Analytical Derivation Of A Coupled-Circuit Model Of A Claw-Pole Alternator With Concentrated Stator Windings, Hua Bai, Steven Pekarek, Jerry L. Tichenor, Walter Eversman, Duane J. Buening, Gregory R. Holbrook, Michael L. Hull, Ronald J. Krefta, Steven J. Shields

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A lumped-parameter coupled-circuit model of a claw-pole alternator is derived. To derive the model, analytical techniques are used to define a three-dimensional (3-D) Fourier-series representation of the airgap flux density. Included in the series expansion are the harmonics introduced by rotor saliency, concentrated stator windings, and stator slots. From the airgap flux density waveform, relatively simple closed-form expressions for the stator and rotor self- and mutual-inductances are obtained. The coupled-circuit model is implemented in the simulation of an alternator/rectifier system using a commercial state-model-based circuit analysis program. Comparisons with experimental results demonstrate the accuracy of the model in predicting both …

Cowpeas - A New Forage Crop For South Dakota, Edward K. Twidwell, Arvid Boe, Kevin D. Kephart, David P. Casper

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

In the northern Great Plains, cool-season pastures decline in productivity during summer. This reduces available forage supplies. Solutions to forage shortages during the summer traditionally have included the use of perennial and annual warm-season species for pastures, hay, or silage. Cowpeas, a non-traditional crop suitable for summer forage, have been investigated recently at SDSU. Cowpeas (Vigna unguiculata [L.] Walp.) are an important legume in the southeastern United States, but since 1940 they have been replaced gradually by soybeans, clovers, and other legumes. Referred to as “black-eyed peas,” cowpeas are grown primarily for human consumption but also are suitable for hay, …

Take An Accurate Forage Sample, Myers Owens, Nancy Thiex Mar 2002

Take An Accurate Forage Sample, Myers Owens, Nancy Thiex

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

Successful livestock production depends largely on the feeding program; and what you should feed depends on an accurate analysis of the forage portion of your ration. The accuracy of forage analysis depends on the sample that you send to the lab. Samples must be representative of the feeds being fed. Poor sampling will result in misleading values, higher feed costs, and reduced performance. In many feeding programs, the sample is the weak link. The results of the lab tests will be useful only if the sample accurately represents what your animals will be eating. Keep in mind that every field …

Two-Phase Decay Of Aerobic Sludge Shown By Online Fluorescence And Modeled With Interaction Of Heterotrophs And Nitrifiers, Xu Li, Lu-Kwang Ju Mar 2002

Two-Phase Decay Of Aerobic Sludge Shown By Online Fluorescence And Modeled With Interaction Of Heterotrophs And Nitrifiers, Xu Li, Lu-Kwang Ju

Chemical, Biomolecular, and Corrosion Engineering Faculty Research

Both heterotrophs and autotrophic nitrifiers are present in aerobic sludge digestion systems. The endogenous heterotrophic metabolism releases ammonium that, via oxidation to nitrite and nitrate, serves as the energy substrate for growth and survival of nitrifiers. The population interaction was used to explain the two-phase decay behavior observed in this study for the biosolids collected from rotating biological contactors (RBC) as well as the mixed primary and secondary sludge. Separated by an intermediate transition, the two phases followed different first-order decay kinetics, with the first phase being much faster. The two-phase phenomenon was supported by the on-line fluorescence profile monitored …

Removal Of Antibiotics From Surface And Distilled Water In Conventional Water Treatment Processes, Craig D. Adams, Yang Wang, K. Loftin, M. Meyer

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Conventional drinking water treatment processes were evaluated under typical water treatment plant conditions to determine their effectiveness in the removal of seven common antibiotics: carbadox, sulfachlorpyridazine, sulfadimethoxine, sulfamerazine, sulfamethazine, sulfathiazole, and trimethoprim. Experiments were conducted using synthetic solutions prepared by spiking both distilled/ deionized water and Missouri River water with the studied compounds. Sorption on Calgon WPH powdered activated carbon, reverse osmosis, and oxidation with chlorine and ozone under typical plant conditions were all shown to be effective in removing the studied antibiotics. Conversely, coagulation/flocculation/sedimentation with alum and iron salts, excess lime/soda ash softening, ultraviolet irradiation at disinfection dosages, and …

