Dealing With Fear And Depression In A 21st-Century Context, Carrie Maxwell Wrigley Apr 2002

Dealing With Fear And Depression In A 21st-Century Context, Carrie Maxwell Wrigley

Issues in Religion and Psychotherapy

Therapy in the 21st century cannot be guided soley by attention to intra-psychic or intra-familial factors. As the surrounding social and cultural environment continues to become more unstable, threatening, and dangerous, fear and depression become increasingly common, reality-based responses. These reponses are not a surprise to those acquainted with ancient and modern scriptures, which predict times of unprecedented trouble with accompanying widespread terror and despair; and which also identifies an alternative, more healthful response to the context of our current social enviroment. Finally, it articulates what AMCAP and its individual members can do to ""public peace"" in these times of …

Survival Of And Herbivore Damage To A Cohort Of Quercus Rubra Planted Across A Forest-Old-Field Edge, Scott J. Meiners, Matthew J. Matinkovic

Faculty Research & Creative Activity

Forest edges are known to affect plant community composition and habitat use by animals. However, the direct influence of edges in determining patterns of tree regeneration is poorly understood. Survival of and herbivore damage to Quercus ruln-a seedlings were experimentally determined for seedlings planted across a forest--old-field edge gradient. Seedling survival was lowest inside the forest ( 1%), intermediate at the edge (25%) and highest within the old-field portion of the gradient (49%). Deer herbivory decreased with increasing distance into the old field. Seedling survival increased under Rosa multiflora and decreased in plots with mammalian herbivory. Seedling height was significantly …

The Long-Term Ecosystem Observatory: An Integrated Coastal Observatory, Oscar Schofield, Trisha Bergmann, Paul Bissett, J. Frederick Grassle, Dale B. Haidvogel, Josh Kohut, Mark A. Moline, Scott M. Glenn

Biological Sciences

An integrated ocean observatory has been developed and operated in the coastal waters off the central coast of New Jersey, USA. One major goal for the Long-term Ecosystem Observatory (LEO) is to develop a real-time capability for rapid environmental assessment and physical/biological forecasting in coastal waters. To this end, observational data are collected from satellites, aircrafts, ships, fixed/relocatable moorings and autonomous underwater vehicles. The majority of the data are available in real-time allowing for adaptive sampling of episodic events and are assimilated into ocean forecast models. In this observationally rich environment, model forecast errors are dominated by uncertainties in the …

A New Auv Platform For Studying Near Shore Bioluminescence Structure, Mark A. Moline, S. Blackwell, J. Case, S. Glenn, J. Kohut, O. Schofield, M. Purcell, C. Vonalt Apr 2002

A New Auv Platform For Studying Near Shore Bioluminescence Structure, Mark A. Moline, S. Blackwell, J. Case, S. Glenn, J. Kohut, O. Schofield, M. Purcell, C. Vonalt

Biological Sciences

Peaks in bioluminescence are often associated with small spatial features including frontal boundaries, vertical thin-layers, and convergence/divergence zones.1,2 Due to the highly variable nature of these features in the near shore environment, accurate assessment of bioluminescence potential is dependent upon the application of appropriate platforms and the use of these platforms at relevant time and space scales. Both traditional shipboard profiling techniques and moored vertical profiling instrumentation fail to adequately provide the appropriate spatial resolution to explain the dynamics of near shore bioluminescence. In an effort to resolve the mechanisms underlying the temporal and spatial variation in near shore …

Periodic Maintenance For On-Site Wastewater Treatment Systems, Russell Derickson Apr 2002

Periodic Maintenance For On-Site Wastewater Treatment Systems, Russell Derickson

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

The key to preventing on-site wastewater treatment system problems is to follow a regular septic tank pumping schedule — every three to five years Septic tanks trap solids and floating materials and prevent them from entering the soil treatment field. After anaerobic bacterial action, these materials are converted into sludge and floating scum. Solids or scum that escape a septic tank plug soil pores and slow the soil's acceptance rates of septic tank effluent and cause on-site systems to backup. Pumping septic tanks after backup problems occur only provides a short-term remedy, usually 2-3 days, until the tank refills with …

Swine Facility Location And Odor Dispersion, Chuck Ullery

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

Although some odor occurs on every livestock facility, its production and impacts to adjacent land users can be controlled by: • Good site location. • Proper design, construction, management, and maintenance of appropriate manure collection, storage, treatment and transport systems. • Appropriate land application or disposal systems. This presentation covers general site selection factors that affect dispersion of odors after they are produced.

Fisheries Research Report No. 133 - Preliminary Assessment And Seasonal Fluctuations In The Fish Biota Inhabiting The Concentrator Ponds Of Dampier Salt, Port Hedland, With Options For The Potential Application Of Results, Brett Molony, Gareth Parry Apr 2002

Fisheries Research Report No. 133 - Preliminary Assessment And Seasonal Fluctuations In The Fish Biota Inhabiting The Concentrator Ponds Of Dampier Salt, Port Hedland, With Options For The Potential Application Of Results, Brett Molony, Gareth Parry

Fisheries Research Reports

The concentrator ponds (CPs) of Dampier Salt, Port Hedland, cover an area in excess of 7 300 ha. Water is pumped from two adjacent, mangrove-lined estuaries at certain times of the year and small and larvae fishes are carried into the ponds, becoming trapped. A survey of the fish biota within the CPs was undertaken at four time periods between May 2000 and February 2001 to identify the species of fishes present and to estimate their abundances and distribution throughout the CPs. Further, the Artemia resources within the CPs were also assessed for identification of species and quality.

Fisheries Research Report No. 134, Vol 1 - Towards An Assessment Of The Natural And Human Use Impacts On The Marine Environment Of The Abrolhos Islands, F J. Webster, C J. Dibden, C F. Chubb Apr 2002

Fisheries Research Report No. 134, Vol 1 - Towards An Assessment Of The Natural And Human Use Impacts On The Marine Environment Of The Abrolhos Islands, F J. Webster, C J. Dibden, C F. Chubb

Fisheries Research Reports

The State Territorial Waters surrounding the Abrolhos Islands are gazetted as a Fish Habitat Protection Area and vested with the Minister for Fisheries under the Fish Resources Management Act 1994. Three Fisheries Management Papers have identified management priorities for the marine environment at the Abrolhos Islands:

  • Management of the Houtman Abrolhos System
  • Aquaculture Plan for the Houtman Abrolhos Islands
  • Sustainable Tourism Plan for the Houtman Abrolhos Islands.

These plans and other national and international obligations to examine the effect of extractive and non-extractive anthropogenic activities on marine habitats (eg. Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999) led to …
