Richmond Lake Water Quality Project: Septic Systems On Shoreline Property, Joseph Schumacher

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

Richmond Lake shoreline septic systems require special consideration. That's because soil and water conditions near the shoreline may make the systems less efficient in treating waste. This in turn could cause harmful pollutants to reach the lake.

Modeling, Fabrication, And Optimization Of Niobium Cavities: Phase Ii, Robert A. Schill Jr., Mohamed Trabia Apr 2002

Modeling, Fabrication, And Optimization Of Niobium Cavities: Phase Ii, Robert A. Schill Jr., Mohamed Trabia

Transmutation Sciences Materials (TRP)

Niobium cavities are important parts of the integrated NC/SC high-power linacs. Over the years, researchers in several countries have tested various cavity shapes. They concluded that elliptically shaped cells are the most appropriate shape for superconducting cavities. The need for very clean surfaces led to the use of a buffered chemical polishing procedure for surface cleaning to get good performance of the cavities. This proposal discusses the second phase of research in the second year of the project.

The first phase (starting Summer 2001) has resulted in improving the basic understanding of multipacting and the process of chemical etching. Based …

Richmond Lake Water Quality Project: Citizen's Guide To Environmental Terminology, Cooperative Extension Apr 2002

Richmond Lake Water Quality Project: Citizen's Guide To Environmental Terminology, Cooperative Extension

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

In recent years, environmental issues have received considerable media coverage. Yet, because of the technical terms that often accompany such stories, it is sometimes difficult to analyze these reports. This guide will provide you with a concise reference to many environmental terms used in the news, especially those referenced with water pollution issues. It is hoped that with this guide, you will be able to more objectively view not only popular press news items, but also technical reports that may be prepared at the local, state or national level.

Alternative Bedding Materials, Steve Pohl Apr 2002

Alternative Bedding Materials, Steve Pohl

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

Alternative bedding materials may be a necessity for livestock producers when small grain straw is in short supply. If handled properly, almost any kind of fibrous material can be effective bedding. However, the method of manure handling and storage, and overall livestock health may restrict the use of certain bedding materials. The approximate water absorbing capacities, the number of pounds of water absorbed per pound of dry bedding (typically 10 %), are shown in the following table.

Hot Weather Precautions For Pouring Concrete, Steve Pohl Apr 2002

Hot Weather Precautions For Pouring Concrete, Steve Pohl

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

High temperatures accelerate the hardening of concrete and more water is generally required to maintain workable consistencies. If the water-cement ratio is not maintained by adding additional cement, strength and durability will be reduced. For example, if the temperature of concrete is increased from 50 degrees F to 100 degrees F, about 33 pounds (roughly four gallons) of additional water is needed per cubic yard of concrete to maintain a three-inch slump. If the water content of concrete is increased without increasing the cement content, the strength and other properties of concrete are adversely affected.

Till For A Reason, Bob Durland Apr 2002

Till For A Reason, Bob Durland

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

When tilling a field there should be a reason for the tillage, whether it's to kill the weeds, breakup a compaction layer, prepare a seedbed, or in an emergency, stop erosion. Regardless of the reason, every tillage operation is going to remove some surface plant residue and expose the soil for some loss of moisture. In a dry year, particularly, as much residue should be left on the surface as possible. This protects the soil surface from erosion and also catches more snow in the winter which in-turn provides good moisture for starting the crop in the spring. As much …
