A New Species Of The Beetle Genus Brachypsectra From The Dominican Republic, With Fossil Connections (Coleoptera: Brachypsectridae), Robert E. Woodruff

With the description of Brachypsectra vivafosile n. sp., from the Cabo Rojo desert area of Hispaniola, the beetle family Brachypsectridae now contains 4 described species. The family was originally known from the Dominican Republic by Miocene amber fossils of larvae. Genitalia are illustrated for the first time for the family. Relationships of the family within the Elateroidea are briefly discussed.

Review Of Noterapion Kissinger From Chile And Argentina (Coleoptera: Apionidae), David G. Kissinger

Descriptions and a key are provided for 7 South American species of Noterapion Kissinger (2002) (type species Apion meorrhynchum, Philippi and Philippi) including N. bruchi (Beguin-Billecocq), N. meorrhynchum (Philippi and Philippi), N. philippianum (Alonso-Zarazaga) and four new species described from Chile: N. chilense Kissinger, N. kuscheli Kissinger, N. nothofagi Kissinger, and N. saperion Kissinger. A lectotype designation is published for Apion meorrhynchum Philippi and Philippi and Apion vestitum Philippi and Philippi. Apion fuegianum Enderlein and A. pingue Beguin-Billecocq are synonymized with N. meorrhynchum (Philippi and Philippi), new synonymy.

The beetle family Cerambycidae is a favorite of many collectors and has been the focus of studies in the southeastern United States. Recent collecting has revealed significant new biological and distribution information for 33 cerambycid species. Included are five new state records and one new country record. Host plants are reported for the first time for 31 species. Unless otherwise stated all collections were made by the author. Rearing was done by collecting infested plant material and placing it in individual clear plastic tubs, which were checked regularly for emerging specimens. A New Species Of Ceroplastes From Florida (Hemiptera: Coccoidea: Coccidae), Greg Hodges

Previous literature recognized twenty species of wax scales occurring in the Neartic region with nine of those occurring in Florida. This number has grown recently with the establishment of the Ceroplastes rusci and the discovery of C. feltyii (new species). A description and illustration of C. feltyii is provided along with a key to all of the wax scales currently found in Florida.

Three Bostrichid Beetles New To Florida (Coleoptera: Bostrichidae), Robert L. Beiriger

Three species of bostrichid beetles, previously unknown from Florida, were found in the Florida State Collection of Arthropods (FSCA) and in the Archbold Biological Station Collection. The genus Stephanopachys Waterhouse, in Florida, is now represented by four species. These new records probably represent infrequently collected species and not new introductions to Florida. A key to all species of Stephanopachys adults from Florida is presented.

Being among the most habitat diverse countries in the world (and plant diversity is about 22,000 sp.), Mexico has a Lepidoptera fauna recorded at about 14,385 species but is estimated to be over 22,000 species, if not much higher (some estimates go to 35,000 sp.). High Lepidoptera numbers in Mexico are also due to the large influx of tropical species from the border with Guatemala, as well as Mexican endemics. In this report, the Lepidoptera families are summarized for Mexico, giving known species and what experts estimate to be the true total for each family when all have been described. …

Luchoelmis New Genus is described with four new species: aequalis, magallanensis, and penai from Chile and cekalovici from Argentina and Chile. Luchoelmis penai is designated as the type species of the genus. A key to the four species is presented.

Adoptees are over represented in clinical populations. Issues of self-concept, identity formation and the search for background history may be of particular relevance to adoptee clients and could be addressed as a focus of treatment. This study attempted to assess if lack of knowledge about background information is related to poorer selfconcepts and increased difficulty with identity formation in adoptees. Adults (N=299) who were adopted prior to 6 months of age were recruited from adoption related sites on the Internet. Measures of self-concept, identity formation and adoption related factors were completed on a web page designed for this study. Results …

[Excerpt] “The public generally accepts the premise that exposure to radiation can have an undesirable effect. Furthermore, it believes that as the radiation dose increases, the magnitude of the effect will increase. In the year 2000, over one million children were involved in a new divorce. These statistics indicated that this subgroup of children would continue to be a large part of the school population. The school, because of time spent there, becomes a likely place for the recognition and identification of problems that may arise from parental divorce, thus providing an appropriate setting for interventions to be conducted.

