Known eukaryotic selenocysteine (Sec)-containing proteins are animal proteins, whereas selenoproteins have not been found in yeast and plants. Surprisingly, we detected selenoproteins in a member of the plant kingdom, Chlumydomonas reinhardtii, and directly identified two of them as phospholipid hydroperoxide glutathione peroxidase and selenoprotein W homologs. Moreover, a selenocysteyl-tRNA was isolated that recognized specifically the Sec codon UGA. Subsequent gene cloning and bioinformatics analyses identified eight additional selenoproteins, including methionine-Ssulfoxide reductase, a selenoprotein specific to Chlumydomonas. Chlumydomonas selenoprotein genes contained selenocysteine insertion sequence (SECIS) elements that were similar, but not identical, to those of animals. These SECIS elements could direct …

An Ecological Basis For Managing Giant Sequoia Ecosystems, Douglas D. Piirto, Robert R. Rogers Jul 2002

An Ecological Basis For Managing Giant Sequoia Ecosystems, Douglas D. Piirto, Robert R. Rogers

Natural Resources Management and Environmental Sciences

A strategy for management of giant sequoia groves is formulated using a conceptual framework for ecosystem management recently developed by Region Five of the USDA Forest Service. The framework includes physical, biological, and social dimensions. Environmental indicators and reference variability for key ecosystem elements are discussed in this paper. The selected ecosystem elements include: 1) attitudes, beliefs, and values; 2) economics and subsistence; 3) stream channel morphology; 4) sediment; 5) water; 6) fire; 7) organic debris; and 8) vegetation mosaic. Recommendations are made for the attributes of environmental indicators that characterize these elements. These elements and associated indicators will define …

Autoregressive Moving Average Models Of Crown Profiles For Two California Hardwood Species, Samantha J. Gill, Gregory S. Biging Jul 2002

Autoregressive Moving Average Models Of Crown Profiles For Two California Hardwood Species, Samantha J. Gill, Gregory S. Biging

Natural Resources Management and Environmental Sciences

Time-series Autoregressive Moving Average (ARMA) models were employed to model tree crown profiles for two California hardwood species (blue oak and interior live oak). There are three major components of these models: a polynomial trend, an ARMA model, and unaccounted for variation. The polynomial trend was used to achieve a stationary series. For these crown profiles, the use of a quadratic trend resulted in a stationary series for 60% of the profiles. A cubic trend was used for another 23%, and a quartic for 7%. It was found that 80% of the tree crown profiles could be modeled using a …

Parenting And Adult Development, Rob Palkovitz, Loren D. Marks, David W. Appleby, Erin Kramer Holmes Jul 2002

Parenting And Adult Development, Rob Palkovitz, Loren D. Marks, David W. Appleby, Erin Kramer Holmes

Faculty Publications and Presentations

It is likely that the more engaged a parent is, the more his or her adult development will be affected. Because there is a direct relationship between the degree of investment a person places in any developmental context and the outcome that the context exerts, it has been hypothesized that the developmental impact of parenting is directly related to its cumulative salience in relation to other contexts of development (Palkovitz, 1996). This chapter represents an attempt to summarize pertinent empirical findings, to further refine conceptual constructs, to elaborate upon their interactions and to facilitate understanding of the effects of parenting …

Madonnas And Whores: The Dichotomy Of Women's Roles As Portrayed In Women's Magazine Advertisements, Karen Celeste Kimbell Jul 2002

Madonnas And Whores: The Dichotomy Of Women's Roles As Portrayed In Women's Magazine Advertisements, Karen Celeste Kimbell

Theses & Dissertations

Advertising has played a vital role in the increase of the number and circulation of magazines. Women's magazines, in particular, are saturated with ads to the point where often the copy text and the advertisements are indistinguishable. Early in the history of women's magazines, advertisements focused on women's domestic role as mother and wife, offering products to improve the home and help with caring for the family. Soon, products for beauty enhancement began showing up in advertisements as well, and beauty products continue to be heavily marketed in women's magazines. With the women's sexual revolution, the notion of beauty changed …

Early Weaning Beef Calves, Kent Tjardes, Cody Wright, Don Boggs Jul 2002

Early Weaning Beef Calves, Kent Tjardes, Cody Wright, Don Boggs

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

Weaning calves earlier than the normal 6-7 months of age is a management practice that should be considered when pastures are short or quality is poor. Calves have been weaned successfully at less than 2 months of age. However, normal rumen function is not developed until approximately 120 days of age. Research has demonstrated that calves older than 90 days have satisfactory gains without being put on milk replacers. Calves can be placed in a drylot on a medium energy diet (NEg ≥0.45 Mcal/lb), on a higher quality pasture, or a pasture with supplemental creep feed.