Pulmonary inflammation increases nitric oxide (NO) production via inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS). This study was performed to determine some of the factors that affect the availability of the NOS substrate, L-arginine (L-arg), in the intact lung subjected to silica-induced inflammation. Nitrate production, as an index of NO production, was significantly greater in silica-exposed lungs (53.5 ± 12.1 nmol/90 min) compared with controls (22.5 ±5.1 nmol/90 min, P < 0.05). This was accompanied by greater (P< 0.0001) 90-min [3H]L-arg uptake (62 ± 3% control, 82 ± 1% silica), a significantly (P < 0.005) increased permeability-surface area product for L-arg(0.28 ± 0.05 ml/min control, 0.63 ± 0.07 ml/min silica), and asignificantly (P < 0.001) increased urea production (1.16 ± 0.08µmol/90 min control, 1.77 ± 0.06 µmol/90 min silica). There was no difference in eNOS protein between groups and eNOS mRNA was not detectable in either group, whereas silica exposure resulted in the appearance of both iNOS protein and mRNA. Silica exposure increased CAT-1 and CAT-2 mRNA ~ 8-fold compared with controls. We conclude that the increase in NO production in silica-exposed lungs was associated with increased L-arg uptake from the vasculature, presumably resulting from increased CAT-1 and CAT-2, and by increased L-arg metabolism via arginase.

Maintaining Marshallese Fundamentals With Christian Fundamentalism, Linda Allen Mar 2002

Maintaining Marshallese Fundamentals With Christian Fundamentalism, Linda Allen

Pacific Studies

From 1902–1903 Emile Durkheim offered a series of lectures at the Sorbonne in which he suggested that participation in a “moral community” compels us to recognize ourselves in the collectivity and to commit ourselves to moral goals of the group. This essay discusses the formation of a Durkheimian community by migrants from the Republic of the Marshall Islands to the midwestern city of Enid, Oklahoma, and attempts to identify the political and economic factors that made the community’s formation possible. More important, however, this essay explains why this particular moral community became essential for the social and psychological survival of …

Is There A Constitutional Right To Clone?, Cass R. Sunstein Mar 2002

Is There A Constitutional Right To Clone?, Cass R. Sunstein

Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers

Recent scientific innovations, and proposed legislation, have raised questions about the nature of the constitutional right to reproductive freedom, and in particular about whether there is a constitutional “right to clone.” This essay urges that as a matter of substantive due process, rationality review is probably appropriate, and that restrictions on both reproductive and therapeutic cloning would and should survive constitutional scrutiny. At the same time, many of the arguments for banning both forms of cloning are based on ignorance, myths, and speculation. It is extremely important to distinguish between reproductive and nonreproductive cloning, and it is equally important to …

Short-Circuiting Long-Lived Humoral Immunity By The Heightened Engagement Of Cd40, Loren D. Erickson, Brigit G. Durell, Laura A. Vogel, Brian P. Connor, Marilia Cascalho, Teruhito Yasui, Hitoshi Kikutani, Randolph J. Noelle

Dartmouth Scholarship

Agonistic αCD40 Ab’s have been shown to be potent immune adjuvants for both cell- and humoral-mediated immunity. While enhancing short-lived humoral immunity, the administration of a CD40 agonist during thymus-dependent immune responses ablates germinal center formation, prematurely terminates the humoral immune response, blocks the generation of B cell memory, and prevents the generation of long-lived bone marrow plasma cells. Interestingly, some of these effects of heightened CD40 engagement could be mimicked by enhancing the magnitude of antigen-specific T cell help. Taken together, these studies demonstrate that as the magnitude of CD40 signaling intensifies, the fate of antigen-reactive B cells can …