The purpose of this study was to survey special education teachers and speech therapists in eleven school districts in Northeast Tennessee regarding their knowledge level (etiology and educational programming) of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The primary focus of the study was to identify effective programs and methods used by special educators in this region, comparing them to the latest techniques and teaching methods prescribed by recent research. In addition, identified weaknesses were used to recommend future training and staff development to enable educators to provide the best possible programs for children with autism.

Ultimately, this paper stems from two cultural strands which intersect in one cultural form, self-improvement advertising aimed at men. The first of these is the figure of the "new man," which appeared in the mid-1980s. The novelty lies in the positioning of masculine bodies precisely for the purpose of being seen. The available criticism was not equipped to account for these positionings. The second cultural strand, the proliferation of technologies which alter the body itself, as opposed to its coverings, makes the gap in the criticism more apparent. The investigation detailed in this paper attempts to utilize a Leaming Vector Quantization network in order to classify a set of mitochondrial proteins based upon their amino acid sequence. The Learning Vector Quantization network uses a nearest neighbor approach to classification. Input vectors are fed into the network, which produces output vectors. Those output vectors are then matched by means of a distance bias to a corresponding classification vector. The learning and test sets consisted of thirteen similar mitochodrial proteins from seventy-two different species. This provided a pool of over nine hundred proteins to use. A major tenet of African Tertiary biogeography posits that lowland rainforest dominated much of Africa in the late Cretaceous and was replaced by xeric vegetation as a response to continental uplift and consequent widespread aridification beginning in the late Paleogene. The aridification of Africa is thought to have been a major factor in the extinction of many African humid-tropical lineages, and in the present-day disparity of species diversity between Africa and other tropical regions. This primarily geologically based model can be tested with independent phylogenetic evidence from widespread African plant groups containing both humid- and xeric-adapted species. We estimated the …

We have developed new methods for calculating estimates for the mean and standard deviation of a normal population from left-censored samples. Some of these methods based on traditional estimating procedures. A new method of obtaining the Cohen maximum likelihood estimates for fx and cr without the aid of an auxiliary table will be introduced. The paucity o f research on females diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) precipitated this exploratory investigation into co-occurring disorders and selective substance use in females (n = 70), ranging in age between 10 and 25, diagnosed with ADHD and substance use disorder (SUD). Data extracted from archived substance abuse treatment center records were tested via chi-square analyses to determine proportional differences between frequencies in predetermined co-occurring disorder groups (disruptive behavior disorders, moodanxiety disorders, and learning disorders) and predetermined substance groups (stimulant, depressant, and cannabis) for the total ADHD cohort and for specific diagnoses (inattentive, hyperactive-impulsive, combined, and with …

The purpose of the study was to examine special needs adoption from the perspective of the adoptive parents. Using the general guidelines of grounded theory, the study analyzed secondary data from a post-adoption program providing services to families who adopted special needs children. The data revealed that adoptive parents function under a cultural script of special needs adoption. The cultural script influences how families view themselves, the environment around them and how they decide to function as adoptive families. A quantitative research design was utilized to examine and understand the perceptions of fatherhood and manhood held by unmarried African American adolescent fathers. In face-to-face 60-90 minute interviews using a semistructured interview guide developed by the researcher, participants were asked open-ended questions to provide these young men with a voice and an opportunity to express their needs, support, neglect, understanding, and perception of how society views them and its impact on the functioning of the family unit. Using purposeful sampling, 10 unmarried African American adolescent fathers, located in the southwestern area of Michigan, were interviewed for data collection.