Simple Spatially Distributed Model Of The Global Carbon Cycle And Its Dynamic Properties, Yuri Svirezhev Jul 2002

Simple Spatially Distributed Model Of The Global Carbon Cycle And Its Dynamic Properties, Yuri Svirezhev

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

A specially simplified spatially distributed model of the Global Carbon Cycle (GCC) is presentedthat is allowed to get a general solution and to study its basic dynamic properties (like spectral portrait, composition and decomposition of solutions, etc.). Assuming that the productivity depends linearly onconcentration of carbon in the atmosphere, the problem is reduced to a standard linear one. For calibrationthe Bazilevich data containing information on plant productivity, living biomass and soil organic matter ofdifferent biomes is used. Calculating the matrix eigenvalues of the basic linear problem we get its spectralportrait. The characteristic times change sufficiently smoothly from several years to several …

Indirect Effects In Ecosystems: A Review Of Recent Modelling Studies And A Methodological Framework For Comparative Theoretical Analysis, V. Krivtsov Jul 2002

Indirect Effects In Ecosystems: A Review Of Recent Modelling Studies And A Methodological Framework For Comparative Theoretical Analysis, V. Krivtsov

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Indirect interrelations between ecosystem processes are often realised after a considerable time lag, and, therefore, are easily overlooked. The understanding of these relationships, however, is indispensable forsustainable development and ecomanagement. Investigation of mechanisms underpinning complex indirectdelayed relationships is greatly aided by advanced mathematical techniques, including correlation, multipleregression and factor analysis, simulation modelling, etc. This paper provides a brief review of the recentrelevant studies. These techniques may be especially useful if used in concert on a range of ecosystems, thusintegrating the information obtained in a comparative theoretical ecosystem analysis (CTEA). Amethodological framework for CTEA is given and possible implications discussed.

A Model For The Trophic Food Web Of The Gulf Of Trieste, G. Cossarini, Cosimo Solidoro, A. Crise Jul 2002

A Model For The Trophic Food Web Of The Gulf Of Trieste, G. Cossarini, Cosimo Solidoro, A. Crise

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

The Gulf of Trieste is located in the northernmost part of the Adriatic Sea. It exhibits high variable hydrodynamical and trophic conditions, due to the interactions among the wind regime, characterised by impulsive strong wind events (Bora), the fresh water –nutrient rich- run off, especially from Isonzo river, the interaction with the general circulation of North Adriatic Sea, the seasonal heating and cooling of water and alternation of mixing and stratification of water column. Gulf is also characterised by occurrence of anomaly events as mucilagine. Despite the high inter-annual biological variability, it is possible to recognise the seasonal succession of …

Modelling Of Pop Environmental Persistence And Long Range Transport By Qsar And Chemometric Approaches, Paola Gramatica, Ester Papa, Stefano Pozzi Jul 2002

Modelling Of Pop Environmental Persistence And Long Range Transport By Qsar And Chemometric Approaches, Paola Gramatica, Ester Papa, Stefano Pozzi

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

The Long Range Transport (LRT) potential of chemicals is due to the combination of theirpersistence in the environment and their inherent tendency towards mobility, and is an undesirableproperty of POPs (Persistent Organic Pollutants). Finding the best combination of chemical properties tominimize LRT is a multicriteria problem that can be approached by MultiCriteria Decision-Making(MCDM) techniques. Utility functions have been applied to two proposed indexes, the “globalpersistence index” and the “mobility index”, allowing a ranking of the studied chemicals according totheir LRT potential. The “global persistence index” was obtained by linear combination, by PrincipalComponent Analysis of the half-life data in various environmental …

Ecological And Economic Modelling In Agricultural Land Use Scenarios, Bernd Münier, J. S. Schou, K. Birr-Pedersen Jul 2002

Ecological And Economic Modelling In Agricultural Land Use Scenarios, Bernd Münier, J. S. Schou, K. Birr-Pedersen

