Little Qualitative Rna Misexpression In Sterile Male F1 Hybrids Of Drosophila Pseudoobscura And D. Persimilis, Jane Reiland, Mohamed A.F. Noor

Background: Although the genetics of hybrid sterility has been the subject of evolutionary studies for over sixty years, no one has shown the reason(s) why alleles that operate normally within species fail to function in another genetic background. Several lines of evidence suggest that failures in normal gene transcription contribute to hybrid dysfunctions, but genome-wide studies of gene expression in pure-species and hybrids have not been undertaken. Here, we study genome-wide patterns of expression in Drosophila pseudoobscura, D. persimilis, and their sterile F1 hybrid males using differential display. A Novel High-Cell-Density Protein Expression System Based On Ralstonia Eutropha, Sriram Srinivasan, Gavin C. Barnard, Tillman U. Gerngross

We describe the development of a novel protein expression system based on the industrial fermentation organism Ralstonia eutropha (formerly known as Alcaligenes eutrophus) NCIMB 40124. This new system over- comes some of the shortcomings of traditional Escherichia coli-based protein expression systems, particularly the propensity of such systems to form inclusion bodies during high-level expression. Using a proteomics approach, we identified promoters that can be induced by simple process parameters or medium compositions in high-density cell culture or shake flasks, respectively. Performance Analysis Of A Maximum-Likelihood Speckle Motion Estimator, Donald D. Duncan, Sean J. Kirkpatrick
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
Presented herein is a performance analysis of a maximum likelihood estimator for calculating small speckle motions. Such estimators are important in a variety of speckle techniques used in non-destructive evaluation. The analysis characterizes the performance (bias and RMS deviation) of the estimator as a function of the signal-to-noise ratio. This SNR parameter is a convenient surrogate for decorrelation of sequential speckle patterns such as are seen in biological tissues. Although the particular estimator is predicated on speckle motions that are a small fraction of a pixel, accurate performance is demonstrated for instantaneous motions of up to ±0.8 pixel/record. Dispersal is a phenomenon of central importance in ecology and evolution. Yet many of its fundamental aspects remain poorly understood or barely investigated. This excellent, broad-ranging volume is a collection of 26 short reviews derived from a Centre National de la Recherche (CNRS)-National Science Foundation (NSF) sponsored workshop held in 1999. As stated by the editors, this book is mainly comprised of “reviews and more theoretical approaches, with a limited number of empirical examples” (p. xx) on dispersal.
