The Anchor, Volume 115.22: April 17, 2002, Hope College

The Anchor: 2002

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

Distance Activism And The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, Julie M. Raymond-Yakoubian Apr 2002

Distance Activism And The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, Julie M. Raymond-Yakoubian

Political Science

The growing phenomenon of distance place attachment and distance activism can be seen in the extensive network of non-visitors involved in the protection of places like the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska. This type of activism is not an anomaly, but rather an increasingly significant global phenomenon, which has gone largely unexamined by researchers of environmentalism, activism, wilderness, and place attachment. Distance activism encompasses the standard definition of activism, with the addition that distance activists must not have had physical contact with the natural environment for which they are being active. I argue that distance activists' actions and beliefs …

Application Of Natural Channel Design Principles In Conversion Of A Multiple-Thread To Single-Thread Channel On An Alluvial Fan: Mccallum Creek, Alaska, Christopher Hume Roach Apr 2002

Application Of Natural Channel Design Principles In Conversion Of A Multiple-Thread To Single-Thread Channel On An Alluvial Fan: Mccallum Creek, Alaska, Christopher Hume Roach

Theses (Unassigned)

McCallum Creek crosses the Trans Alaska Pipeline in the Central Alaska Range near Paxson, Alaska. It was converted from a braided channel on an alluvial fan to a stable single thread channel at the pipeline crossing. Objectives included controlling the position of the channel at the pipeline and minimizing aufeis accumulations through the converted reach. A natural channel design methodology was used, which involves determining the dimension, pattern, and profile of a stable reference reach for the associated valley type and stream type and emulating those characteristics in the design reach. A failure mode analysis was conducted. Mitigative measures were …

Phylogeography Of Moose (Alces Alces): Genetic Signatures Of Population History, Kris Joseph Hundertmark Apr 2002

Phylogeography Of Moose (Alces Alces): Genetic Signatures Of Population History, Kris Joseph Hundertmark

Biological Sciences

Through analysis of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) sequences, I examined phylogeographic relationships among moose (Alces alces) from Europe, Asia, and North America and inferred historic population trends explaining present-day structure of genetic variance. Diversity of nucleotide composition in cytochrome b was low worldwide, with no variation detected among North American moose. The North American lineage was more closely related to European than to Asian lineages, indicating a recent colonization of North America and refuting the theory of eastern and western races of moose. An analysis of the control region provided greater resolution, which revealed similar yet more detailed patterns, including detectable …

Vertebral Pathologies In Skeletons Of Alaskan Eskimos From Golovin Bay And Nunivak Island, Scott Stephen Legge Apr 2002

Vertebral Pathologies In Skeletons Of Alaskan Eskimos From Golovin Bay And Nunivak Island, Scott Stephen Legge

Anthropology

The primary objectives of this dissertation are to analyze vertebral pathologies by comparing two Native Alaskan skeletal collections, and assessing these results in terms of the patterning of genetically controlled versus activity related lesions. Skeletal collections housed at the Smithsonian Institution were requested for repatriation by the residents of Golovin Bay and Nunivak Island in 1993 and 1994, respectively. Prior to reburial, the remains were analyzed utilizing the Smithsonian Protocol of Skeletal Analysis (Urcid and Byrd, 1995) at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. Vertebral anomalies and pathologies observed in this study include spondylolysis, spina bifida occulta, Schmorl's nodes, osteoarthritis, transitional …

Optical Remote Sensing Of Snow On Sea Ice: Ground Measurements, Satellite Data Analysis, And Radiative Transfer Modeling, Xiaobing Zhou Apr 2002

Optical Remote Sensing Of Snow On Sea Ice: Ground Measurements, Satellite Data Analysis, And Radiative Transfer Modeling, Xiaobing Zhou

Geosciences

The successful launch of the Terra satellite on December 18, 1999 opened a new era of earth observation from space. This thesis is motivated by the need for validation and promotion of the use of snow and sea ice products derived from MODIS, one of the main sensors aboard the Terra and Aqua satellites. Three cruises were made in the Southern Ocean, in the Ross, Amundsen and Bellingshausen seas. Measurements of all-wave albedo, spectral albedo, BRDF, snow surface temperature, snow grain size, and snow stratification etc. were carried out on pack ice floes and landfast ice. In situ measurements were …

Millennial To Annual Scale Paleoclimatic Change In Central Alaska During The Late Quaternary Interpreted From Lake Sediments And Tree Rings, Valerie Ann Barber Apr 2002

Millennial To Annual Scale Paleoclimatic Change In Central Alaska During The Late Quaternary Interpreted From Lake Sediments And Tree Rings, Valerie Ann Barber

Oceanography

The theme of this dissertation is the importance of effective moisture (precipitation minus evaporation) in subarctic ecosystems. Interior Alaska has a relatively dry climate with annual precipitation ranging from 25--45 cm. Records from interior Alaska lake sediment cores show low lake levels following the Last Glacial Maximum, with significant increases at 12,000 and 9,000 14C years BP. Using lake-level reconstructions and models based on modern hydrologic and meteorologic data, we infer precipitation of 35--75% less than modern at 12,000 yr. BP, 25--45% less than modern at 9,000 yr. BP, and 10--20% less than modern at 6,000 yr. BP. Trees were …