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Agricultural production and its associated land use comprise the most important key factor regarding biodiversity and environmental impact within the wider countryside in Denmark. Currently, a number of land use changes are implemented in environmental action plans, such as afforestation, restoring wetlands and protection of drinking water catchments. Growing attention is put on the potential of GIS (Geographical Information System) as spatial decision support tools in local and regional environmental impact assessment, planning and implementation of governmental policies at local level. The work presented is part of a multidisciplinary research project, addressing the consequences of changes in agricultural production with …

Exergy And Information Indices: A Comparison For Use In Structurally Dynamic Models, Brian D. Fath Jul 2002

Exergy And Information Indices: A Comparison For Use In Structurally Dynamic Models, Brian D. Fath

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Ecosystems are open, dynamic systems changing both their structure and their function over time. A model, which is an abstraction of the system manifest at the time of its construction, can project future dynamics so long as the fundamental structure of the system does not change. A primary modelling challenge arises when the system structure changes, i.e., internal reorganization, as a result of external perturbation. Ideally, one could include algorithms in the model to anticipate such changes, but that would entail knowing a great deal more about the system and disturbances to it than is possible. Other methods to anticipate, …

Ideas For Assessing The Sustainability Potential Of Human- Environmental Auxiliary Systems - The Case Of Municipal Solid Waste Landfills -, D. J. Lang, Claudia R. Binder, B. Stäubli, Roland W. Scholz

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Although sustainability is a widely accepted guiding idea for the development of our planet, only a few concepts exist on how to specify this idea in the context of human-environmental systems. We understand sustainability as a combination of system limit management with ethical allegiances. Uncertainties given by large timeframes and vague definitions present a major problem when assessing if an object or circumstance is sustainable or not. However, a sound standing assessment is indispensable if sustainability is to be more than a buzzword. In this paper, we present a systemic method for assessing the sustainability potential of anthropogenic systems. This …

Potential Impact Of Global Warming On Tropical Tuna Habitat, Harilaos Loukos, Patrick Monfray, Laurent Bopp Jul 2002

Potential Impact Of Global Warming On Tropical Tuna Habitat, Harilaos Loukos, Patrick Monfray, Laurent Bopp

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Recent studies suggest a reduction of primary production in the tropical oceans due to changes in oceanic circulation under global warming conditions caused by increasing atmospheric CO2 concentration. This might affect the productivity of higher trophic levels with potential consequences on marine resources such as tropical tuna. Here we combine the projections of up-to-date climate and ocean biogeochemical models with recent concepts of representation of fish habitat based on prey abundance and ambient temperature to gain some insight on the impact of climate change on skipjack tuna, the specie that dominates present day catches. For a 2xCO2 world, our results …

Fuzzy Prediction Of The Algal Blooms In The Orbetello Lagoon, Stefano Marsili-Libelli, G. Pacini, C. Barresi Jul 2002

Fuzzy Prediction Of The Algal Blooms In The Orbetello Lagoon, Stefano Marsili-Libelli, G. Pacini, C. Barresi

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

The Orbetello lagoon is a shallow brackish waterbody subject to intense and diverse eutrophication (phytoplancton, macroalgae and macrophytes). Periodically a large amount of algae must be artificially removed, their collection and disposal representing a considerable management cost. This paper describes the design of a bloom predictor based on the daily fluctuations of simple water quality parameters such ad dissolved oxygen, oxidation-reduction potential, pH and temperature. The task of the fuzzy predictor is to recognise the possibility that a bloom of the macroalgae population is about to occur based on the changing daily pattern of these variables. The fuzzy predictor is …

Biosecurity: Moving Toward A Comprehensive Approach, Laura A. Meyerson, Jamie K. Reaser Jul 2002

Biosecurity: Moving Toward A Comprehensive Approach, Laura A. Meyerson, Jamie K. Reaser

Natural Resources Science Faculty Publications

Biosecurity itself is more than a buzzword; it is the vital work of strategy, efforts, and planning to protect human, animal, and environmental health against biological threats. The primary goal of biosecurity is to protect against the risk posed by disease and organisms; the primary tools of biosecurity are exclusion, eradication, and control, supported by expert system management, practical protocols, and the rapid and efficient securing and sharing of vital information. Biosecurity is therefore the sum of risk management practices in defense against biological threats. (NASDA 2001, p. 1
