Fish Assemblages Associated With Artificial Reefs Of Concrete Aggregates Or Quarry Stone Offshore Miami Beach, Florida, Usa, Brian K. Walker, Bruce Henderson, Richard E. Spieler

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles

Few studies have compared the suitability of different artificial reef construction materials in terms of their efficacy in acquiring diverse faunal assemblages. We compared the fishes associated with 12 co-located reefs constructed of limestone quarry boulders, concrete-gravel aggregate, or concrete-tire aggregate (four of each substrate) in 7 m of water, 200 m offshore Miami Beach, Florida, USA. All 12 reefs were deployed 100 m apart the same day in two lines of six. The four quarry stone reefs consist of a pile of 50 boulders each. The remaining eight reefs, of concrete-gravel aggregate and concrete-tire aggregate, were each constructed with …

The Precautionary Principle In The International Arena, Mary Stevens Apr 2002

The Precautionary Principle In The International Arena, Mary Stevens

PEEL Alumni Scholarship

The purpose of this paper is to introduce the precautionary principle in terms of its history, use, and application in several different international agreements. The precautionary principle is preventative in nature and stems from the idea that just because an activity cannot be proven unsafe does not mean that it does not have any negative effects. It has been heralded and criticized by scientists alike, and it has been applied in so many different ways that its definition depends on which international agreement one is reading.

Locating Postmodern Epistemology, Organizational Structure And Postcolonial Workers In The Knowledge Rhizome, Viren Mascarenhas Apr 2002

Locating Postmodern Epistemology, Organizational Structure And Postcolonial Workers In The Knowledge Rhizome, Viren Mascarenhas

Honors Theses

The three excerpts from Amitav Ghosh's novels find the main characters speculating about the relationship between organizational structures, epistemology and knowledge production. In the first excerpt, Arjun tells Dinu that he does not believe that the colonial bureaucracy known as the British Anny will continue to exist if the policy of separating Indian and British officers persists. Anticipating the problems created from Indians holding leadership positions, he doubts that the British Anny "can go on." Murugan explains how the counter-scientists operate in the second excerpt, noting that members were revising epistemology by distorting knowledge through mutation. They were not following …

Tying Prometheus Down: The International Law Of Human Genetic Manipulation, Stephen P. Marks Apr 2002

Tying Prometheus Down: The International Law Of Human Genetic Manipulation, Stephen P. Marks

Chicago Journal of International Law

International legal regulation is required either to protect humans from potential harm-an interest all governments share-or to protect proprietary or financial interests of significance to international commerce-a concern of governments supportive of the business interests of individuals or corporations under their jurisdiction. What international law there is in this field appears to respond to these two sets of often conflicting concerns. I will begin with the assumptions underlying the specific instruments of international law that address genetic manipulation and then focus on the human rights implications of these technologies. In conclusion, I will refer to the push for new treaties …

Lessons From The Balkans For American Foreign Policy: Building Civil Society Within A Multilateral Framework, Henry H. Perritt Jr. Apr 2002

Lessons From The Balkans For American Foreign Policy: Building Civil Society Within A Multilateral Framework, Henry H. Perritt Jr.

Chicago Journal of International Law

The end of the Cold War left the world without a structure of international relations. The first Bush Administration briefly flirted with the vague idea of a New World Order. The Clinton Administration pursued a policy of selective intervention with an emphasis on development of civil society and human rights, as in Bosnia and Kosovo. The second Bush Administration came to office preaching disengagement, unilateral pursuit of US interests, suspicion of multilateralism, preoccupation with threats from China and Russia, and a determination to implement an unproven national missile defense system. In the war on terrorism, the Bush Administration arranged a …

White-Tailed Deer Browsing On Six Shrub Species Of Tallgrass Prairie, Dirk-Jan Van Der Hoek, Alan K. Knapp, John M. Briggs, Jan Bokdam Apr 2002

White-Tailed Deer Browsing On Six Shrub Species Of Tallgrass Prairie, Dirk-Jan Van Der Hoek, Alan K. Knapp, John M. Briggs, Jan Bokdam

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

White-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) populations have in the past, and continue today, to increase in the Great Plains and North America. However, their impact on native plant species and endangered ecosystems such as the tallgrass prairie is poorly documented. To better understand the consequences of increasing deer numbers for native shrubs in grasslands, we assessed the extent of their summer browsing activity on six shrub species (wild plum, rough-leaved dogwood, smooth sumac, fragrant sumac, and coralberry) along transects that spanned riparian margins to upland tallgrass prairie. The proportion of terminal shoots browsed was quantified along established white-tail deer …

