FOCUS on Boise State

Boise State observes its 70th anniversary this year, and to mark the occasion, the staff of FOCUS has selected 70 alumni of note to illustrate the depth and breadth of the achievements of those who have attended what began as Boise Junior College in 1932. From Nat Adams to Christian Zimmerman n (both of whom were decorated for heroism), our list contains physicians and filmmakers, educators and executives, athletes and authors, soldiers and scientists along with many others - all of them outstanding in their own way. Effectiveness Of Current Therapy Of Bacterial Vaginosis, Petya M Andreeva, Hatim A. Omar Apr 2002

Effectiveness Of Current Therapy Of Bacterial Vaginosis, Petya M Andreeva, Hatim A. Omar

Pediatrics Faculty Publications

The study was conducted in order to evaluate effectiveness of the treatment of bacterial vaginosis (BV) with different therapeutic regimes according to recommendations of the World Health Organization (WHO). During a one-year period (February 2000-February 2001) the Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD) Center was visited by 482 women aged 14-51. The diagnosis of BV was established by standard methods: Amsel's clinical criteria and Gram stain of vaginal discharge. The first-line treatment was oral Metronidazole 2 g single dose. Second line was Metronidazole 500 mg twice daily orally for 7 days or oral Clindamycin 300 mg twice daily for seven days. BV …

A Cycle Of Vam7p Release From And Ptdins 3-P–Dependent Rebinding To The Yeast Vacuole Is Required For Homotypic Vacuole Fusion, Christine Boeddinghaus, Alexey J. Merz, Rico Laage, Christian Ungermann Apr 2002

A Cycle Of Vam7p Release From And Ptdins 3-P–Dependent Rebinding To The Yeast Vacuole Is Required For Homotypic Vacuole Fusion, Christine Boeddinghaus, Alexey J. Merz, Rico Laage, Christian Ungermann

Dartmouth Scholarship

Vacuole fusion requires a coordinated cascade of priming, docking, and fusion. SNARE proteins have been implicated in the fusion itself, although their precise role in the cascade remains unclear. We now report that the vacuolar SNAP-23 homologue Vam7p is a mobile element of the SNARE complex, which moves from an initial association with the cis-SNARE complex via a soluble intermediate to the docking site. Soluble Vam7p is specifically recruited to vacuoles and can rescue a fusion reaction poisoned with antibodies to Vam7p. Both the recombinant Vam7p PX domain and a FYVE domain construct of human Hrs block the recruitment of …

Use Of The Caulobacter Crescentus Genome Sequence To Develop A Method For Systematic Genetic Mapping, Craig Stephens, Lisandra West, Desiree Yang Apr 2002

Use Of The Caulobacter Crescentus Genome Sequence To Develop A Method For Systematic Genetic Mapping, Craig Stephens, Lisandra West, Desiree Yang

Biology

The functional analysis of sequenced genomes will be facilitated by the development of tools for the rapid mapping of mutations. We have developed a systematic approach to genetic mapping in Caulobacter crescentus that is based on bacteriophage-mediated transduction of strategically placed antibiotic resistance markers. The genomic DNA sequence was used to identify sites distributed evenly around the chromosome at which plasmids could be nondisruptively integrated. DNA fragments from these sites were amplified by PCR and cloned into a kanamycin-resistant (Kanr) suicide vector. Delivery of these plasmids into C. crescentus resulted in integration via homologous recombination. A set of 41 strains …

Daughter Of Liberty Wedded To Law: Gender And Legal Education At The University Of Pennsylvania Department Of Law 1870-1900, Bridget J. Crawford Apr 2002

Daughter Of Liberty Wedded To Law: Gender And Legal Education At The University Of Pennsylvania Department Of Law 1870-1900, Bridget J. Crawford

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

Using the University of Pennsylvania's Law Department and, to some extent, the figure of Carrie Burnham Kilgore as lenses, this article examines a thirty year period of major changes in legal education. In Part I, Prof. Crawford describes the historical roots of the school and its halting establishment in light of the predominant role individual lawyers played in training students through law office clerkships. Part II details several related changes in the legal profession in the 1870s: the law office declined in prominence; bar associations became more active; and law schools developed rigorous requirements. In particular, Prof. Crawford describes the …

The Child As Other: Race And Differential Treatment In The Juvenile Justice System, Kenneth B. Nunn Apr 2002

The Child As Other: Race And Differential Treatment In The Juvenile Justice System, Kenneth B. Nunn

UF Law Faculty Publications

In this Article, I will focus on the treatment of African American children as the "other" in the juvenile justice system. As previously stated, African American children are not the only ones who may be treated as the "other." Latino, Native American, Asian, and even white children may be "othered" in the appropriate social context. My concern here, however, is with African American children. I focus on their condition because I believe it is exemplary of how all children who are perceived as children of the "other" are treated and because, in some ways, the treatment of African American children, …

Out Of The Shadows: Traversing The Imaginary Of Sameness, Difference, And Relationalism - A Human Rights Proposal, Berta E. Hernández-Truyol Apr 2002

Out Of The Shadows: Traversing The Imaginary Of Sameness, Difference, And Relationalism - A Human Rights Proposal, Berta E. Hernández-Truyol

UF Law Faculty Publications

This work seeks to develop a methodology that serves a women's anti-subordination project. To achieve this goal, Part II sets out the theoretical background of feminist theory (II.A) and three waves of feminism (II.B). Part II.C articulates the feminist revelations about law these analytical frameworks have engendered.

This project sets out to craft a methodology that can assist the goal of full personhood for women. Women's full personhood is a substantive concept that, as detailed in Part III, I ground on international human rights notions of fundamental rights - rights that we have, or ought to have, because we are …
