

Comparison Of Models For Estimation Of Genetic Parameters For Mature Weight Of Hereford Cattle, J. M. Rumph, R. M. Koch, K. E. Gregory, L. V. Cundiff, L. Dale Van Vleck

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Genetic parameters of mature weight are needed for effective selection and genetic evaluation. Data for estimating these parameters were collected from 1963 to 1985 and consisted of 32,018 mature weight records of 4,175 Hereford cows that were in one control and three selection lines that had been selected for weaning weight, for yearling weight, or for an index combining yearling weight and muscle score for 22 yr. Several models and subsets of the data were considered. The mature weight records consisted of a maximum of three seasonal weights taken each year, at brand clipping (February and March), before breeding (May …

Interferon-Γ-Mediated Activation And Ubiquitin-Proteasome-Dependent Degradation Of Pparγ In Adipocytes, Z. Elizabeth Floyd, Jacqueline M. Stephens Feb 2002

Interferon-Γ-Mediated Activation And Ubiquitin-Proteasome-Dependent Degradation Of Pparγ In Adipocytes, Z. Elizabeth Floyd, Jacqueline M. Stephens

Faculty Publications

Interferon-γ (IFNγ) treatment of adipocytes results in a down-regulation of the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ (PPARγ). The decrease in PPARγ expression is mediated by inhibition of PPARγ synthesis and increased degradation of PPARγ. In this study, we demonstrate that both PPARγ1 and PPARγ2 are targeted to the proteasome under basal conditions and that PPARγ1 is more labile than PPARγ2. The IFNγ-induced increase in PPARγ turnover is blocked by proteasome inhibition and is accompanied by an increase in PPARγ-polyubiquitin conjugates. In addition, IFNγ treatment results in the transcriptional activation of PPARγ. Similar to ligand-dependent activation of PPARγ, IFNγ-induced activation was greater …

The Influence Of Gold Substrate Topography On The Voltammetry Of Cytochrome C Adsorbed On Carboxylic Acid Terminated Self-Assembled Monolayers, Michael C. Leopold, Edmond F. Bowden Feb 2002

The Influence Of Gold Substrate Topography On The Voltammetry Of Cytochrome C Adsorbed On Carboxylic Acid Terminated Self-Assembled Monolayers, Michael C. Leopold, Edmond F. Bowden

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Interfacial investigations of a protein monolayer electrochemical system, equine cytochrome c (cyt c) adsorbed to carboxylic acid terminated self-assembled monolayer (COOH SAM) modified gold electrodes, were performed. Electrochemical, spectroscopic, and scanning probe microscopy techniques were utilized to explore the influence of gold topography in the cyt c/COOH SAM/gold system. COOH SAMs were prepared from 14-mercaptotetradecanoic acid and 11-mercaptoundecanoic acid on a variety of substrates including evaporated, bulk, single crystal, and epitaxially grown gold on mica. These substrates encompassed a wide range of surface roughness. As the topography of the gold became smoother, SAMs exhibited an increased ability to …