Review Of The Essential Aldo Leopold: Quotations And Commentaries Edited By Curt D. Meine And Richard L. Knight, Thomas R. Dunlap Apr 2002

Review Of The Essential Aldo Leopold: Quotations And Commentaries Edited By Curt D. Meine And Richard L. Knight, Thomas R. Dunlap

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

A book of quotations is always suspect, and one on Leopold doubly so. The form suggests hagiography, which Leopold scholarship does not need, or the desire to make accessible an important but obscure body of thought, which is not the case with Leopold. Even more alarming, the editors have arranged Leopold's ideas into categories, although one of his great strengths was his willingness to think across intellectual boundaries. Dipping into the collection, however, allays all fears. This volume gives the general reader a good, well-organized look at Leopold's ideas. Scholars get a lot more: a wealth of quotations for lectures …

That Fine Little House, Rosalie Otero Apr 2002

That Fine Little House, Rosalie Otero

Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive

I was intrigued by Sam Schuman’s allegory about liberal arts education using Virginia Lee Burton’s story of The Little House. Sam points out that it was not the little house that changed, but its neighborhood. I would argue that not only the neighborhood changed, but what went on inside the little house. Like most people, my first house was small, and the activities that went on within our house generally centered around a young family and a new career. As the years progressed, I moved to a larger house, and the activities changed from managing teenagers to grandchildren and …

Enterococcus Faecalis Acetoacetyl-Coenzyme A Thiolase/3-Hydroxy-3-Methylglutaryl-Coenzyme A Reductase, A Dual-Function Protein Of Isopentenyl Diphosphate Biosynthesis, Matija Hedl, Autumn Sutherlin, E. Imogen Wilding, Marie Mazzulla, Damien Mcdevitt, Pamela Lane, John W. Burgner Ii, Kevin R. Lehnbeuter, Cynthia V. Stauffacher, Michael N. Gwynn, Victor W. Rodwell

Bindley Publications

Many bacteria employ the nonmevalonate pathway for synthesis of isopentenyl diphosphate, the monomer unit for isoprenoid biosynthesis. However, gram-positive cocci exclusively use the mevalonate pathway, which is essential for their growth (E. I. Wilding et al., J. Bacteriol. 182:4319–4327, 2000). Enzymes of the mevalonate pathway are thus potential targets for drug intervention. Uniquely, the enterococci possess a single open reading frame, mvaE, that appears to encode two enzymes of the mevalonate pathway, acetoacetyl-coenzyme A thiolase and 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-coenzyme A (HMG-CoA) reductase. Western blotting revealed that the mvaE gene product is a single polypeptide in Enterococcus faecalis, Enterococcus faecium, and Enterococcus hirae. …

Distribution Of Eastern Woodrats In A Grassland-Woodland Mosaic: Influence Of Vegetation And Fire, Jon P. Beckmann, Glennis A. Kaufman, Donald Kaufman

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

The eastern woodrat is a characteristic, charismatic rodent in the prairie region. We assessed the distribution of eastern woodrats (Neotoma floridana) within the mosaic of interspersed grasslands and woodlands on the Konza Prairie Biological Station. In summer 1996 we recorded the placement of eastern woodrat nests in 10 areas that differed in prescribed fire regimes. Although most vegetation in our study sites (>90% of the area) was native tallgrass prairie, all of the nests (n = 122) were associated with woody-shrubby vegetation. Nests of the eastern woodrat were more common along limestone outcrops that had trees and …

Spatial Description And Analysis Of Grasshopper Abundances In Colorado Rangeland, Kerri Skinner, R. Dennis Child, Thomas O. Holtzer Apr 2002

Spatial Description And Analysis Of Grasshopper Abundances In Colorado Rangeland, Kerri Skinner, R. Dennis Child, Thomas O. Holtzer

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Although rangeland grasshopper populations have been studied for more than 120 years, little is known of the spatial patterns in grasshopper numbers between outbreak cycles. This information is necessary to understand how grasshopper outbreaks develop and to correctly design research, monitoring, and modeling projects. We used exploratory data analysis and geostatistics to identify the spatial patterns in grasshopper numbers for 1993 through 1997 in Colorado. The same family of models (spherical) provided the best fit to the sample data for all years, which implies that similar processes influenced grasshopper densities over these years. The parameters of the models differed among …
